So I have never been to the food and wine festival.. and I will be there in the beginning of sept just when it starts.. any help, suggestions on what to try would be great, and also .. I heard about purchasing a gift card at epcot to make it easier to pay for your purchases?

Don't be shy and try everything. Portions and prices are small, so no need to worry if you don't like it.
Keep your expectations low on the alcoholic drinks. I am not sure there was alcohol in any of the cocktails served at the kiosks.

Magic Band is the easiest form of payment. No dogging in your pocket.

prices are small,

sorry, I do not agree with this. Prices are NOT small in anyway. You are basically trying tappas size portions at at least $8-$10 each. You can preload a gift card to make it easy/budgetable if you like. They sell little ones on a stretchy wrist band just for the event.
If you can go during the week. The weekends can be a mad house.
If you want to see the musical act, plan a head as the lines can get really long.
Don't forget to drink water. It is still brutally hot this time of year and alcohol can make it worse.
Book any special events as early as you can. they sell out fast.

enjoy

There will be bloggers that go the first week and review the different food and drink options. You might try Steve Milz or Josh Humphries (easywdw.com). They have done reviews previously. The issue may be that if you are there very early, the reviews may not be published yet.

The Disney Food Blog sells a preview. I have never bought it.

Yeah I wouldn't call the prices "small". Some are very reasonable for what you get, but others seem a bit high.

The wrist band gift card is our payment method of choice for several reasons.

If your on a dining plan save your snack credits for food and wine.
We usually use the snack credit for the expensive items ( like the lobster roll which can be about $8) and budget the rest

Good to know.. I had no idea that you could use your snack credits.. thanks for the tip!

Avoid FWF Friday-Sunday. Also, we found the earlier in the day, the better. By the time 5pm rolls around some guests start their "drinking around the world." Believe me, we love to dry many drinks/foods, but we pace ourselves. Our kids saw many out of control adults at FWF last year around the time we were heading out of the park (maybe 6/7pm or so).

When the list of kiosks becomes available, look at the menu items. Decide which countries and items you would like to try. It's fun to pick up a Food And Wine Passport and get it stamped at the places that you dine. Look up some of the prior year's items at the Disney Food Blog. Here is a link http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2015-epcot-food-and-wine-festival/. The weekends are definitely busier with more locals. Enjoy! It's a great experience. We are returning in September and can't wait. As mentioned above, if you are on the Disney Dining Plan, use your "snack credits" for your food at the festival. I always pick up one of the cookbooks to replicate some of the favorites at home. Have fun!

Definitely choose the things you want to try ahead of time. We started at Canada and ate half way around the World for lunch, and then for supper we started where we left off and made our way to Mexico. We ended the evening getting a table in Mexico on the water and watched Illuminations from there enjoying margaritas. It was a great day!

I think having an idea of what you want ahead of time makes things go more smoothly. If I hadn't had my list ahead of time, I feel like I would have gotten majorly distracted with all the choices and the crowd!

I've been for the last two years and will be there the first week it opens this year as well. I go specifically for the event so every single one of my afternoon/evenings are spent in Epcot. I go solo and try to get something from every booth, I accomplished that last year but had to cheat at a few and just get a drink. It took my 4 days/nights to make my way around all the booths. I don't do many table service meals while I'm there, most of my meals except breakfast are eaten at the booths, I might have done a QS somewhere last year, I really don't remember and I did do the afternoon tea at GF and had dinner at HBD one night. Only because those are two must do's for me any time I go and at HBD I got a cheese plate and an appetizer portion of the Cobb Salad so even that wasn't a full meal. The have special food and wine pairing meals at different restaurants in the some of the countries throughout the festival, they can range from around $70 to around $100 per person, according to the time of day and the location. I had an excellent sort of late lunch one at Spice Roads last year, I think it was a 4 course meal with a different wine paired with each course. They also have meals at some of the resorts and Disney Springs with celeb. chefs. They have little seminars (dubbed deminars here on the boards) at the festival center just about every day (may be every day) usually at least two each of cooking demos given by on site chefs with samples of what the chef prepared paired with either a red or white festival wine and then at least two wine tasting seminars, you usually taste about 3 wines. I think these were about $15 each last year, I got an AP discount for the ones during the week so I don't really remember. I booked all but one of the ones I went to in advance but none were totally fully and could easily have been booked that morning. The menus are posted at the venue a couple of hours before the deminar. Otherwise all you know is who the chef is and what the protein is, i.e. beef, chicken, lobster, etc. You don't know what the dish is unless you happen to be at the center when the board goes up. I've always been able to find seating at the concerts without doing any of the dinner packages, all those do is get you seating up front, since it is an open air theater you can even stand at the back and watch. I do buy the wrist band type gift cards, just makes it easier to me to hold up my wrist and let them scan the card and it makes it easier to budget. I don't charge to my MB, I've found that hit and miss just about every time I'm at WDW, sometimes the readers work, sometimes not. I don't really ever have a plan, I just start at the closes booth from where I happen to be, buy what I'm interested in and walk around noshing on it, then when I'm finished, I go to the next booth I land at. Keep in mind, this meant I walked around the entire WS at least 3 times each day, but hey, it was good exercise and burned off some of the wine. I was there on a Friday night, the first weekend it opened last year and did not find it too crowded, I left around 8:30 on Friday night because I was full and tired. I left for home on Saturday but was finishing up my eat at every booth quest that afternoon before I left and was there until at least 2 and again, didn't find it too crowded to bear. Could have gotten worse as the night progressed but I had to drive home.

Thank you so much for the info..

We ended the evening getting a table in Mexico on the water and watched Illuminations from there enjoying margaritas.

Do you remember which restaurant this was? DH and I are only doing EP one day and this will be the last day of our anniversary trip. This sounds like a lovely last meal location and I'd like to make ADR if possible!

No reservations needed! It is the QS restaurant in Mexico, La Cantina de San Angel. The night we were there, we got there about 30 minutes before Illuminations started and a table opened up. I suggest you get there early and enjoy a snack and drink during the show!

We always like to get a snack or drink in Mexico because on our honeymoon we went to Cancun!

I think it would be the perfect way to end your anniversary trip!

We obviously didn't try the same cocktails. There were a few where I found the taste of alcohol was so strong thwt I could barely finish the drink (Mexico and Domincan Republic for example).

I thought I'd just throw my question in here, rather than start another thread.
It's our first time at F&W as well but the only day we can really do, is the first Sunday of the festival. I've heard horrendous things about F&W on weekends, an its starting to put me off. Is it still worth going?
