Food allergies -- notify when making ADRs?

I have some food allergies (almonds and coconut) and now that I have made my ADRs over 3 months ago I'm wondering if I should have noted my food allergies when I made my ADRs vs. waiting until we get to Disney. (I saw the thread about the pineapple bread and thought "OH NO!" due to the coconut!)

Should I call Disney Dining and have my food allergies noted?

As long as you tell the restaurant when you check in, you will be fine. Just make sure that you do speak to a Chef about your allergies! Just last week, we had a guest who had to be transported to the hospital because he never told anyone he had a treenut allergy. Well, he ate a roll from the bread basket that is toppped with hazelnuts. If we don't know about the allergy, we can't help you! Sometimes the ingredient is very easy to see, but not always. Example: our coleslaw contains coconut milk and if you didn't ask, you wouldn't know until it's too late. :confused3

I am also allergic to those (and many other things). I strongly advice you to avoid Boma, I think just about everything thre has nuts or coconut in it.

It was a very disappointing experience.

My DS has a severe tree nut allergy. It is noted on all my ADR's. I was advised by the CM that when I get to the restaurant, mention it again. I like that it is on my ADR's so that it gives them a "heads-up." I heard that Disney is a wonderfully accomodating place for allergies. I would call dining and have the allergies noted on your ADR's as well as mention it when you get to the restaurant.

My DD has nut allergy and she is a vegetarian. When we were there in Nov she did fine with meals - the Chef's all were very accomodating everyplace but Crystal Palace - although we will go back there in April. When we were making our ADR's for our April trip I had the allergy noted on the ADR - the CM taking our ADR also gave the the phone numbers to each of the rest. we will be eating at so that I can call them earlier in the day to remind them. Her allergy is pretty bad in that she even will react if the knife or surface has had nuts on them... One thing though the CM said she could only note either allergy or vegetarian on the ADR not both - maybe that is why she gave me the phone numbers to call.

You could probably be accomodated without having it noted but I would recommend that you call back and have it noted on all of your ADR's. I think it helps to give the chefs a "heads-up". It might also help to look over the menus for the restaurants where you're eating and if you see something you're interested in trying you could contact the restaurant beforehand and ask if they can prepare it so that it would be safe for you to eat (like leaving out almonds for example).

I wanted to add that while the previous poster had problems with Crystal Palace that was one of our best experiences with my son who is highly allergic to peanut/tree nut and is also a type 1 diabetic. I think you will find that your experience is greatly dependent on the chef you get to help you out! There are some good threads on the disAbilities board about food allergies and dining at WDW.

My son also has a nut allergy. I emailed Disney thru their websit and asked this question. Their response was fantastic. They said to tell them when you make your ADR's and she also gave me the phone numbers for all of the head chefs in each park. She also suggested calling the restaurant the day you plan to eat to remind them. She also said if the meal is buffet syle, the chef will give you a personal tour explaining food prep. and ing. She said they also can prepare something special if needed. Try emailing them for the phone numbers.

I have a shellfish allergy and so far they have been great about helping me out. We have not been to the park yet, so I do not know how it will be in the end. Since I am allergic to shellfish the CM asked if I eat fish or anything like that. I said no because it is to risky incase they touched in anyway. She said I understand and put Shellfish and Seafood Allergy on my ADR's. She insisted that she wrote both down. She told me that this way they would know to be extra extra careful.

I work for disney and yes, call the dining line and TELL THEM ABOUT IT!

I would call and tell them to note it on your ADR. I told them when i made my first adr's and have since changed them on three occassions and they all said thy saw the allergy notation and put it on my new adrs along with giving me numbers to call in case i had further questions....better safe than sorry

Thank you all! I called Disney Dining and the wonderful CM made notations on all (and there are MANY!) ADRs and she gave me phone numbers for all the restaurants as well.

Thank you so much for your help!

My DD is the one that had the problem at CP - but at ALL the other places we ate while there in Nov and at all our previous trips we had NO problems - everyone has always been very accomodating!!!! Maybe we just caught them on an off night at the CP - not to worry though - we are going back in April and CP is on our list...as well as Boma - that makes me a little nervous based on some of the previous posts....
