Foley artist question

I remember years ago (probably in the early 90s) there being a detailed demonstration in one of the MGM Studios attractions of how a foley artist performs his/her job. I can't remember what it was though (can anyone help me remember?). It was very entertaining and interesting and something I didn't even know existed.

Does anyone know if there is any attraction that dedicates themselves to that now? I would be sure to visit it if I knew for sure it still existed.

I think Foley artists were those who created the sound effects for movies, TV, etc. They would use different item to recreate natural sounds that you couldn't get on a soundstage.

No, no....I understand what a foley artist does because of that attraction that I saw in the early 90s, but I'm just wondering now if that attraction stills exists or if a new one was put in its place.

That was part of the Backstage Studio Tour. You toured the "working studios"(sound stages) at MGM. Part of that studio complex is where they now perform "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire-Play It."

During the "walking tour", there was a film starring Mel Gibson and PeeWee Herman (that's right), they showed you various aspects of movie production. Foley was one of them.

There was also the Monster Sound Show starring Chevy Chase & Martin Short.
The pre-show video was a clip from the David Letterman Show with guest Jimmy MacDonald, a Disney sound fx wizard.

There is still a small display in the post-show area of Sounds Dangerous (which can be accessed without sitting through the attraction by entering through the automatic exit doors.) There is a table featuring two activities. In one you are given the chance to provide the clip-clop of horsehooves on gravel, marble, and wood in time with a video clip from Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow (part of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.) In the other you provide the sound effects for another short cartoon such as the sounds of a sputtering car. This is a very small activity, but definitely worth the short amount of time it takes. (And while you're there you can enjoy the 3D sound booths and other interactive activities.) I hope this helps!

Other than the tiny "clip-clop" deal at Sounds Dangerous, no.

Foley is one of the many jobs I do in my production business.

It was fun to see the "working studios" back when MGM was new.

There were windows looking into the working video editing suites and TV control-rooms as well as the audio recording studios.
These are all my "briar patch" as I've been in this media creation and TV production business for years.

I have some friends that DID edit some projects in those areas when the tours were still happening.
They pretended to "fight" and do other "kooky" things to see if they could catch the attention of the guests walking by.
