I will be sending my daughter by plane so that she can go to camp. How do I find a cheap ticket? She has never flown before. I thought about priceline but she has to leave in the afternoon.

She will be flying from Oklahoma City.
Any suggestains?

Thanks Tigger

Call directly to an Airline like United.com. I tried all the links like Orbitz and Travelocity and they made you pay a fee. The actualy airline you use don't make you pay a fee. The cheapest time for tickets is 4:00-5:00 a.m. in the morning cause the computers turn over then and list their cheapest flights. As the day goes on the tickets get more expensive.

I got our tickets on line from United, then printed my e-sheet. My husband just needed that sheet, a picture ID and the credit card I used to buy it. Otherwise call them and they may have better rates.

I'm sure your local plane carrier is the same. Out of Oklahoma.
There are great rates out there for summer good luck.

I don't know if this helps or not, but it would depend on if you could drive to anywhere other than Oklahoma City... Sometimes smaller airports cost less. For example, if you were to book a one-way flight out of Kansas City, MO to Orlando it's only $86 on Delta. I'll be taking advantage of that great rate in a few weeks when I head down there. When you go to delta.com just click on "One-way and multi-city reservations" and play around with some different airports.

Please remember that most of these special low one way fares are actually based on round trip purchase. Historically, one way fares are just as expensive as most round-trip tickets.

I do know that the $86 one-way I mentioned from Delta is simply a one-way and does not require round-trip purchase. When I looked into the one-way fares I did find out that most other airlines such as Southwest does require a round-trip purchase. You just need to make sure you read the fine print before you get too excited about a cheap fare. For example, even though Delta offers $86 one way from Kansas City, a one way from St. Louis jumps up to $225. It really just depends on which airport you choose to fly out of. I live 3 hours away from St. Louis and 3 hours away from Kansas City (I'm in Springfield, MO) so it really didn't make a difference to me on which airport to choose.

I just wanted to say that if you purchase a one-way ticket, she will probably be throughly searched by security. I am pretty positive that they will go through her bags and she will be screened and all of her carry on luggage will be searched. The airlines think that one way tickets are a security risk.

Now I don't think that you shouldn't buy a one-way ticket. If that's what you need, then that's what you need. I am just saying this because I am sure that you want to prepare her for this possibility.

I have flown one-way on SWA in the past. i have also purchased one-way tickets when their booking window wasn't open for my return flight. When they added the dates, I bought more one-way flights, still much cheaper than other carriers.

Thanks for the help. So far the lowest price for a one way is $261 from South west. This ticket is refundable. So should I go for it and keep looking for a lower price?

Thanks Tigger.

What would happen if you bought a round trip ticket and didn't use the round trip? Could you get a credit for the other part?

If you book on Southwest and their rate goes down - they can either refund the difference or give it to you as a credit (depending on the class of ticket you purchased)

You most certainly won't get a refund because one way's often cost as much or more than a roundtrip ticket...The airlines frown on this practice and actually prohibit it.

It is called throw away ticketing and is a breach of the contract of carriage you agree to when you purchase a ticket.

See:
http://www.delta.com/travel/reservations/travel_Info/fares/index.jsp Prohibitive Ticketing Practices - Throw-away ticketing—use of discounted round-trip excursion fares for one-way travel. . Using a fare without complying with the fare rules of your ticket violates our Contract of Carriage. In such cases, Delta reserves the right to: Refuse to board the passenger or check baggage, or
Charge the passenger for the difference between the fare paid and the fare for the passenger's traveled itinerary.

I used southwest for one-way travel back in December. The ticket cost TOTAL was 49.95. Nothing more...We're using them again in October when we go back to Disney

Tigger1 - Southwest just had a special that expired on thursday 99.00 one way from across the country. The other option is go on ebay or travel auctions, alot of people sell the rapid rewards certificates probably a one-way etc. around $100.00. I have used many rapid rewards, they are great, you get on any flight that has a seat available. They do have expiration dates. Any questions you can email me. lescas@hotmail.com Do you have airtran where you live, they are pretty inexpensive.

Wow, looks like I missed a great special;, $99 anywhere.
Maybe another special will come up.

My daughter might noe mind flying back as well. She would miss going to Destin though.

Try SW again. On Tuesdays they post specials on their web site. They are the most customer friendly airline I've ever used and will go out of their way to help you.

If you have a Jet blue from your airport I would try them. I checked their site the other day and you can get really inexpensive rates one way to Florida right now with the special they are running.
Click on the area that says "specials to Fl" and they will list the different rates and from which airports. I found a one way for $64 from New York. I am driving with my dad but we want to fly him home.
And Jet Blue would be good for her if she is flying alone because they have those little tv's. Would give her something to do during the flight.
