Ok, this one is for Peter Pirate 2!

We made an ADR late Monday afternoon for the same day. Easily got a 7:40 ADR for a party of 3. Arrived at about that time and were seated quickly. We requested the bar, which is where we sat last time. I didn't want to sit in front of the kitchen area, at the bar there...all those flames stress me out! If you have ever dined there, you'll know what I am talking about.:goodvibes

Our waiter was Ken, and he ROCKED! I really need to contact FF and let management know what a pleasure he was. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. He seemed to really enjoy his job, had great opinions that he shared on menu items and wine selections, was always there when you needed him without being obtrusive...I just can't say enough about him.

We sat down and I ordered my signature drink...a ketel one dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Here is a thread about the price discrepancies between drinks at FF and Raglan Road...http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1821685

My only small complaint is I could tell the blue cheese stuffed olives were the jarred kind...not the hand stuffed BC olives I have at most places. The cheese was kind of dry, not creamy. Certainly did not stop me from eating them!

DH and I shared the mussels appetizer. Absolutely delicious, especially with the bread that is served in the bread basket. It is some sort of pesto cream sauce that is very rich. The mussels were plump and fresh. Usually when I order mussels, there is one or two that taste a little "funky" but none of these did.

For our entrees, DH ordered the lambchops. I was shocked, DH NEVER orders lamb. He joked about being like George Costanza on Seinfeld and doing the OPPOSITE of whatever he usually does. If you are a Seinfeld fan, that will make sense. He loved it. I took a bite and it was such a clean, flavorful meat. Did not have that strong taste that some lamb has. I don't mind the strong taste, but I can see where someone who is "on the fence" about lamb would be turned off by it.

DH ordered a half bottle of a cab sav from, of all places, IDAHO. I think it was called "Sawtooth." Went perfectly with the lamb.

I had a second dirty martini and ordered the scallops with english pea risotto. I was hesitant because I was very hungry and wasn't sure that only 3 scallops would fill me, but I ended up giving DH one of my scallops and a good portion of the risotto because I was stuffed. The scallops were cooked perfectly...so many places overcook them. The risotto was so creamy and flavorful. I would order this again.

DD9 ordered the kids pasta with parmesan cheese and butter. She wanted me to mention in my review that the parm that came with the dish was very powdery, but when she asked for more, she was brought "good parmesan cheese....like little sticks instead of powder." I am glad she notices these things!

I really wanted the cheese plate for dessert, but DH vetoed that and we shared the maple pecan tart. I wish I had the menu in front of me, I'd like to give you all the exact names or the items. Anyway, it was yummy and as full as we were, the perfect size to share. Oh, before dessert, Ken gave us a sample of some port...called "Amore?" It had a chocolate flavor and was the most delicious after dinner drink I have had. I could definitely substitute it for dessert.

DD had the white chocolate mickey puzzle, that comes with edible paints and a paintbrush. It also came with a little chocolate cupcake and that tasted awful...like chemicals. Something was wrong with it, really.

We used our DDE card, and I expected that the 18% gratuity would be added on, but it wasn't. The check came to a little over $150 before the discount, and we tipped $40 for the great service and port sample.

Soooo...FF is still a winner in our book. We look forward to dining there again soon. Maybe one day with PP2 and his family??????:confused3

Thanks for the review!

Ken was our server in March. We brought friends for their first FF visit. They loved everything about the meal.

I had the dirty martini there a couple of years ago and I understand what you mean about the olives. The bleu cheese was like the kind in the tubs at the supermarket.
btw, next time get the cheese plate! mmmmmm!

I promise...DH will NOT keep me from the cheese plate next time!

I will make sure I ask for Ken again. Did you also sit at the bar? I am wondering if that is the station he normally works, or if they rotate postions.

No, we were in the very back. The little circle area off to the left. We've never been that far into the restaurant before, normally we end up at one of the very first tables when you enter the dining room near the kitchen.

The cheese plate rocks-- Jiko and CG also have incredible plates! I LOVE my cheese!

yeah, I noticed that little circle area for the first time this trip. It looks cozy in there!

I have had the cheese plate at CG...YUM! I'm a cheesy gal, too!:rotfl:

Have a good night!

Small world. I JUST tried those stuffed olives on Friday, and thought they were excellent. I have to find a place that carries them around these parts, besides World Market. William-Sonoma did not have any when we looked over the weekend.

Great review.

Oh, please...make your own! I know my DH loves me:love: when I come home and there is a little tupperware of handmade BC stuffed olives in the fridge. We buy crumbled blue cheese, usually Boars Head brand, and we buy the big pitted olives (cuz you do not want to be pulling pimentoes out with a tweezer...and yes, i have done that!) and make 'em ourselves.

I'll never forget sitting at the Territory Lounge at the WL and watching the bartender with a small pastry bag, standing behine the bar and filling the olives with a creamy blue cheese mixture.

I have tried a few jarred BC stuffed olives, and they just were not very good.

Thanks for a great review of one of my favorite places in all of the World.:goodvibes DH had the mussels and scallops the last time we went and both dishes were excellent!

Thanks for the review & I especially appreciate your thread on price discrepancies! FF is on my list of places to try for drinks & apps & now I can rationalize it as being an "inexpensive" option (yeah...right).

This is the downside of making your own ...you end up spoiling yourselves. My husband had started by making his own maraschinos, then came the homemade sour mix, the mint syrup, the brown sugar syrup. It's gotten to the point where we can't drink out anymore :rotfl: .

But...I've gotta say that it never occurred to me to make my own BC stuffed olives. I love them, but the only ones that I can find are in oil rather than brine (which will leave an oil slick on top of a martini...ick). So I'll be making a batch of BC stuffed the next time I come home from the market!

Now if I could just find out where I can get my hands on one of those "Flying Fish" plates...

Hmmm, maybe lick your plate clean and shove it in a large shopping bag strategically placed under the table?:rotfl:

I do sometimes make my own simple syrup for mojitos, but other than that, you have me beat. Next time you have a cocktail party...can I come?

Well, I see people prefer positive reviews.;) just a joke, just a joke.:rotfl:

WLLover, I am very happy you're happy there. The risotto was biggest disappointment as they were my fave place on earth to get it (risotto). I may try again in a year or so, if the reviews remain generally positive but I'll be ordering the lamb chops next time.

Thanks for the review. Flying Fish is one of our favorite places to dine.

yum....blue cheese stuffed olives in a martini! I had them for the first time at FF and spent the rest of my vacation asking in every signature restaurant that I tried if they had them. Artist Point had them, too.

When I sat at the chef's counter, the chef sent over a sample of the risotto for me to try. It wasn't something I really enjoyed but I did notice that he made a fresh batch for each order that came up. I thought that was interesting.

I really enjoyed both meals I had at the FF. Red snapper one night and salmon the other.

The study in strawberries dessert was absooooluuuutely wonderful!

Loved the review! :thumbsup2 Hope your experience is the one that stands the test of time!:wizard:

Please tell your hubby he is lucky to have you!! I love to cook but stuffing olives with blue cheese is not something I'm planning on doing anytime soon!;)

LOL...please reread my post...I said my HUBBY stuffs them for MEEEE! Now, honestly...it is usually me stuffing them for myself. But when hubby wants to "woo" me, he knows how to stuff an olive, baby!

Did you notice the ones at AP were better? because that is where I saw the bartender filling them by hand.

mmm, ok, there is no blue cheese in the house...this thread has me craving a few!:sad2:

Believe me, PP2...that is how *I* felt when I posted my thumbs down review of BZ. I felt like everyone thought i was being nit picky, or had bad taste. I just made an ADR today for BZ for our late Sept trip. I need to try it one more time (oh, and get that free child care for 2 hours at Camp Dolphin! Can't beat that! Although...they don't take the DDE card, so i guess the joke's on me.)
