Food/Drink ideas from Kentucky **Updated with pics of final project!**

I would suggest Gold Star Chilli. It is served as chilli spaghetti or on cheese coneys. Also in the Northern Ky area or Skyline Chilli and Dixie Chilli. It would be reasonably inexpensive to serve to such a large group.

Isn't Gold Star more of a Cincinnati thing?

Here's the winner... Moonlite BBQ from Owensboro, and you can order it online. That would be a huge hit!

ahhh Moonlite, now I'm craving their cornbread!

and Burgoo(but I like St.Mary Magdalene's from their annual picnic better)

Moonlit barbecue Yum!

Awesome idea on cutting down the KFC chicken strips. Since it is in the morning, you could even cut biscuits into fourths and make chicken biscuits. You will be the hit of the festival! :cool1:

Can't wait to see your table!!!!

Dippin Dots, they were invented in Ky., just thought about that and kids would love it.

Nestle has a plant in Mt Sterling also. The candy would be cheap.
I had no idea Airheads were made here.

I think they make Hot Pockets at the Mt Sterling plant. I have a cousin that works there and I'm pretty sure that's what he told me.

To OP,

Whatever you decide to do, please make it easy on yourself. 350 servings is a lot. I'm not from Kentucky, but here are a few suggestions:

Benedictine Dip--Originated at Benedict's, a Louisville restaurant. It is cucumber and cream cheese dip or sandwich spread tinted green.

Blackberry--The Official State Fruit of Kentucky since July 2004.

Milk--The Official State Drink of Kentucky since June 2005.

I was going to suggest Benedictine quarter sandwiches. I think it would be easiest and cheapest, though beans and cornbread would work, too. Or, sausage gravy and biscuits.

Yes, you must incorporate blue and white or basketball. It's extremely important here!

I live in Louisville and if I were doing this, I'd order Papa John's pizza and cut it in little bites. That is SUPER easy!

OP here,
I'm so disappointed... I called KFC and just told them what I needed and she laughed!! She said all I could do was order from the regular menu which was 12 tenders for $15! The popcorn chicken was $5 for a large, single serving. I thought about just buying bags of popcorn chicken at Sams and mixing them in with some of the KFC, but I'm not sure of the ethics of that, LOL!

Dippin Dots would have been awesome, but our stores closed down here. I don't think I have time to order anything else and I can't find Ale 8 around here (I know, waiting until the last minute.) All of the hot foods sound wonderful, but I'm not sure the kids would go for that kind of stuff? So I'm back to the chicken or the derby-like pie. I can't wait until this project is over!

Hate that over KFC! Check if you can get dippin dots at Walmart. It is not dippin dots but taste the same. Out of the package kids will never know the difference.

country ham biscuits are one of the foods served at the govenors mansion on derby day. i believe wal mart has some tea biscuits in the frozen dept. makes a very nice looking display and you could cut them pretty small. good luck. and sweet tea is a very popular southern drink. oh i forgot to add that you can get the ham in the deli, so no cooking, and a couple of pounds can go a long way.

In Eastern Ky. we have Shuck beans. It is a type of green bean that is dried in the sun on stings, with the hull on and then kept frozen till needed. When cooked they are very soupy ( like a pinto kind of ). You can not buy the seeds for the original anymore, they have to be handed down within families. Just had a mess Christmas, YUM.

I have purchased beans from Bill Best in Berea (He used to be a prof at Berea College and is known at the Lexington Farmer's market for his tomatoes)-he has a catalog of beans that he has collected over the years. The catalog is fun read! We had to get the preacher beans! Here's the link

I live within 10 miles of the orginal KFC they are owned by Yum Brands in Louisville KY you may call corp office and see if they could offer you coupons. The moonbow has not been mentioned, Cumberland Falls has the only moonbow in the world, when there is a full moon and the moon light hits the fall it creates a "moonbow". It is beautiful! There use to be one in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe but I think it fell. That would help create an awesome display! Good luck Can't wait to see the pictures! Don't forget the KY Derby hats!!

Oooohhh! There's a farmers market in Lexington? What can you tell me about it? Where are they located? Are they open year round? What days are they open? What vendors do you like best? Any info you can give, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

OP here: Thanks for these suggestions... I am taking notes, we're going to have to put KY on our vacation list very soon. Would have loved to incorporate this idea in the project, but waited too late to post this thread!

Well.... the fair was today and it was a HUGE success! The boys learned so much about KY and were able to share with the over 300 people who came by to view their table! We incorporated so many of the ideas everyone posted, I just cannot thank you enough!!! As soon as I figure out how to post pics, I'll get them up, hopefully tonight or tomorrow. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Ok, here are the boys in their costumes, Abe Lincoln and my DS, Colonel Sanders! He is so shy, and he was embarassed about the costume, but all of the teachers, parents, and kids kept telling him it was the best there, so he got over that quickly! You can see an overview of the table behind them.

WOW! That's impressive! They better have gotten an 'A' on this. Looks like you had to spend some money (costumes, memorabilia, etc). Great job!
