I've been on three Disney Cruises but never been in this situation so I'm not sure of what the situation is. Maybe someone else has experience with it?

I am a diabetic and there is a chance that I might be on insulin when we take our cruise in March 2003. Normally I am treated by pills but while I'm feeding my daughter I have to be on insulin.

I know that I can get a doctor's note for a fridge to keep my drugs, and I know that all my meds need to be in their original containers with the prescription info on them, but I'm wondering if anyone has had a problem carrying their supplies while traveling?

First off, on the airplane. I understand they frown on razors, knives and other sharp things. I totally understand that, but how do they handle syringes? Do I need a doctor's note stating that I need them? What about the blood testing kit?

Also getting on the boat. Anyone have problems there? Hopefully the doctor's note would solve any issues there.

Thanks for any info you might have!

Shmoogrrl,

Funny coincidence, I just printed all of these rules off for my Girl Scout troop. As I recall the syringes are ok, as are pens, etc as long as they are clearly marked in professional packaging. The entire list can be found through the FAA site - links to TSB site I think. I read all of this and then put them in packets for my girls to work with so it isn't handy.

But I know it was addressed and shouldn't be a problem.

If you cannot get all your answers here, call DCL and ask for special services. You might also post this to the disABILITIES board, someone there is bound to know the answers.

Deb,

Thanks for the quick answer! I'll check out the FAA site.

*WHEW* I read that article boutthe lady that had to drink the bottles of breast milk and begn to get worried that they'd make me shoot up all the insulin in the bottle to make sure it is real! Hehehe....Okay, I was joking about that part....

Thanks again!

Carla,

Ohh Good idea! I keep forgetting that there are other boards out there! :)

I also strongly recommend that you contact DCL (or have your TA contact them) and ask for their 'Medical needs' form. It can be faxed back and forth, for convenience.

The medical needs form is a one page form that you list your medical needs on and then fax it back to them so they can be aware of your situation and make any preparations required.

I use it to make them aware that I have Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and they make a very good effort to help me find foods that do not contain sugar when prepared. They notify the Head Server for your area in the dining room and the server and assistant server are also informed. The Head Server on our last cruise came around each evening and made sure I was taken care of, which made the server more aware, and I didn't have any problems.

Since our diets would be the same, I would suggest using the form for you also. The same form would allow you to inform them that you need a refrig to store your insulin, so it would have two benefits.

hope that helps

I was visting to Cruise board and saw this thread. Besides the advice you already got, I would suggest carrying a note from your doctor. I know the FAA site says you can carry on syringes, but some of the airline sites say that you should have a note from your doctor. You'll need some emergency contact info anyway and it's a good idea to have a summary of your care from your doctor (hope you don't need any of this). That way you won't have to worry.
