Flying out of New York - what can't I bring on the plane?

My family is leaving in a week and we haven't flown in a while. We are flying on JetBlue and they allow you one free checked bag per person and the max weight is 50 pounds.

They also allow one personal item and one carry-on per person. What is the max weight of the carry-on? I didn't read anything on their website about the weight of the carry-on, only the sie of the carry on.

It will be 4 adults and 2 kids on this trip. I already know that 2 of the adults like to travel lite and since one of them is 80 and the other is 75, they don't like to pull heavy luggage around. Since we will have a washing machine and dryer in the room, I don't plan on taking too much either.

My concern is with the other adult, my niece. She packs enough for a month even though we will only be there for 2 weeks. She loves her make up, perfume and hair care products. She wants to pack full size shampoo, conditioner, gel, mousse, perfume and everything else you could think of. Even though I told her that they aren't allowed she still wants to bring it.

Will they confiscate the full size products? Will they confiscate the full size sun tan lotion that I just went out and bought? I bought it since we got to the beach a lot during the summer, but since there will be 4 adults and 2 kids we will go through a full size bottle of sun tan lotion in 2 weeks.

I want to bring things from home so I won't have to buy it while I am on vacation, but I don't want to bring items that will be confiscated. It will cost me more in the long run.

Any advice about what items I can't bring will help.

You can pack the full size items in your checked bags but not in your carryons. They will not be confiscated from your checked bags.

For carryon bags, it is the size that is important, not the weight. For your carryons, liquids and gels are limited to 3oz or less containers, and as much as can be packed in a quart sized zip lock bag. Be careful here - if the original container held more than 3oz (say 8oz) and you have used some so that there is less than 3 oz left, it CANNOT be packed in the zip lock bag. The original container must be 3oz or less. Put the larger container in your checked bag. The zip lock bag needs to be pulled out of your carryon and is sent through security separately.

If you follow these instructions, you will have no problems.

Any items with liquids over the allowed amount (which is 3.4 ounces, not 3 ounces) in carry on will be confiscated. They are allowed in checked baggage. Why not check the tsa website for specifics?

JetBlue doesn't specific a weight limit for carry-on bags and I have found most domestic airlines don't check the weight of these as long as they meet the size limit. Lufthansa on the other hand.....

One thing to keep in mind with cabin luggage: don't pack it heavier than (a) recommended by the manufacturer, or (b) you can lift over your head to place in and remove from the overhead compartment without assistance.
