Flying with medicine

Hi all,

My son is on day 6 of 10 days on amoxicillin. We leave Friday (day 8), sadly not to Disney. I'm looking for advice on how to travel with the liquid medicine since it has to stay cold. Since it is just the 2 of us I am debating putting it in the checked luggage so we don't have to take any longer in security. Would an insulated bag with an ice pack be good enough? He'll take some right before we leave home and his next dose won't be until 24 hours later so I'm not worried about losing luggage.

I know the rules, just looking for some suggestions on what has worked for others in the past.

Thanks!

I would never put it in your checked luggage. We always do our carry on, and with a prescription on the bottle you should not have any problems.
To keep it cool, I would use an insulated bag with an ice pack. Not sure how long your flight is, but many of the ice packs out there will keep things cool for several hours. Also check to see what temp it should be kept at. My husband has one that says under 70 degrees, which at certain times of the year doesn't need to be in the refrigerator. It may be something that will remain cool enough on its own on the plane, as they tend to be really cool.

You may find that the time you need to worry about the most is your arrival until you get to your final destination where you can get it back in the refrigerator. O would suggest you take a small ziplock bag in case you need to ask a restaurant for some ice to keep it cool on the last leg of your trip ( or even the flight attendants).

The delay at security for the medicine will be minimal if any delay at all. When my son was an infant I would travel with a large bottle of milk (well over the 3 oz limit) and an ice pack. I was never questioned about the milk or the ice pack. Just be sure to take them out and put them in a tray to go through the scanner. The only delay I had was about 1 minute once when they wanted to check the milk for explosives or something of that nature.

I think either way you will be fine, but for me I would like to have the medication with me, and would lug it through security just to be safe. If luggage gets lost sometimes it gets very very lost and will not appear even within 24 hours.
