Flying with Amoxicillin--how to keep it cold?

Though you *should* be allowed to have a gel pack through security, not all TSA agents apply the rules consistently or properly. If you aren't able to get chewables, I would bring the gel pack, point out to security and if they take it from you, don't worry about it. Bring some empty ziplock baggies and once you are through security go to one of the vendors and ask them to fill one up with ice. If you bring a insulated bag, then the baggie of ice inside of it should keep the ammox cool for the rest of your trip. You can also ask for ice refills on the plane if need be.

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions. DD is 20 months, so I don't trust her willingness to take the chewables (she's a picky eater, too). Our pediatrician asked if we'd prefer Z-pack, but said it might not be as effective, so we opted for the amoxicillin...I don't want to risk her not getting better while we're out of town. So...I think we'll take a gel pack or bag of ice to the airport, and will just refill in the airport/plane if security takes it from us...I've heard differeing opinions on needing to keep it cold, so I'd rather err on the side of caution. Just call your pharmacy and ask them if it needs to be chilled. They are there to help you with medication questions and they are educated to give you correct advice, that's why they are paid very well for what they do. I agree with all of the other posters that it does not have to be chilled, so don't worry about the gel packs. If it were augmentin it would be a different story, but it is not. You could just call the manf. of the amoxicillin and ask them if it needs to be chilled if you don't trust your pharmacist. If you are really worried about it, call your Dr. and ask them to call in an extra rx for the trip. Then ask the pharmacy to not reconstitute it but put the correct amount of distilled water in a bottle to be added when you get there. Hope your little one is feeling much better and enjoy your trip!
