Flying into Lax this weekend...

News is reporting protests have now started in Santa Ana which is on the way to Disney from LAX. Google maps show as 6.7 miles on I-5 Santa Ana to Disneyland.
Santa Ana is not between the airport and Disneyland. It's a couple cities south past Disney Anaheim area.
The main spot I would avoid is the 101 freeway if going between Universal and Disney.

Check Google maps for southern CA layout, things are much further apart than tourists may think. For example LAX is almost 20 miles away from downtown Los Angeles.

In case this helps the OP, I am currently on the 101, about 15mi or less from downtown; everything is normal. Not sure what people are seeing on the news these days.

Thank you

I check KTLA for local LA news. I also find it helps to Google Map the specific areas mentioned in local news so that I can see how far away the disruption is to where I plan to visit. I have been doing this for many years, as the LA area has regular wildfires and earthquakes.

By coincidence, this is on my Facebook Memories from 2016.
"On Irish twitter, major earthquake in LA.... LA Times reports earthquake 200 miles from LA, in a rural area... gotta love the Chinese whispers on Irish Twitter, spreading doom and gloom when they have no clue!!"

If they have all necessary documentation and are entering the country legally, they aren't going to be rejected. They may need to allow for extra time at passport control, but they'll get through.

Unless they happen to be in one of the countries that are affected by the travel ban, but I kind of doubt that.
Mistakes have been made and US citizens have been held against their will. Eastside Catholic high school in Sammamish Washington recently made a trip to Canada. White students were allowed back into the US. Students of color were detained by customs.

Unsurprisingly, this is turning political. Please stop. Let’s stick to facts - the activity that’s taking place is limited to a small area in Downtown Los Angeles. This is not the place tourists come to visit (sans urban explorers but those aren’t traditional tourists).

There are many ways to get around Los Angeles, so I wouldn’t worry about freeway disruptions. If you’re using a car service or traveling with a GPS, it isn’t likely you’d be routed onto the Holllywood Freeway on a normal day as it’s literally bumper-to-bumper nearly 24/7.

Just over 100 people showed up to the protests in Santa Ana. It was peaceful, short lived and much ado about nothing. Tons of political theater, with multiple planes and helicopters overhead.

Unless ICE decides to visit The Happiest Place On Earth, I wouldn’t worry - relax and enjoy your trip. It’ll be business as usual.

Frankly, if you don't feel it's a safe time to go you shouldn't go. If you don't feel safe, you aren't going to have a good vacation because your anxiety will be off the charts. Even if you feel safe at Disneyland you could spend the whole trip freaking out about getting back to LAX to go home. Disneyland isn't going anywhere.
Thanks for this :) - I'm not at all worried about DL... and fortunately we have friends to see in Texas after DL so not heading straight home.

That's helpful thanks

Most people try to overcome irrational fears. But then again, this is a Disney forum…
:) Really just checking on best routes given the possibility of disruption. Hopefully it all de-escalates soon. We are experienced travellers, but have from time to time ended up in places at non-ideal times (like Athens in 2015!) It's always good to get the lay of the land ahead of time.

I had a colleague tell me they wouldn't travel to LA this year, thinking the whole region was in ruins from the fires. I explained how that is not the case, but they didn't believe me. I'm not trying to minimize the damage from what happened in January, but I think the news has a tendency to negatively impact people's perceptions, especially for those unfamiliar with a particular area.

I think unless you've lived in California (or at least traveled the state extensively),people don't realize how huge and diverse the state is, in environments, climate, terrain, etc. Many years ago, when I lived in Hollywood, there were riots somewhere (Compton maybe) and my family pestered me constantly...."don't go out at night, don't go here, don't do that, we want you to be safe"...LOL I wouldn't have even known how to get there if I wanted! Same with earthquakes...

The media exaggerates EVERYTHING these days...it wasn't always that way but now everything that happens is blown out of proportion, largely due to social media.

Live your lives, people....trust me, it goes by way faster than you think.

And not going to DTLA is a good idea any time 🤣😂

Right? I mean, it's not like there is anything to do! Once a long time ago I was there for a event at the convention center (video games, super cool!), but the first night all the gang from the website gathered there, we were standing in front of a convenience store on Olympic - there were like 20 of us, mostly kinda naive "kids" (at least to me). A police car pulled up, and the boss asked the cop if there was anywhere he could take his crew to get a bite to eat. She looked at us and back at him and said, "You know where you are, right?" 🤣 I hadn't been there, but kinda knew (these were a lot of people who didn't know you couldn't get change on the bus). That was quite the trip, but I helped them get around - even on the subway!

OMG..Have heard that same comment as well but in a different city....it's why I always laugh when people say they want to go to Hollywood...it was horrible when I lived there decades ago (although I lived in a nicer area) but Hollywood Blvd. was awful. Tourist trap like Vegas...

Yeah, we also went to Hollywood for a press conference - in the Dolby Theater, very cool - but there isn't anything else to really do right there in that area. I did get them there on the subway. Interestingly, I was asked, "How long have you lived in LA?" 🤣 I don't, I just got there a couple of hours earlier, did some exploring, and understand how transit systems work. I was kind of the "older guy" there at the time - and I was like 30.

I do like "Hollywood" but more for going on studio tours or Universal - that's not really in the same area. WB is over in Burbank!
