Foods that will fade away with the Baby Boomer generation

I think you are right. I gag at the thought of eating frozen dinners. Logically I know that the good ones of today are nothing like those monstrosities from the 50s - yet I just cannot force myself to eat them.

I don’t fix instant potatoes - Not because of any lingering tastes from decades ago. But because I don’t find it that hard to make the real ones. I know that I am eating instant potatoes most of the time when I eat out.
Yea, but five minutes sitting in hot water trumps the heck out of peeling and cooking for 20 minutes. ::yes:: Being single I cannot use real ones fast enough before they sprout and/or rot. Instant last forever.:D[/QUOTE]
I only cook for two, but as I make virtually everything from scratch my potatoes don’t rot. That’s just me. I have NO Problem at all with what others choose to do. PLEASE don’t think I have some sanctimonious snark attitude that my way is better. I am retired so I have more time than money.

Your instant potatoes could easily be better than mine from scratch. My favorite way to cook potatoes is to roast them which is why I usually have raw potatoes on hand.

.

Even the so-called high end frozen dinners of today are mediocre at best.

If I don't feel like cooking, I'll make a sandwich or heat up a can of soup rather than eat a frozen dinner.

It has the same thing to do with what you wrote and quoted why I don't eat animals. I'm quite in tune to the world and circle of life though. I'm sure you know that methane emissions from cattle is a huge cause of climate change, even worse than the pollution of cars and airplanes.
That's why we eat them to get rid of the cow methane. You don't need to be defensive, just be realistic. You don't want to eat animals, that is entirely up to you, but, you don't need to convince me that the reasons you are using are real. You do it because you want too because you don't think it is right, and that is fine and the only excuse you need. I don't think that a cow fart is worse then man made pollution no matter how often it gets repeated. One jet takeoff would be more pollution then a cow would emit in an entire lifetime.

No that is not how it works with methane and cows but I realize I might as well bash my head against the wall conversing with you. I'm not trying to convince you at all not to eat animals. It's the other way around.

And they wouldn't think of breeding on their own right?

Well 1. They wouldn't even exist in their current form(S) without human intervention and
2. They wouldn't breed without human intervention at nearly the rate they breed with it.
3. There losses would be greater without human intervention, than they are with it. and
4. There wouldn't be nearly the numbers there are of them now if we didn't eat them because we wouldn't need them in such numbers.
So no. They wouldn't take over the world without us eating them.

I don't understand instant potatoes. Nasty. Real potatoes are cheap as dirt and takes no time to prepare. Two minutes to peel and stick on the stove. Few minutes in the microwave to bake.
The point is that they are not nasty anymore and they are real freeze dried potatoes. They are not fake and the way they are done now is quite good. All we do is re-hydrate them. From scratch potatoes have some qualities and more versatility. Baked, mashed, boiled, riced, scalloped, etc. but they are no longer "nasty".

We probably should end this conversation because you are doing exactly what you think I am doing to you. I don't care if you eat trees but, to be scolded because I think that there is such a thing as a natural food chain and therefore do not have a problem eating animals anymore then other animals have no problem with eating those on the lower side of their food chain. It is a personal choice and the reasons for and against are also personal and not necessarily fact. So let's agree to disagree and be on our happy dietary way.

My sister has been a hard core vegetarian for over 30 years. I have willingly made true vegetarian food for her with no hidden chicken stock or gelatin. I respect her choice not to eat meat products. TBH it’s not that hard.

But she also respects my choices. She does not condemn me or tell people that I am a disgusting %#% because I eat meat.

The problem that I see here unfortunately is that some not so nice people want to tear non vegetarians to sheds. Shame on them.

I have no data to support it but simply point to the problem of wild horses out west. Huge populations that keep expanding with no reasonable control available except for harvest.

Holy cow, this is so eerily spot on for describing my childhood meals. An inappropriately large serving of meat -- steak, chicken, or pork chop with a 2 out of 3 chance of it being coated in Shake n Bake -- some variety of potato, and a canned veg, either corn, peas, or green beans. Salad was plain iceberg drenched in Catalina dressing. Way too much syrup-soaked canned fruit in the house. White bread sandwiches with sodium-laden Carl Buddig "meat." Salt, pepper, and sugar were the only "seasonings" needed for any recipe. :crazy2:

I'm starting to think this is the recipe for making a vegan.

Hey now, don't be hating on Shake & Bake I love that stuff. I do add some garlic powder and a generous sprinkle of cayenne pepper but I love the taste lol. Shake & Bake pork chops with apple sauce, mashed potatoes, and brussells sprouts was my idea of heaven as a kid and is still pretty up there now!

I had to make a promise to my husband that I would never serve him instant mashed potatoes.

We used empty, used bread bags to take our lunch to school. So there. :snooty:
The same bags were also used to keep our feet semi dry inside our "winter boots".

OMG! So did we! Didn't need them for lunches tho. We lived close enough that we walked home for lunch. Yes, back in the day, you actually went home for lunch if you lived close to the school.

You don't need any data. At least not with me. I know It's a big problem. But it isn't a case of a natural animal over breeding. This is once again the doing of man. Horses, originally native to the Americas went extinct here over 11,000 years ago. iThey were reintroduced by man into an eco system that hadn't seen them in 11,000 years and is not yet adapted to them being here. So no matter how pretty some people think they are, they're technically a feral invasive species. And such a species does need to be managed. Unfortunately any time someone suggests rounding them up. there is fierce opposition. Similarly, Feral Hogs are a major issue in many states. But they're not pretty like horses. So there is no opposition to killing them. The horse problem is a classic case of artificial selection.

Who here has torn non vegetarians to shreds? I haven't seen it at all. I respect a person's choice to eat meat.

I agree.

I see the petitions and outrage on Facebook over the eating of dogs in Asian countries or hunting elephants or lions in Africa. Dogs are cute, elephants and lions are majestic. The same people have no problem eating farm factory tortured cows, pigs and chickens in their own countries. To be honest, until I stopped consuming animal products I had the same disconnect and outrage. Actually I still do have some disconnect since I continue to buy leather shoes and boots. I'm far from perfect and not sitting on a high horse, I assure. Two of my family members still eat meat and I respect their choice. They have to cook it themselves though. I won't touch it.

I love Shake and Bake on pork. Substitute LeSeour peas for the brussell sprouts and you just defined one of our favorite meals.

Kids here can go home for lunch (or out) in elementary and high school. Only 7th and 8th graders have a closed lunch.
