We'll probably be flying Airtran for the first time next summer, June 2012. When can I expect flights to be released for that time period? How much do they charge for luggage? Do they have anything like EBCI or can I pick our seats when I book our flights? Can I get a credit if the ticket price drops? As you can tell by some of my questions, we usually fly Southwest, but Airtran flies out of our local airport and I just can't see driving over 90 minutes to fly Southwest if I can get decent airfare prices through Airtran.

TIA!

Won't Airtran be flying as Southwest by next summer, because of the merger? I'm also looking into Airtran vs SW flights for April. Airtran is more convenient for me, so I'm hoping the merger is complete when we fly...

Southwest has purchased AirTran so I am not totally sure how things will end up. I can tell you how things currently happen.

They do charge for luggage. $25 per bag, I believe. They do not have EBCI as you can purchase seats when you purchase the airfare. If you want to sit next to children, I strongly suggest paying for the seats. We just choose the $6 seats. Yes, you can get a credit if the ticket price drops. We did this and ended up using our credit to pay for our checked baggage. I really liked flying with them. Not sure how much will change now that Southwest owns them.

Scottish McMouse - You've enlightened me. I don't remember hearing about a merger. That may explain why there are more direct flights in/out of our local airport to Orlando starting next spring. If that is the case, and the merger is complete, I'd be totally excited.:cool1::yay::woohoo::cheer2:

Thanks for the info, ccgirl. It will be helpful in the event the merger isn't complete by next summer. I like that I can use any credits to pay for our luggage. :thumbsup2

love those questions...i just booked for feb..and yes when you call they tell u about mergr,,,and when your done booking at bottom of confirmation it shows the merger but says it doesn't effect this trip at all...

I love Air Tran and fly them several times a year to MCO. Unfortunately the Southwest merger is already affecting them here in Dallas. Due to the Wright ammendment Southwest can't fly out of DFW, so they are pulling Air Tran completely out of Dallas as of this Nov 23rd.:sad1:

Luggage fees are $20.00 for the first bag and $25.00 for the second. You can either purchase your seats when you purchase your ticket, go online anytime thereafter and purchase your seat, or wait until the 24 hour mark and go online and pick seats for free. If you must sit together I'd recommend purchasing your seats at the time of purchase. Usually the first two rows in coach are blocked out until 24 hours out. Seats in rows 12-16 are either $15.00 or $13.00 and guarantee you Boarding zone 1 if you purchase them. (If they happen to be empty at the 24 hour mark, you can pick them for free, but will be in the last boarding zone--usually zone 7). Exit rows seats are $20.00. All other coach seats are $6.00. Also at the 24 hour mark you have the opportunity to upgrade to business class. I think it's usually around $50.00 to do so. Those seats also guarantee you Boarding zone 1 and also allow you two free checked bags. If you happen to have enough A+ rewards points you can upgrade to business class for free--it costs 4 Reward Points each way and if using Reward Points you can upgrade by calling at midnight of the day before.

If ticket prices drop, call and they will credit your account. You can use that credit for bag fees or to purchase another flight. Two things to be careful of though: #1. check your flights at least weekly. Air Tran is pretty bad about changing flight times and/or plane sizes. If they change/cancel flights and put you on a different flight, you will probably lose your seat assignments. Just call and they'll reassign your seats. Their customer service is great to work with. If they change your flight times, by just a few minutes and there is another flight with better times, they will switch you to that flight for free, even if it's a more expensive flight or even if it's on a different day or at a different airport. If they change the time and you don't like it, they'll even let you cancel and refund your money without any penalties. #2. they have a bigger allowance as far as carry on size, but their checked bag size is just a tad smaller than most airlines. They do sometimes measure those checked bags, so make sure you are under the maximum size. It's like an inch or two smaller than the industry standard. A carry on can be 24"x18"x13" as long as it is no bigger than 55". A personal item can be 17"x12"x8.5" but must fit underneath the seat. A checked bag must be 61" or smaller (L+W+H), including all wheels, handles and buldges.

As far as prices Air Tran has always easily beaten Southwest prices flying out of Dallas. Of course Southwest flies out of Dallas Lovefield, whereas Air Tran flies out of DFW. We are sooo going to miss Air Tran's cheap flights.:sad2: We paid $148.00 r/t for our flights this past May. I'm having to fly American for my Nov/Dec trip and am paying $277.00. I go to WDW several times a year and I've never had to pay that much for airfare. My airfare this past Dec was $185.00. I can't complain too much though. That $277.00 airfare I snagged on American has been running over $300.00, until American had a sale for a few days a couple of weeks ago. On Southwest, airfare for the same times is $460.00. Southwest has always been alot higher than other airlines out of Dallas though.

I'm actually worried about the merge because from Detroit to Orlando Southwest doesnt have any nonstop flights and Airtran does. I hope we dont lose those!

I thought I read something somewhere that the main change will be the rebranding, and that esentially southwest will just be extending its overall flight network. Hopefully that means that there will now be a direct southwest flight operating out of Detroit once the merger is complete

I was told last year on two different occasions that I could NOT use a fare credit to pay for baggage fees. This really ticks me off if I could have done that, and wasn't allowed to.

On our last trip we flew Airtran and did not pay for reserved seats. Our 4 year old was sitting alone, luckily we found some friendly people to change seats with us both flights. I need to remember to just pay for the reserved seats next time as the flight attendants kind of copped an attitude with us - BOTH FLIGHTS.

That being said, once we were seated smooth flight. Its a great airline, hoping the Southwest Merger will make it better!

I was able to do it this past December, 2010. Not sure if it was a new practice or not as that was the first time I flew them.

Yes, correct. As you found out if you want to sit together (regardless of the age) you need to prepay for your seats. If I book late and the seating configuration does not get us to sit together I book another flight. I do not expect (not saying you did) to have other people move to pacify me. They paid for the specific seats ahead of time (or picked them at the 24 hour mark for free) and shouldn't have to give them up because I did not prepare properly. I think the flight attendants probably get very frustrated as people don't want to pay the seat fee then get mad when they don't sit together.

Airtran is great:) I have used them many many times:) I do select our seats as we want all to be together. Next year at this time we will use Airtran as well and I can't wait until they get the schedules out so I can pick our seats and make our ressies...

That's odd. Not sure why you had problems. I fly Air Tran several times a year and have never had a problem using my credits to pay for either more expensive seats or bag fees.:confused3

Not saying you did, but every single flight I've flown with Air Tran the last year or so, I've seen some parent at the boarding gate raising heck with the rep, demanding that they move people around so they can sit with their kids. The scenario is always the same with the parent saying they didn't purchase seats, because they assumed Air Tran would not separate a kid from a parent, so didn't think they needed to. The response is always the same: 'we did not separate you from your child, you did when you chose not to pay for seats together. We can not/will not ask others to move to accommodate you, but you can ask people when you get on the plane". Then when they get on, they give the FA heck demanding that they force people to move for them. Again not happening. You can't help but feel the FA's get tired of it. I always feel sorry for them.

Was just thinking about this. I believe when I called to ask they said I could not pre-pay that I would have to do it at the airport when we were checking in. I could not do it online. The customer service person at the airport was super nice and did it no problem.

DH and I always pay for the reserved seat (it's only around $6 or $7). If your seat is considered zone 1, you board earliest (after business class). I like that it's cheaper than having to pay $10 for the Southwest ECBI which I hate doing.

On our last trip, we each had our own carry-on (including the four kids) to avoid the baggage fees.

I've actually come to prefer AirTran over Southwest since Southwest added the early bird check-in fee. I also have been lucky to find AirTran flights at least $30 cheaper than Southwest.

Anyone know when AirTran will release June dates? I can't wait to book our May 30-June 8 trip!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks! :goodvibes

Looks like you might have to wait a while. AirTran is now following Southwest's lead as far as when flight schedules are available and from SW website:

We are currently accepting air reservations through March 9, 2012. On September 5, we will open our schedule for sale through April 9, 2012. This date is subject to change! Please check back frequently.

I HATE that Airtran was sold to Southwest. I'll be looking for a new carrier when I can no longer book Airtran. I like to upgrade to Business and Southwest doesn't have a Business Class. So even if I have to pay more, as long as it's a direct flight and I can upgrade I'll willing do it.
