It sounds as if you've made what the best decision is for you in your circumstances. I'll admit my dh and I have considered selling for a moment here or there because of our other debts....but usually determine that our debt situation would be worse if we sold because we'd spend more on vacation accomodations without DVC and it we would be less happy without it as well (its a very high priority for us, since WDW is my dh's place to get away from it all and relax....) Luckily we aren't in debt from DVC at all...or it would be a much harder decision to keep it!
I can understand your preference for a monorail resort, as well. We definitely have enjoyed our stays on the monorail!
I'm sure your input will be quite valuable to those trying to make the decision about DVC....you make some very good points. You've definitely made me think hard about what kind of house I really want....so we get what we want the first time and it doesn't interfere with our later DVC needs! Yes, we own DVC and not our own home.....but that will be changing soon. At the time we joined DVC we didn't know where we wanted to live but knew what we wanted as far as our vacations. It has worked well for us....but everyone's situation is different!
Heather, I wish you the best of luck. DVC is not for everyone and really it is a luxury not a necessity. I honestly don't know what we would have done if both hubby and I were not huge Disney fans, we might not have bought into it at all. I am like you a HUGE Poly fan so I really really understand you!! We are in the very fortuante position to be able to stay at both DVC resorts and the Poly every year. If I had to give up the Poly and the other monorail resorts which my family loves, we probably would consider selling our DVC also. A woman who my husband works with sold her BWV points last year due to financial reason. Well, fate stepped in and they are now in a much better position and are thinking of buying into DVC again. This is what happens in life, sometimes you can, sometimes you can't, but you certainly don't want to put yourself into a position where your DVC points are so much a financial burden that you can't afford other things. I think you made the absolute right choice for you and you never have to apologize. This board can get a little "steepie" as my daughter would say. Everyone has their own opinion and their own reasons for doing what they do.
Best of Luck!! And maybe I'll see ya at the Poly sometime!!!
Heather - no flames because I think you need to do what is best for you and your family.
I think you point out what a lot of members and potention members ask and that is why people sell.
I would dare say that there is a percentage of DVC owners who really shouldn't be. By that I mean that they made an impulse purchase and now find that DVC isn't what they thought it would be. Either the SO's aren't into Disney as much, or the money they owe is now a problem, etc. etc. etc. I'm not saying this is what happened to you, but it does appear that DVC wasn't everything to you with liking monorail hotels and having a DH who isn't in to Disney. If your comments help even one person from buying DVC who maybe souldn't then you have done them and yourself a favor.
DH and I bought into DVC because we both love Disney, have a home that was paid for (and while we would love a bigger house don't want to go back into debt for it), and knew that it could be something we can share with our family.
