Food/Drink ideas from Kentucky **Updated with pics of final project!**

I love right across the river from Louisville. Papa John's pizza was also founded in Louisville...... well actually across the river in Jeffersonville, but the headquarters is now in Louisville, and that is where the founder now lives too.

How are you decorating the table? You could get a few red roses and sprinkle the petals on it to represent to the garland of roses that the Kentucky Derby winner wears in the winner's circle.

How about hay? It would be cheap and it would be what they feed the horses! lol

Actually Kentucky Hot Brown came to mind, ALE8 is a good idea also.
Burgoo (like a stew) should be easy to make.
High Bridge Spring Water is from Kentucky.
Beer Cheese (goes on crackers)

It's delicious! 2 litres and dixie cups and you should be able to do it for under $50! Hope this helps.
Yuck! I can't stand the stuff. I'm definitely in the minority though. When my Uncle visits from North Carolina he buys cases of the stuff to take home.

What about mini hot browns? Get the little condiment cups and cook a large turkey or two. Add a small piece of bread in the bottom of the cup, a small piece of turkey, some bacon bits and cheese sauce and you have a KY favorite =)

Edited to add...Another favorite would be KY burgoo. Can be made with assorted ingredients!

I was going to suggest KY hot browns as well. I've never heard of burgoo. I'll have to google that.

My suggestion would be soup beans with a slice of onion and cornbread. You can find this at every restaurant in this area as well as at every festival. There are many variations of soup beans. I'll have to ask my mom for her recipe. But it's basically pinto beans, salt pork, onions and water. And of course it's not a complete meal without a slice of raw onion and piece of cornbread. You could definitely feed an army on this and not spend a lot of money.

Moonshine... wait a minute, that might get him kicked out of school.

BBQ is popular in KY, catfish.

Looks like after the years of living there, I would know more about this topic. :confused3

We also enjoy some moonshine cake during the holidays, actually put the left over's in the freezer. That is some good stuff.

You've been given quite a few ideas and I would definitely contact KFC.

Also for a give out, you can buy a big bag of KY Bluegrass seed and put it in little baggies. KY is the Bluegrass state!

Maker's Mark also has coffee...not just bourbon. ;)

Oh and everything needs to be in blue and white for the UK Wildcats.:rotfl:

Sweet tea or sun tea? That would be simple and budget friendly. No allergy/food safety issues and probably a big hit if everyone else is doing food. KFC chicken strips cut into bite size pieces and served on toothpicks? That would be more expensive though, and you'd have to keep them warm if they were going to be out for long.

Derby Pie (or Chocolate Nut Pie) is good - Kern's Kitchen is famous for that

Also Girl Scout Cookies used to be made in KY. I remember years ago going to see them being made when I was a GS.

For Drink - Mint Julep. I'm sure there is a no alcohol version out there.

:rotfl: This made me laugh out loud, thanks!

I am kicking myself for not posting this question sooner. I have already bought a ton of ingredients for the pies but so much of these ideas are better and easier! I may just have to cut my losses and go with something else. The other mom is doing bourbon balls (for the teachers only)... she liked the sample I brought her from my version of the pie, but it's definitely not gooey like you guys are describing. Soooo, I am either going to try the version maddiesmom0116 posted, or I'll go with one of the drinks. It's at 10 in the morning and lasts a couple of hours, so I'm concerned about cold food. The hot browns sound awesome, I'm going to try that at home for dinner one night soon.

The display table is going to look great, I think. We knew someone from KY (who knew nothing about food unfortunately!) and raided their house, so we have posters, lots of sports and UK memorabilia, blue table cloth, some pottery made there, all sorts of stuff... and we'll have some bluegrass music playing. The Churchill Downs model came out great, my son did some of it with Legos, it's really cute. I'll post a pic thursday night after it's all set up.

After we get thru this nightmare with the food, we may have to start planning a vacation there, now that my son is an expert on it and it sounds like there's so much good stuff to eat there! Thanks again for all the ideas, I'll update at the end of the week with how it all turned out!

In Eastern Ky. we have Shuck beans. It is a type of green bean that is dried in the sun on stings, with the hull on and then kept frozen till needed. When cooked they are very soupy ( like a pinto kind of ). You can not buy the seeds for the original anymore, they have to be handed down within families. Just had a mess Christmas, YUM.

I just re-read this, that is so cool! They just aren't for sale anymore? That really is neat that they have to be handed down.

Another Kentuckian here....

Ale-8 came to my mind first. I live in Northern KY...Trauth dairy is located in Covington-so that includes ice cream and milk. Also Dixie Chili is located in NKY....Dixie chili typically used to make chili spaghetti or as NKY/Cincinnatians call it 3-ways or coneys (hot dogs with chili and cheese).

Lots of good food in our state! :)

Here's the winner... Moonlite BBQ from Owensboro, and you can order it online. That would be a huge hit!

Bourbon Ball from Rebecca Ruth candies or pulled cream candy from Ruth Hunt. They both have websites, I'm pretty sure.

Ale8 is Winchester creek water. I just can't do it.

Ale8 is definitely an acquired taste. Over here in central KY, it's Ski that everybody drinks.

Ale-8 would be my recommendation as well if you can get it delivered. Cooking ANY type of food for that many people would be a huge challenge. Though if you do want something cheap, I second the soup beans and cornbread. You don't get any more "Kentucky" than that. As for the mint julep recipe from Disneyland, you folks do know that Disneyland is not in Kentucky, don'tcha?:rotfl2: And, for the record, there is no non-alcoholic real mint julep, since basically all it is is bourbon with some sugar and a few sprigs of mint.

I would suggest Gold Star Chilli. It is served as chilli spaghetti or on cheese coneys. Also in the Northern Ky area or Skyline Chilli and Dixie Chilli. It would be reasonably inexpensive to serve to such a large group.

Here's an idea - since 99% of Americans associate KFC with the state, why not buy some of their chicken strips and cut them down to bite-size pieces?
