The acoustics on an airplane are very strange. You may not be able to hear the sound well, but the person across the aisle and behind you can hear it crystal clear. The sounds in kids' movies are irritating. Please just do the right thing and use earphones or don't bring it. Many people (like me) don't like to complain.
And, honestly, I've traveled with 4 kids multiple times per year since 1998, including international flights from Texas to Europe with 4 little kids -- I've never brought a DVD player.
