This trip to the world it will be me, DH, DS4, DS16 and his friend. I am sure the teens will be going off by themselves at the parks. I need to come up with a food allowance for my DS16. At Breakfast we will be together at the hotel, so he will need enough for lunch, dinner and snacks. I was thinking about $35/day. If he is off on his own they will be just doing counter service. Any table service meals we will be together for. I want to make sure he has enough but not too much that he will overspend needlessly. He is a pretty big eater as most 16 year old boys are. Any opinions?

I looked over my receipts from our trip last Christmas. My DSs 17 & 19 spent about $30-40 a person when on their own for lunch and dinner. That included drinks as they won't carry water bottles. I think $35 a day is probably about right.

This sounds like a good opportunity to use the Q&C vouchers. They probably wouldn't do sit down meals, anyway. The voucher would provide plenty of food for the boy.

If giving them cash, I would probably go $25. On school trips to other places, I usually allocate $5 for fast-food lunch and $10 for dinner. If they come up a little short, they pay the extra from their own funds. I don't think it hurts them to check prices a bit.

I second the Q&C vouchers. It's a prepaid "certificate" for one entree, a side, drink and dessert at most counter service restaurants throught the parks and resorts. That way, you don't need to give him cash that he might spend on something else and skip meals.

We recently used them and they worked great!

You can not buy a fast food lunch for $5 at WDW. I generally don't give my teen son a preset limit, I let him charge to his room key, and he's required to bring me the receipts. I haven't had a problem yet with him spending too much. He isn't really a snacker, and I think that makes a big difference. :)

Also, he isn't allowed to charge souveniers or complete junkfood snacks (ie candy!) to his room charge. He has his own money that he has to use for that type of purchase, without prior permission.

You might want to check out the menus and prices (link below). I think the Q&C vouchers would be perfect for a teen. Don't forget to allow enough for lots of drinks, unless he will carry a water bottle.

I saw tons of teens using the vouchers last week.

The AK meal vouchers are great also. I think they were $11.99 for adults. I wish they'd offer these in all the parks.
