Counting the days till we see the lights on December 2nd. We're not doing the party but hoping the crowds will lessen during Fantamic and go then! Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm impressed that you started your dining report while you were still at Disney. I can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip, the part that happened after we had breakfast at Captain's Grill. :)

From the Farm Fresh booth (bottom left): Loaded Mac 'n' Cheese with Nueske's Pepper Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Peppers and Green Onions (My Favorite of the Day)
I'm glad that you tried this and enjoyed it. We thought the loaded mac 'n' cheese was pretty good.

From Hawaii (top left) Kalua Pork Slider with Sweet and Sour Dole Pineapple Chutney and Spicy Mayonnaise (my husband really liked this)
I really liked these sliders last year. i even went back another day for them. But this year they didn't seem as good. Maybe they put less meat on the bun.

From Ireland (top right) - Warm Chocolate Pudding with Kerrygold Irish Cream Liqueur Custard (one of our favorites)
DH had this dessert while I had the lobster and seafood fisherman's pie.

And we also received a pair of 3D glasses to view the lights.
Did the lights turn into little angels? Back when the lights first went up they would pass out paper 3D glasses which made the lights look like little angels. I found a pair when I was cleaning out drawers in the bedroom. Those glasses made the lights fun to view.

Oh my gosh, YES!! I wish you would have said hello. :goodvibes But how about the FP line that night? I thought I was going to reach Mexico before I found the end of that line.[/QUOTE]

I knew it!! I should have said hello but was nervous that it wasn't you, lol!! I think you were behind us in line! The line was out of control. I couldn't believe it was that long!! Love your Merry and Bright party review. We went on Sat, 11/7 and the lights were so crowded. It was great to have a place to sit down and enjoy the lights!

I am so on the fence about doing the dessert party. I really don't eat a ton of desserts but the idea of a nice table to relax at does sound appealing.

I say you should go for it, especially since your next trip is solo. Paying $69 for this is much more tolerable than $69 x 2, 3, 4...etc. If my family had been along I would have definitely felt gypped on this one. ;)

So glad to read your report on the Dessert Party. We have been contemplating it. While we are not big dessert eaters either, that apple pie looks amazing. So I will talk to DH about it and we will probably pass, but it is a nice idea though. Just really bummed that this will be the last year for the lights. That is why we are going. December 10th. Can't wait!

Glad to hear you will get to see the lights one last time. I really hope though that they find a new home for them somewhere. :worried:

Hopefully someday they come back in some form.

I really hope so too. ::yes::

So sorry you brought back sickness with you from your trip! I always say the combo of lack of sleep and being around so many people is a recipe for disaster!

Very true, and the longer you are there the likelihood of catching something has got to be pretty high. My luck (or resistance) finally ran out on the 14th of 15 nights. :worried:

I was at WDW roughly during the same time frame as you were and also was at the official opening night of the Lights. I left DHS for dinner at Cape May and then re-entered the park around 7pm. I agree, it was packed. I had no idea about the soft opening earlier in the week and could have kicked myself when I found out from others that Fri night. However, so worth going back through security/bag check to see the Lights one last time. I left by 7:30pm as it was my last night and I had to pack for an early flight home the next morning. Like you, I also picked up a nasty cold but fortunately it didn't hit until I was on the plane home. It will be fun comparing notes. It looks like I ate at a number of different restaurants but always wonderful to see something different as it encourages me to try something new for my next vacation!

I went to Cape May two nights before (on the 4th) so we just missed each other there. It was my first time having dinner at Cape May, so it will be interesting to compare notes. In regard to my restaurant choices, I really wanted to try some new places or places that I haven't been to in many years. So this ended up being a different trip for me "dining-wise". ;)

Wow - your reports, details and pictures are truly one of the best I've found - including guidebooks! Thanks so much for all the great info!!!

Aww...thank you so much for the kind words! :goodvibes I'm so glad you are finding my reviews helpful.

Thanks for the review, I have never been to one of the dessert parties around the world. I was able to see the Osborne lights last November so very glad I saw them then, love your pictures, makes me get in the Christmas mood.

Thanks for reading! Glad I was able to pass on some holiday cheer! :santa:

Welcome back, hope you're feeling better.

I'm not all that familiar with the holiday event as we've never visited during November or December. Does the part just give you access to a private area to view the lights? Does anything else happen while you are there, besides food of course?

Thanks Kari! The reserved area for the party guests was at the end of the street where the Osborne Lights are displayed. While this view of the lights is good (especially since you can sit and enjoy them along with some treats and your beverage of choice), the best way to experience the lights is to stand right in the middle so that you are surrounded by them. I think this brings the experience to a whole other level of awesome!! :cloud9:

Thank you for this wonderfully comprehensive and helpful review! I was leaning towards cancelling our booking for this, but now I am on the fence again. If only for the eclairs lol.

Ahhh, the eclairs. I think I would have liked them better without the icing on them but then they wouldn't have looked nearly as cute.

Counting the days till we see the lights on December 2nd. We're not doing the party but hoping the crowds will lessen during Fantamic and go then! Glad you enjoyed it.

Yes, you probably have the right idea going on a week night and during Fantasmic! :thumbsup2

I really liked these sliders last year. i even went back another day for them. But this year they didn't seem as good. Maybe they put less meat on the bun.

DH had this dessert while I had the lobster and seafood fisherman's pie.

Did the lights turn into little angels? Back when the lights first went up they would pass out paper 3D glasses which made the lights look like little angels. I found a pair when I was cleaning out drawers in the bedroom. Those glasses made the lights fun to view.

Hi Sue! :wave2: You know I thought the same thing about the slider, thought it was better last year. My DH really liked it but he didn't have it last year so had nothing to compare it too. As for the fisherman's pie, I had that too but not until sometime the next week. I love both of these options from the Ireland booth. I'm glad they continue to have them year after year. :thumbsup2

I won't give the surprise away for those that might be going to the party, but I will say that it is something other than angels that you see when wearing the 3D glasses. ;)

Oh, now you have me racking my brain trying to remember who was standing in front of me in the FP line for Illuminations!! Unfortunately I stood in way too many lines during my two weeks there, plus my memory isn't all that great to begin with. That's why I have to take lots of notes and pictures in order to do these dining reports. ;)

Anyway, how did your party experience compare to mine? Did they let people in very early again? Were the food and beverage options the same? How about the seating?

One more review I want to do because of the time factor and then I'll rewind my dining report back to the beginning of my trip. On Monday, Nov. 2 I had a pre-park opening reservation to try a new breakfast experience which is being tested at Hollywood Studios'...

Here is the description from the official Disney World website:

Breakfast Is Coming! Breakfast Is Coming!
Attention, Earthlings… From November 1, 2015 to January 23, 2016, your favorite 1950’s drive-in diner, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant, will offer a never-before-seen dining that Earth scientists are now calling “Breakfast.”

Do not be alarmed. This is only a test. During this period, participating humans will be able to travel back in time to experience the “glory days” of their favorite 1950’s drive-in theater diner—in the early hours of your solar day, also known as “Morning.” Visiting humans should be prepared to encounter an “out of this world” menu of “breakfast” items, including (to name just a few):
  • Puff Pastry filled with Scrambled Eggs, Crab, Asparagus and Gruyère Cheese with Roasted Tomatoes
  • Grilled Beef Tenderloin on Baby Spinach, with Bacon and Cheddar Custard on a Roasted Tomato and Cheesy Horseradish potatoes
  • Scrambled Eggs, Crispy Bacon, Sausage Links and Breakfast Potatoes
  • Macadamia Crusted Brioche French Toast with Mascarpone and Fresh Berries
This limited-time experience is in addition to the regular lunch and dinner offerings. Thank you for your cooperation, Earthlings, and bon voyage!

I walked from the Boardwalk to Hollywood Studios and arrived sometime between 7:15 and 7:30. On the left side of the park entrance area there were CMs checking lists which contained the names of those who had dining reservations at Hollywood & Vine and those like me who were headed to the new breakfast at Sci-Fi. The Hollywood & Vine list looked like it was much longer. Once I'd been checked I was allowed to get in line at the turnstiles (are they still called turnstiles now that they don't actually have a turnstile?? :scratchin). I believe we were allowed into the park at around 7:40 because at 7:45 I took this photo...

I figured this was the Hollywood Studios equivalent of taking a photo of Cinderella's Castle without any people in the picture at Magic Kingdom. ;)

Then it was on to my breakfast at the...

After checking in at the desk for my 8:15 reservation, it wasn't long before my name was called. By 7:58 I was seated as a "hitchhiker" in the back seat of a front row car with three other diners who were together. Two ladies were seated in the front and a gentlemen in the middle seat. I noticed that most of the cars were empty around us...

Here is a photo of the menu we were given...

NOTE: All of the Adult choices were a set price of $23.99 (plus tax and gratuity), which is $2.00 more than the similar breakfast that is held at Be our Guest. They did though allow me to use my Tables in Wonderland membership card for a 20% discount.

So anyway, I gave our friendly server my choices and then looked around to see that the place was still mostly empty. I got out of my car briefly to go to the back of the room to obtain photographic evidence of just how empty this place was...

I haven't been to the Sci-Fi for more than 5 years but I distinctly remember it being a very busy place, so seeing it this way was kind of eerie, yet cool. ;) When I returned to the back seat of my car, the thought did run through my mind though as to why I had been seated in the backseat of a car with another party of 3 when they had a room full of empty cars?? I guess they thought it unsafe for me to be driving alone in the dark.

And now it's...

Ok, no tasty candy was served at 8:00 in the morning, but I did have a a cool, refreshing drink in the form of a glass of orange juice and a cup of hot (but not particularly good) coffee. These were served along with the plate of assorted breakfast pastries and my appetizer choice...

On my pastry plate were two croissants, two mini double chocolate muffins, and an orange glazed cinnamon bun...

I had one of the croissants during my breakfast and it was good. I asked for a box at the end of my meal to take the rest with me, as I planned to return to my room after breakfast. I enjoyed the other croissant and the muffins for breakfast over the next two or three mornings. The cinnamon bun tasted stale when I tried it a day or two later though so it got pitched.

As for my appetizer, I had a choice of fresh fruit and berries or a yogurt parfait. To this point of my trip I had not had much luck with the fresh fruit (which I'll get into more later) so I went with the yogurt...

Yogurt Parfait with fresh berries and homemade granola

And a close-up shot...

449c149e-bc1f-4f1c-8ed4-2243a42b2f17.jpg

This was pretty good, but I didn't eat it all because I wanted to save plenty of room for my main course...

Sci-Fi Crab and Eggs - Puff Pastry filled with Scrambled Eggs, Crab, Asparagus, and Gruyere Cheese with a Roasted Tomato and Avocado (which is the green stuff that looks like guacamole in the middle of the plate)

And a close-up of the Roasted Tomato and Avocado...

I believe that was grated parmesan cheese on the tomato.

Then some close-ups of the main dish...

I'm not sure if the placement of the crab was done to be cute or scary, but since this was the Sci-Fi Dine-in I'm going to say they were going for scary...but in a cute way. ;)

Anyway here is what the contents of the puff pastry looked like...

As you can see the asparagus was pretty plentiful but as for the crab, not so much. Overall the flavor of the scrambled eggs was rather bland and I thought would have benefited from some seasoning. This seemed to be the consensus of our car, because later when the chef came around looking for comments, suggestions for improvement, etc. my three dining companions all told him that they wished their entrees had had more salt added. I'm not sure what the ladies in the front had ordered but the gentlemen in the middle seat looked to have had the Traditional Breakfast with scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes.

So I would have to give this test a somewhat mediocre grade. Our server was great and the chef coming to our car to solicit comments was a nice touch. However, the food, or at least the entree that I tried, doesn't really warrant a return visit for me, assuming this breakfast is continued after Jan. 23rd. I had several great breakfasts on this trip, but this was not really one of them. Not bad, but not great.

NOTE: Despite the fact that I took my time eating and took many photos, I was still done with breakfast and out of the restaurant by 8:40. With the park opening at 9:00, I could have probably been on Toy Story before most of the crowd entered the park. So if you are able to get an early morning ADR (8 - 8:15), this breakfast would get you early access to the rides at a cheaper price than Hollywood & Vine.

Glad to hear your review on the new breakfast. I've heard good things about it and others have said its just ok. I've done sci if for lunch and that was good.

Can't wait to hear about the rest of the trip.

Hi Barb! I'm glad to see you weighing in on the Merry and Bright Dessert party as well as the Sci-Fi breakfast. Those are two that we've booked in a couple weeks. I still follow you on IG so I don't miss all the gorgeous food photos but it's good to be here and read all the dining details!

Hey Barb! Everything looks amazing so far! I am insanely jealous of your long and well timed trip to take advantage of F&W and the start of the Christmas season.

Everything sounds amazing from your Osbourne Lights party. I want to try a few of those drinks along with the pie and ice cream.

I'm thinking maybe I'll skip Sci-Fi's breakfast though. It does remind me of the Be Our Guest breakfast.

Can't wait to read more!

I'm so glad to see your review on the Sci-Fi breakfast. We have an ADR there next month. Should I sneak some salt and pepper in my bag for this? I know hubby won't let me cancel.

Your dining reports are awesome! I always think I am going to do a report and take pics of the food but then never do one. I might just have to this time!
The party was identical to yours. I am not sure if they let people in early because we didn't make it over there until later. Unfortunately, this meant getting a bad seat (not in the front), however we did move to the front once people left! The food and drinks were the same. The blanket will be nice to have as this is the last year for the lights :(

Based on your review, I am happy we didn't book Sci Fi for breakfast. I was on the fence but would have had to change our scheduled to fit it in. So we decided against it!

Once I'd been checked I was allowed to get in line at the turnstiles (are they still called turnstiles now that they don't actually have a turnstile?? :scratchin).

They're called "touch points" now :).
I've been wondering about that breakfast - thanks for giving us the scoop!

Your breakfast looked great, too bad it did not taste as good. They should add some Garlic Pepper...I swear that makes everything better!
Looking to the rest of your trip!!

:flower3: Hi there. Me and my stomach are happy to follow along! Looking forward to more.

Welcome to both you and your stomach! :thumbsup2

It will be interesting to see if this breakfast is continued after it's test period is over in January.

Thanks Jeri! I remember a couple of years ago when you had a super long trip during the F & W festival and did all that great reporting for the live thread. I never thought it possible then for me to take a long WDW trip like that. But then with the help of some great Bounce Back rates and the fact that we are empty nesters now, well the moons somehow aligned perfectly and I was able to take a two week trip both this year and last. Unfortunately the bounce back rates aren't offered during F & W next year so this was likely my last hoorah. But it was so fun while it lasted. ;)

I'm so glad to see your review on the Sci-Fi breakfast. We have an ADR there next month. Should I sneak some salt and pepper in my bag for this? I know hubby won't let me cancel.

It probably wouldn't hurt. But hopefully the chef took the advice of my fellow diners and tweeked his recipes a bit. :thumbsup2

In hindsight I wish I'd had breakfast elsewhere that morning because I missed out on one of my favorite WDW breakfasts on this trip. But of course, hindsight is 20/20. ;)

They're called "touch points" now :).

Touch points, that makes perfect sense! Thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

Looking to the rest of your trip!!

Hmmm, garlic pepper...that does sound good! ::yes::

My trip began on October 23rd with my 6:30 p.m. arrival at the Orlando airport. I knew that I was cutting it close, but the latest ADR I could get that night at my chosen Epcot restaurant was 9:00 p.m., on a Friday night when the park was open until 10:00. Luckily things went smoothly at the airport and at 7:45 I took this photo from the front seat of my Magical Express bus...

I was still a little nervous though when our bus driver announced that we would be stopping first at the Yacht Club, then the Beach Club, before my resort destination, the Boardwalk. But again the stops went smoothly and not long after 8:00 I'd arrived...

I had already checked in online and had received a text with my room number (3292) as soon as I turned my phone back on upon arrival at the airport. So I was able to completely bypass the lobby and go straight to my room, which was on the 3rd floor of the Inn side of the resort. On my last trip in May I also stayed at the Boardwalk but on the Villas side. Although I had requested to be close to the lobby/elevator our villa (#2010) was about as far from the lobby as you could be. I actually think we were closer to the lobby at the Swan then we were to the Boardwalk lobby. So anyway I was thrilled when this time I only had to go up one floor on the elevator, take a left turn down the hallway and pass only one room before arriving at my home for the next 13 nights, Room 3292. SCORE!! :woohoo: And even better was that my Magic Band actually magically opened the door (no problems like we had at both resorts during my last visit). ;)

And then the icing on the cake was that my room was huge...the largest standard room I've ever had at Disney World.

Here is the usual amount of space between the beds and the sofa and t.v. cabinet...

I seemed to have forgotten to take photos of the bathroom/closet area but it too was over-sized with a big closet (that I filled with the two weeks worth of clothes I brought ;)), a large counter area with two sinks, and a separate, large bathroom with the toilet more than a yardstick away from the bathtub/shower instead of them being right on top of each other like usual. And this was not a handicapped room. So if you want a big room at a standard view room price, ask if Room 3292 is available. :thumbsup2

Anyway, I was in and out of my room fairly quickly and soon on my way (by foot) to the International Gateway entrance to Epcot. I reached my destination at 8:30, 1/2 hour early for my dining reservation at France's signature restaurant...

After checking in at the desk, located in the back of the same building that houses Les Chefs de France, I had barely sat down when they called my name. I was guided up the winding staircase to the dining room upstairs and was seated at a two-top table right next to a window. SCORE! (This trip was starting off well!) :goodvibes

As you can see I was presented with two menus. The first was the Prix Fixe Menu...

And then the regular menu...

The Prix Fixe Menu options had a set price of $89.00 or if using the regular Dining Plan then 2 entitlements (credits) + $30.50 OOP. So with the Dining Plan you are basically paying an extra $30.50 for an appetizer. And of the three available appetizer options of the Prix Fixe Menu, the most expensive (the lobster) was only $29.00. And if not using the Dining Plan, and you ordered the most expensive appetizer (again the lobster), entree (the filet), and dessert (all of which are $13) from the regular menu then you would be spending only $86. So what was I missing? Why would anyone choose to pay more money by ordering from the Prix Fixe Menu? :confused3 And then I discovered a possible reason. The two entree choices on the Prix Fixe Menu (NY Strip Steak and Lamb Chop) are not available on the regular menu. So if you have your heart set on one of these entrees and willing to pay the extra money for them, then I guess the Prix Fixe is the way to go. As for me, I preferred the options on the regular menu so my three courses cost me a total of $73 (plus tax and gratuity).

So anyway, after placing my order I took a minute to look around at this beautiful restaurant and snapped a few photos from my table...

The pretty chandeliers caught my eye...

A girl then came by my table carrying this basket...

They all looked delicious and I was starving, as I hadn't eaten anything for more than 12 hours other than peanuts on the airplane. But I politely only took one, soliciting the girl's advice as to which one to choose...

My choice doesn't appear to be particularly wonderful, however the dark pieces that can be seen in this roll are bacon. NEED I SAY MORE?!?! ;)

Then my first course arrived...

Mixed Greens Salad with Roquefort Cheese, Pear and Caramelized Pecans

Now I never thought I would find a blue (or bleu) cheese that I didn't like but then I tried this one. Although it certainly wasn't bad, I didn't love it as I normally love blue cheese. However the rest of the salad ingredients were good, especially the sweet slices of pear that circled the greens.

While I was still eating my salad, a food runner placed my entree on the table and quickly walked away. I was a little perturbed by this, but not nearly as much as my server. When she saw what had happened she darted to my table and began apologizing profusely. She asked if she could take my entree back to the kitchen to keep it warm for me until I was done with my salad and I agreed. Soon afterwards, I saw her across the room giving the food runner what appeared to be a tongue-lashing. ;)

So anyway, once I'd finished the salad my entree was again brought to the table...this time by my server.

Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Mushroom Crust and Bordelaise Sauce

The mashed potatoes which accompanied my entree were served in a separate dish/bowl...

The steak was cooked to the medium temperature that I had requested, so the meat was for the most part pink but not red...

I mention this because I would have trouble with all of the other steaks which I ordered for the remainder of this trip. While the very center of this steak was a little less cooked than I like, it was still far better than the steaks which will come later.

The mushroom (and I think maybe potato) crust thing on top was very salty, too salty. Unfortunately though the steak was a little bland tasting on its own and I didn't care for the bordelaise sauce which came with it. The mashed potatoes were good but not as tasty as those served at Yachtsman Steakhouse. I seem to recall them having a mushroom flavor, which was okay but I probably would have enjoyed them more without it.

While eating my entree, the girl with the bread basket returned to my table. This time I took my nephew's advice and chose the poppy seed roll...

This was good, but I'd have to say my first roll was better.

After all of this food, I was surprised to still feel hungry enough for dessert but somehow I was. Here are the desserts from which I had to choose...

Just as my dessert choice was delivered to the table, Illuminations began. While my view of the fireworks was not perfect because of some trees plus the reflection from the window, it was an added bonus for this meal that I was not expecting. :goodvibes

So anyway, here are a few of the photos that I took...

After Illuminations I then focused my attention on my dessert...

DSC00066.jpg

Warm Chocolate Almond Cake with Raspberry Coulis in the center, Hazelnut Crust, and Hazelnut Ice Cream

Even though I'm not a big fan of hazelnut flavor, I still really enjoyed this. :thumbsup2

Oh, and to add to the warm fuzzies that I was feeling, I then witnessed a marriage proposal at a nearby table. The woman was totally taken by surprise and was genuinely gushing with happiness. It was so heart-warming to see. And the restaurant helped to make it extra special by giving them glasses of champagne with which to toast their new engagement plus a special dessert.

By 10:30 I was finished and it was time to tackle the long winding staircase down...

It was amazing though how much easier it was this time than last. Because the last time I dined at Monsieur Paul was last year for the French Regional F & W Lunch, at which I had at least 8 glasses of champagne. :faint: So walking down these stairs when they remained "stationary" seemed like a breeze.

And then one last photo was taken before leaving the park, in the beautiful France pavilion area...

Looking at this photo with the replica of the Eiffel Tower in the background reminds me of the terrible tragedy which recently occurred in Paris and all I can say is

Vive la France!

That meal looks great! I haven't ever eaten there before but it does look great. Even with the trees in the way that view is very good for illuminations during dinner. The France pavilion is one of my favorites.

The food looks great, Barb. I am longing to do another extended stay at Disney...meaning longer than 7 nights.

Your meal at Monsieur Paul looks amazing! I have heard great things about that restaurant, but we have not yet been there. We were walking past Chefs de France last week and we discussed eating there sometime. Both sound great.

Monsieur Paul looked great! I am glad your entree was taken back so you were not rushed. I would have had a hard time resisting all that yummy bread! It is truly a beautiful restaurant :flower1:

I'm glad you were pleased. But if I were served bread, usually a vegetarian item, without warning that it contained meat, I'd be upset. Did they explain the individual rolls, or was it a surprise to you?
