Flying w/ 9 month old on lap

I have been in rough, and I mean rough, turbulence and seen flight attendants who were ready to change their under wear. Luckily no babys on that trip.

Pooh Pooh it if you like, but when you experience it, it will make a believer out of you.

Do you really think anyone considers money more important than their child? OP never said it was question of money.

Don't know, but I would buy the ticket without hesitation!!

Interesting, on British flights the babies have to have a lap belt that attaches on top of the adult belt, thus securing the child.

Russian Roulette.....one loaded chamber and six empty ones.

Would you be comfortable playing it??? I wouldn't!!!

Do you buy a seat and belt the little one in......... or do you consider money more important??????

Your choice!!!!!!

Turbulence can be rare, but.....it can't be predicted and when it does happen the ride can be rough......very rough. I've watched food trays hit the ceiling and you cannot react fast enough to stop it.

Then there is gravity. A 20 pound child in an instant can become 500 pounds.

If the worst does happen.......how long will it take to get the plane on the ground to get the injured medical attention. And then there is the guilt afterwards.

:sad2: A bit harsh!!

OP, I have flown with my 8-month old on my lap, and everything was fine, even with some turbulence. Alot of people do it. I know you love your child more than money. It is not a game of Russian Roulette!! The odds of strong turbulence are not 1 in 6 and it is not fair to you to make that comparison. If they have scared you into buying another ticket, I still hope you have a nice trip! People have lap children all of the time! Please don't be offended by the "We are the only ones who are going to survive this flight because we love our children more than you" people and have a great trip!! :wave2:

To each his own. Turbulence is the leading cause of non-fatal flight injuries. Almost 60 passengers are injured each year, according to U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

My dad flies a lot and he once saw people hitting their heads on the overhead bins because the plane dropped suddenly when it hit an air pocket. He swore that he would never, ever go without his seat belt on. I personally would not want to have a child in my lap and hit a pocket like that. My dad said there was no warning.

I think the British have it right. A seat belt that attaches to the adults seat belt would be wise. It has to be a lot cheaper than another seat and it is secure, compared to not being strapped in at all.

Everyone has to make their own choices, but I know that I would want my little one strapped in somehow.

Don't sweat it . I went from Newark to Orlando in Dec 2004 with twin 1 year (it was there birthday)olds and a four year old. Yes I needed to get my head examined but would I do it again , Yes . It was not as bad as many would think , and actually on the return trip I had a nice lady complement me on how good they were on the trip. Just remember Pacifiers but what we found was even better was juice or water bottles. And no I was not the only adult , My wife was the ROCK on that trip

I have flown with my little one, 9 months old on a red eye from LAX to ATL, we had some problems but we had just flown 12 hours she did have a seat on that flight though!! LOL We had another leg from ATL to Phila, which was a nice flight because it was not crowded. It was a total of 22 hours and she did better than Mommy and Daddy! LOL

I also flew with her from PHL to Orlando which was fine. I think 60 people a year is a pretty low number for the amount of people who fly. Your baby is probably more at risk in your car than in an airplane.

Whatever you decide please have a wonderful, fun trip!!!

Have we ever asked why the number is low. Could it be that.......almost all the passengers are wearing seat belts?

Think about it.

EXCELLENT point, manning!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I saw a lap child smack his head against a tray table when we hit some turbulance in March. Had the child been buckled in, he wouldn't have been sporting a lump and bruise on his head.

My comment was also followed by "Your baby is probably more at risk in your car than in an airplane"

Why do people wear seatbelts in airplanes? Could it be that they are scared, (you're more likely to be injured in your car than airplane, but they don't like to wear seatbelts in their car! :confused3 ) or in a confined space with flight attendents telling you to buckle if you are not. Alittle more attention in the air unlike the road.

The chances of injury to an unbuckled child or person on an airplane is less than that of the same "buckled" in a vehicle.

I agree that the injury rate is low in airplanes due to the fact many are wearing seatbelts. But the odds are slight that her baby or anyone elses sitting on their lap could be hurt on an airplane.

It was stated only 60 in a year!
