My dad is going on his first trip to Disney with us in December. He has a metal plate in his shoulder and will have medication along with him. What is the procedure for security at the airport due to these things?? I've never had to deal with this before so I'm completely clueless.

when I had total knee surgery they gave me a card (like a credit card) to show at security. Been using it since 2008 and never had a problem. I just show them the card so they know and then I step into the scaner. See if his doctor can give him a card or something, if not just make sure he tells agent at screener that he has a metal plate so they know. If he doesn't and steps in the screener they might want to do a patdown too.

TSA will not accept the card. They can be faked. If the airport has a scanner then he is OK. But if only a metal detector then he will get a pat down regardless of the card.

TSA does not care about meds unless they are liquids. No need for original bottles or scripts. I put mine in a pill wallet and never have a problem. The only exception might be a controlled substance so tbr real bottle might keep an overzealous cop at bay.

Thank you! Very helpful :)

I don't think there is an official procedure but he could tell the agent where the metal is before going through the metal detector and even put a piece of colored duct tape over his clothing in that area.

If he wants to he could wear loose fitting clothing that could be easily lifted up (only upon request; they don't like showoffs) so the agent can see that there are no loose exposed metal objects.

(For the metal in the shoulder, going around in a tank top is permissible.)

Medications can be put in a plastic Zip Lock or similar bag that does not have to be the same one that holds aftershave lotion or other liquid or "gel" items.
