We are leaving for Disney in 8 days!!! Whoo hoo! This is the first time I will be flying since I started using Byetta. It comes in a pen that I screw needles onto to inject. I'd like to pack my medication in my carry on, so it doesn't get lost. We are flying Southwest, and I've searched their site and the TSA site, but have found no information about traveling with sharps. Will I get through security with pen needles in my purse?

I tend to fly at least five roundtrips per year and carry both insulin syringes and pen needles (and all my medications) in my carry-on and have never been questioned.

DD travels with saline solution, huber needles & syringes. and she has flown a lot in the past year. She always takes her medical supplies out of her carry on and mentions it to TSA. Sometimes they look at it, sometimes they tell her that it does not need to be out and occasionally they pull her aside and wand her. I guess it depends on the airport & the screener. Everyone she has encountered has been friendly about it. Many of them are surprised that she has so much medical equipment because she is only 19 and "looks so healthy."

As long as it is medical equipment, you should be fine.

I fly all the time with my epi pens. TSA has never said a thing or even asked to look at them.

Hope you had a great trip! I fly with my pen needles on Southwest all the time and never have a problem. I usually don't even remember to mention that I have them and I've never been questioned. I figure they must see lots of them.

When I've flown and needed to take unopened Byetta or insulin, I've taken a small cooler with an icepack or ice cubes in a ziploc bag. I do remember to mention to security that I have medical supplies in the cooler and I've never had a problem.

Byetta has gotten much easier to use since they dropped the recommendation that the in-use pen had to be kept refrigerated!
