Several events have been happening this week, which should lead to the sale of the bankrupt American Airlines to US Airways, any time, now...

Something you should know -- US Airways is the buyer, but its' widely-expected they will eventually assume the American Airlines branding for their entire system.

As for what this means for travelers (besides rearranged flight schedules, I am certain), we'll have to wait for the official announcement from American and US Airways...

This is hard to understand. Isn't US Air and Continental part of United now?

It will take months (or more) for any deal to be approved by the shareholders and by the appropriate government agencies. I'd be surprised if there will be any impact on passengers flying soon.

Continental merged with United. Us Air is going to merge with AA. US Air and United are not merged together.

My Sister works for AA. It is a mess right now!

What alliance will they belong to, then? Oneworld or Staralliance?

US airways was the worst airline I've ever flown in my life, but the bonus miles made up at least part of what I had to put up with.

And if you are flying them soon (AKA in the next year) you aren't going to see ANYTHING

It take a LONG LONG time for this to occur. Just look at the SW purchase of AirTran... it's still two airlines.

An announcement will change nothing on how the two operate. Until they are legally one entity, which takes MONTHS, they can't even share lots of data under anti-trust regulations. Then comes the merger and it takes FOREVER (YEARS) to get them operating as one airline LOL!

US Airways purchased America West Airlines back in 2005, maybe that's what you're thinking?

SW major change with AirTrain will be getting rid of some of the actual airplanes. DH said they are selling AirTran planes (to Delta I believe) and AirTran will begin flying all 737 like SW! That was the last word from the airlines to ATC at least!

My son is stationed at Ft. Hood and AA is the main carrier at the regional airport there. Many many military personnel fly AA. I can't even imagine if they suspend flights, especially from Ft. Hood. The reason we choose to fly him home on AA is they have military rates and should he have to change flights on short notice there is no penalty. The only other closest airport is Austin and flying Southwest, well they don't have military rates.

It's actually becoming increasingly likely the merger will not happen anytime soon. AA's excellent revenue performance lately makes it very clear it's in the best interest of it to emerge from bankruptcy alone, and buy up a much weakened US down the line.

Southwest, like all US airlines, does offer military rates. The problem is, you can always do better with a discount fare. I have been eligible for these fares for more than 30 years, but have never used them because they aren't the best fares.

I don't think you need to worry about AA/US Airways suspending flights to the Ft. Hood area.
