Next month I may be taking a trip. While on my trip there are some foods that I must buy while there, but some will need to be kept in a cooler for the trip back home. Are there some types of coolers that you can take on an airplane? I would want to check it and not take it as a carry-on if possible. I don't fly very often so I don't know anything about this.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I know that the airlines don't want you to check food, something about the density, and having to hand inspect it, but I don't know it it is not allowed at all. I can't see having a cooler that wouldn't leak at all in the conditions in baggage. We have brought a soft sided cooler carrryon on our trips with some subs and such, and never had a problem.

and your airport.....they would be the ones to answer .......as I have found out ....some airlines and airports are different then others........

Did you ebver think about one of those backpack coolers? I know you said you don't want to carry on, but I think I'd be hesitant to put food in the baggage compartment. There are a lot of temperature extremes there.

I own one of those soft side coolers I pack in my suitcase. Today @ Meijer store they now have soft side coolers on wheels. You could pack it going and take it as a carry-on going home.

my son caught a salmon out in California and had it cut into filets...he froze them, put them in ziplock bags and bought a small cooler, like a Thermos one and used those blue ice things you freeze to put in with in on a flight from CA to the east coast...they checked with airline first to make sure that was ok, as long as it isn't ice that will melt all over the place...and he flew Northwest I believe. They let him do it as a carry on.

We were waiting for a flight and noticed that one plane landing from Alaska had a LOT of coolers on it (I assume loaded with fish as people were carrying off fishing poles).
So some do at least........I'd also check.

Thanks everyone. I asked them today and they said it shouldn't be a problem. WOOT! I'm bringing home some hotdogs!!! :Pinkbounc

Do tell, Chell, what type of hot dogs are worth all of this fuss?

Shalen's

I'll be bringing home a bunch of mustard too.
:hyper:

I have never heard of them, but I bet they are good. I have been known to bring home Hebrew National's before they were available in my local market.

I think I've got a dinner idea!

They are even better than the Hebrew National ones. Our Buffalo area DISers can tell you how good they are. I'm not much of a hot dog fan, but I love these.

Did you have hot dogs for dinner last night?
