Flying with niece

My kids have state issued IDs, it makes traveling easier with all the new rules. I am taking my niece with me this trip, I'll have sis get her ID, but I'm a little worried since she's not "mine." Has anyone traveled since 2001 with a minor, extended family member? Anything I should plan for?

Every airline is a little bit different with this. Go to your airline's website, and there should be info about flying with minors.

I would get a notarized letter from your sister, stating that you have permission to take her daughter on the trip, the dates, and that during that time period you are responsible for the child, including decisions regarding medical care.

TrickyFish is right. I work for an attorney and that would definately be the right thing to do. Just make sure that it is a NOTARIZED letter.

Twice we have taken my son's best friend with us on our DCL/WDW trips. I had a notarized temporary guardianship form that I brought along with copies of his medical insurance and dental insurance cards. I never once had to show/use any of these, but I felt much better having them "just in case". For the cruise, there was an actual form in our documents that I had to have his mom sign and have notarized, authorizing us to have him travel with us. I travel frequently with my little nephew - always carry a copy of his birth certificate and medical insurance info - have never been asked for his ID and have never needed to seek medical attention - my sis is always available by phone and fax when we're travelling - think I'll check out the temp guardian form - thanks for linking it!
