We haven't been to Disneyland yet (our first trip isn't until next June), however, I have been taking notes on the different snacks and food items that we have to try. Along with all of the great suggestions that have already been made, I am really looking forward to trying the chili/cheese cone from Cozy Cone Hotel in Carsland and my DD11 is very interested in the churro bites from there as well. I can't wait to try these snacks/foods too. Just reading this thread alone is making my mouth watering . Oh and FYI, make sure you check out that food porn thread on a full stomach rather than an empty one .

We have yet to try a Matterhorn Macaroon but will have to on our coming trip! Some of our favorites are:

Clam chowder in a bread bowl from any of the locations. The recipe seems to be the same. You can get it at DCA from Pacific Wharf Cafe, or at the French Market or Royal Street Veranda at DL.

Cheese enchilada plate at Rancho del Zocalo-definitely big enough to split

Fried green tomato sandwich at Hungry Bear in Critter Country

Banana Split from Carnation Cafe on Main Street (give this one two votes!!!)

Vegetarian Gumbo from Royal Street Veranda

Mint Julep-you have to try one of these from the Mint Julep window in New Orleans Square

Dole Whip (eaten inside the tiki room of course)
The cinnamon crisps from Rancho Del Zocalo

Don't get too excited to try the food at DL as you are likely to be disappointed. Other than Napa Rose I find most of the food at the park mediocre at best. There is a problem when they can't do better than a McDonalds. They are trying to upgrade the food but they have a long way to go.

Example here is the ingredients for the dole whips...

Water*, Sugar, Dextrose, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Coconut Oil**, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Xanthan Gum, Locust Bean, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Maltodextrin, Silicon Dioxide (Anticaking), Corn Syrup Solids, Citric Acid, Sodium Caseinate (A Milk Derivative), Artificial Flavor, Potassium & Sodium Phosphate, Mono & Diglycerides, Artificial Color (Yellow 5 & 6), Soy Lecithin.

Why can't they just make it out of milk, cream, sugar, pineapple juice???

We enjoy many of the items already listed in this thread but I want to give a shout out to the softserve vanilla ice cream at the Cozy Cone. Had it for the first time last week and it was heavenly - very rich vanilla flavor, ultra creamy, and you can get it dipped in chocolate. Maybe it was the heat last week but my family dug those softserves so much we went back twice.

I totally get what you are saying about the processed/fake nature of the food and ingredients...BUT, it's Disneyland. To me it is the one place and time on earth where I get to put on an "Ignorance is Bliss" attitude and not worry about all the dangers and chemicals and other sundry crap in the world and just be saturated in happiness.

So I'm starting to plan our restaurant choices and making notes.

Is Cafe Orleans or Blue Bayou still worth it if you don't like Monte Cristo sandwiches? If I want to do Fantasmic Sunday night, should I plan to eat dinner over in that area...Cafe Orleans or would Big Thunder BBQ be okay? Maybe that doesn't matter?

I have 3 days in the parks. I think it will mostly be counter service meals. I also think we'll just grab something quick in the hotel for breakfast. I think I have decided against a character meal this time.

Our last night is the Tuesday Halloween Party that we are skipping it and probably either eat dinner at California Adventure or Downtown Disney. Any thoughts?

Besides Rain Forest Cafe what is good in Downtown Disney that ages 5 and 9 will also like? Tortilla Factory?

Mmmm....yes. When I am in Disneyland I have to have a giant pickle (at least 1/day ).

We are also in love with the corn dogs that can be found in both DLand and Cal Adventure. They don't have the same things at WDW and it is quite depressing.

Try the Jazz Kitchen or Tortilla Joe's in DTD.

I would definatly plan on an early dinner Sunday night near the ROA. This way you are right where you need to be after dinner. By eating a little early, you will have plenty of time to line up for F!. People line up early- especially for the earlier show!

Cafe Orleans is a tough one. Personally, I think they need more options that appeal to a larger demographic. We are not Monte Cristo fans & DH doesn't eat chicken or fish...so what's left?? Exactly.

For this reason, it's on my list as a "sit down snack break". Think Pomme Frites, espresso & perhaps some Mickey shaped Beignets. Not every place has to be a meal. Think snack or dessert too! We try and eat breakfast before getting to the park or we pack in muffins. Then we eat lunch & dinner at off times in order to avoid the crowds. So then we get to plan some nice snacks in between our late lunches & dinners. Works great!

I haven't eaten here in a few years. It's actually on my list for our next visit! But I do remember the food portions being large & the food itself was good. Seems like they change their menu every so often & when I was a kid & ate here, it was NOT my favorite. Hopefully now they are more kid friendly!

When was that? We've always taken our Dole Whips inside, most recently in our early July trip. They don't allow food and drink in the Tiki Room in WDW, but they've always allowed it at DLR as long as I can remember.

While theres some great food there, I just wanted to report on the one thing I enjoyed yesterday at the parks. The seasonal cupcake at Jolly Holiday (and I also saw it at the Fidlers place in DCA) was amazing. One of the best cupcakes Ive had in a long time. It was a chocolate cake with rasberry mouse filling. I think it has a chocolate mouse frosting with a chocolate ganache layer on top. Then added with a fresh rasberry and chocolate shavings. It was so moist and outstandingly delicious that I miss it as I type.

Over the years I have enjoyed steakhouse 55 breakfast, jazz kitchen, the baked potatoes and corn in fantasyland, big bear jamboree lunches, award weiners, corn dogs, and much much more. Have a great trip!

You must be thinking of the WDW version of the tiki room. At DLR you have always been able to bring them in as far as I am aware.

On our trip to WDW last year we got to the tiki room and proceeded to look around us for the dole whip booth. My son was even wearing his dole whip/tiki room t-shirt. We clearly looked confused because a tiki room CM outside asked if we needed help. When I asked where the dole whips were because we wanted one before heading inside she goes "Oh, you must be from the West coast." and proceeds to tell us that we cannot eat inside their tiki room. She said that the WDW tiki room is sponsored by an orange company, not Dole, so they have the orange treat seller right next door instead. Quite despondent, we watched the tiki room show without our dole whips. It just was not the same.

Thank you. So what time should we plan dinner over there to make sure we plan for the early Fantasmic show? Any other places we should consider in that area? Maybe just skip Cafe Orleans? I will think about it for a snack or dessert place, but usually I don't think of a "sit down wait staff" place for like that.

I've been thinking about doing a late breakfast one day at the Carnation Cafe since it sounds like it's really good. But I'm on the fence because that can sometimes be the best times in the parks for rides and lines. With only 3 days and shorter hours for the off season, I'm unsure of my restaurant planning. I know we need breaks and food so hopefully I have enough information going in we can make a plan and then change on the fly if we need to.
