Before we left on our last trip Dec 2007 I read quite a few threads about packing food, for kiddos, and taking it on the plane. There were ideas of bagels and cream cheese (as long as the cream cheese was on the bagel not in a separate container) and turkey sandwiches to go along with the usual dry goods (cereal crackers). I didn't pack any of that stuff last time but boy I wish I had. Even with the time difference we still have 12 hours of travel/layover time. Now with charging for every snack and the expensive airport food I would like to pack my kids breakfast and lunch so we don't have to spend 75.00 at the airport for lunch, which is what I did last time. So my question for you are....can you still take dry and prepared food on the plane? and if so what do you bring. Don't worry peanutbutter and anything too smelly won't be on my list

Anything small and handy works great. Pack in individual ziploc bags so you can pass out easily.

Cut up veggies:
cucumber slices
baby carrots
cherry tomatoes
red pepper sticks

Protein:
almonds
cashews
string cheese
turkey slices rolled up

Treats:
rice krispie treats
M&Ms
raisins

Fruits:
bananas
apple slices
grapes

Also bring any pre packaged snacks that your family likes: fruit rollups, pretzels, etc.

I prefer not to eat a full meal and "grazing" through out the flights and layovers tend to entertain small children. If you have small kiddies bring along a sippy cup to avoid spills. Think of it as an adventure.

yep. you can still bring food, just not liquid (unless it meets the requirments for a baby). I take trail mix, snack packs, crackers, etc. I've never packed a "meal" b/c I am usually flying for work (and they pay me back). This disney trip though, our take off is just after lunch, so I plan on packing the kiddos a lunch they can eat in the terminal before we board after the sercurity check. Just gonna buy a bottle of water or two inside security.
I plan on making them some sammies and chips and fruit. Then some pre-packaged snacks for the flight just in case.

We've taken Lunchables several times, and they've never confiscated the juice boxes or pizza sauce.
I usually have one carry-on just for a snack bag, that lasts while we are on vacation as well.

We just flew in yesterday from Disney. On the way there (early) I packed breakfast burritos and let the kids pack fun snacks for when they get bored. (Hard candy, gummies, gum, trail mix,etc.)
On our return yesterday we got sandwiches from our food court with chips, grapes, and Mickey rice krispy treats. I saw lots of people get out food they had packed from home- even solo business travelers. The food that Frontier was selling actually looked good to eat, but with a family of five, I'd rather spend that money some place else.:thumbsup2

Thanks so much for the ideas...I never thought about all of the items listed but it is great. We are going to eat so much unhealthy stuff while at Disney that bringing fruit, veggies and string cheese are great ideas. Thanks again everyone!

I had cream cheese on an item and the TSA tossed it. They said no cream cheese or anything of that consistency is allowed. It's a national security thing...lol

You can bring cream cheese, PB etc. packets through security if they are less than 3 oz each and you put them in your quart size ziplock bag. Just like other liquids/gels.

Just don't bring a jar of peanut butter in your carryon. They will take it from you. I guess PB sandwiches are ok. Does anyone know? I would like to do that.

PB sandwiches are OK. :thumbsup2 As long as it's on a sandwich it works.

Glad to know TSA is keeping us safe. :rolleyes:

Most airlines are peanut-free in deference to those with peanut allergies. It would be considerate to avoid bringing peanut products onboard.

Just wanted to add:

If you have something you need to keep cold, use zip loc bags with ice in them. Toss them before you go through security, then get some ice at the food court or somewhere to fill new ones right after. I think they still don't allow ice packs, so this may work. Keep sandwiches cold!

That's a great idea!

We usually just pack things that don't spoil- like muffins or bagels, or freeze berries or grapes in a zip lock to keep things colder.

I think I may skip the cream cheese. We leave out of a pretty small airport and there is always this same security guard. Out of all the flights I have taken he is there 100% of the time. Last time I had everyone's liquids in the ziploc...everything was planned perfectly. He barked at us to put the plastic bags in the bin. I put everyones in the bin but mine. I didn't mean to forget but my DS was having trouble taking off his shoes and I just plain forgot. He got mad at me and told me that he has the right to throw away my entire ziploc bag because I didn't follow orders. He took 'mercy' on me and let me have my bag only after he opened every single item and inspected everything. He squirted every tube of evrything I had out to check it. He told be that was my only warning next time the bag gets tossed (as if he would remember me anyway) but he is always like this. He may confiscate grapes because of the juice.

Wow, it sounds as if he bordered on harassment.

Peanut Butter Sandwiches are not allowed through security per the TSA website:

"You may bring solid snack foods such as pretzels, potato chips or carrot sticks for the plane -- but you may want to hold the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Single-serving packages of condiments are permitted as long as they fit within your single zip-top bag, so you can add mustard to your ham sandwich after you get through security. All food must be securely wrapped or in a spill-proof container. You may not bring gel packs to refrigerate food (though they are permitted for medication)."

Not sure about what you can and can't bring through the checkpoint? Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home.

* Cranberry sauce
* Cologne
* Creamy dips and spreads
(cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
* Gift baskets with food items
(salsa, jams and salad dressings)
* Gravy
* Jams
* Jellies
* Lotions

* Maple syrup
* Oils and vinegars
* Perfume
* Salad dressing
* Salsa
* Sauces
* Snowglobes
* Soups
* Wine, liquor and beer

It says it's a quote, but I'm not sure where you got the first paragraph from the TSA website. If you go to TSA.gov and look under the 'For Travelers Section' and click on the 'traveling with food' link you will see this list, but the first paragraph is not there. You are allowed to take sandwiches through security with you. I asked DH, he works for TSA.

That's correct, you are allowed to take sandwiches through with you, but they cannot have peanut butter, or salad dressing, or anything like that on them. I was responding to the people who said that it is ok to take pre-made peanut butter sandwiches through security -- it is not ok. You must take peanut butter in a separate sealed container in your 3-1-1 bag, and make the sandwiches AFTER you go through security.

I do remember, on our return flight, we brought premade sanwiches from Norway on the plane. I loaded up on mayo and mustard packets and put them in my ziploc and had no troubles. I was just looking for ideas that would be easier than that. My DH suggested going to subway and getting some a turkey footlong...split in 3 ways...for my kids. The all like different things on it so it would be plain turkey and cheese with mustard and mayo packs in ziploc bags. Hopefully this won't be a problem.
