Flying question - aneurism clip

Back in the 80's my dad has a brain aneurism and has a aneurism clip. How will this affect the security check? Also, in 2010 he had a stroke and at times get confused. Often he'll be thinking one thing but something else will come out his mouth totally unrelated to what he's thinking.

They (my mom and dad) are flying into Sanford on a direct flight because I thought that would be the least confusing airport to land at.

Any suggestions to help him and Mom? Neither of them has been on a plane since the '90s.

It's possible it could set off a metal detector, so he should inform TSA before he walks through. If it does set off the detector, he will probably get a pat down.

It really depends on whether that airport uses metal detectors or body scanners, as I have been to airports that had one or the other. With a body scanner, it will be a lot more obvious that there is something metal in his head area than if a metal detector were to simply go off.

It is definitely recommended to tell the TSA persons that he has a metal clip in his head prior to going into a body scanner or metal detector and possibly requesting doing a pat-down instead. It's also a good idea to, as always, arrive at the airport with more than enough time to catch your flight and using the security lanes designated for non-occasional travelers (I believe they are the blue circle lanes).

No, it won't. Body scanners do not show anything inside your body!

Do either body scanners or metal detector machines use magnets? He was told he could never have an MRI because of the magnet.

I want to really echo the allow as much time as possible part. It's been taking me even longer than normal recently to get through security so that even when there's no line, it can take me 20-30 minutes (I use a wheelchair and need to get patted down). Many airports don't seem to be the most organized about making sure there are people around who can do pat downs.

Metal detectors use magnets so your father's clip would set those off (that's how they detect). He (or your mother) should tell the screeners that he has the clip and that it will set the scanner off. The metal detector wouldn't be unsafe for him like an MRI is, but they'd end up doing a body scan or pat down anyway. They'll either send him through the body scanners (which do not use magnets) or do a pat down. As far as the language issues, he or your mother should tell TSA so they know, but hopefully it won't be a problem!

One thing to make clear to him and your mother is that if he does need a pat down, your mother can watch and talk to him, but she cannot touch him or give him any of the bags or anything until he's been cleared. My father didn't know that last time I flew with him and he tried to hand me my shoes while I was still being screened (I usually fly solo and I don't think he'd ever flown with me without my mother also there before). I always get my pat down done right by TSA, but I think if he prefers a private screening, she can still watch.

They might benefit from using airport assistance to get around the airports. That will give them another person to assist with security and may get them taken through a separate line rather than having to worry about understanding the different types of lines (if the airport uses them; my local airport doesn't). I don't know how big their home airport or Sanford are, but it may also conserve some energy for your father and/or mother to get assistance and be pushed through in a wheelchair.

Sorry to jump into this thread, but it just made me think - I'm flying Monday for the first time since getting hearing aids (behind-the-ear). Will those set of the detector? My hearing loss is such that I could fairly easily take them out (and put them in my carry on) while going through.

I would guess not; things like eyeglasses don't set them off.

Hi, '

I have both a clip in my front of my foot where I had a tendon transfer surgery, and one of my thumbs is more metal than it has bone. In addition, I wear an insulin pump. I always have problems with the TSA, but as long as you give yourself time to arrive at the airport for a possible wand, then you will be fine!

Enjoy your travels!

Thank everyone. I will pass along all the information to my parents. Do they need a doctor's note for him?

I forgot about the shoes. That's also new since he last flew.

Thankfully my dad's strength was not affected. He loves to walk. They are flying out of a small airport into another small airport. I purposely chose for them two small airports as opposed to a big one and a direct flight.

My rule of thumb is the more documentation from the doctor, the better!
