Fly or Drive? What To Do?

How can you possible say something like that? If you change your life, it means they won? Yes partily the reason why I am consider driving is because of what has happened. I have only flown once since 9/11 and was scared to death. I was so scared when the plane landed in MCO and back home BWI I literally ran off the plane. People were looking at me like I was going crazy. DH was like slow down and I was like no way I want off this plane now! Even the pilot was like relax we're here now. LOL. Im sorry but to say that the terriost won isnt right. You can never go on a plane and expect 100% safety because guess what. These days there isnt 100% safety. So I like to be prepared and wanna be safe. Everyone needs to feel that way. My sisters hubby wont even place 1 finger or toe on a plane. He says if something goes wrong with the plane he cant pull over and fix it. But at least with a car, if its something that can be easily fixed, he can fix it, being hes a mechanic. And you cant go by some book. Everyone keeps thinking the next possible attacks are gonna be somewhere other then a plane. Well guess what? So far all other possible attacks have been on a plane, well attempt to be on a plane. At least with driving I have nothing to worry about. Sure you could get into an accident, but me and DH have been on so many road trips to VA, TN, PA, and SC that getting into an accident is the farthest thing on our minds. But possibly getting blown up into a million pieces is something Im constantly worried about during the whole plane ride. I mean last time I rode on a plane I was looking at EVERYONE. If someone got up, I looked at them and constantly stared at them until they sat back down again. You can never be to safe. Its like the expression: better be safe then sorry. And these days your butt on the ground seems to be the safest place to be. Last time I was on a plane this how bad I was. I was flying on USAIR which happens to be my fav. airline and they wanted to put me and DH in row 13. I was like hell no. You better put me in another row. I dont care what row, just not 13. The ticket lady laughed and said a lil superstitous, and I was like yes I am and Im not afraid to admit that. A black cat can walk across my path all it wants, but as for the #13, forget it.

For some of you, the terrorist won.....

If you change your life, that may be the right decision, but no matter what it means they won. They forced you to live in fear of them, that gives them the power.

Personally, I think that the next attack won't be on an airplane. I was re-reading Tom Clancy's novel this weekend where the terrorists attack the shoppers in suburban malls, it's not that far fetched......

Yeap we're in the same boat as u. 2 hrs to get to the airport, arrive 2 hrs before flight, 2 hr flight, and then another 1 hr to 1 1/2 before we get to our resort because we would be taking ME, plus getting our luggage (sorry not trusting other ppl with our luggage), taking bathroom break and it takes about another 10 mins just to get to the other side of the airport just to get to ME.

we're likely driving, but it has nothing to do with what happened this week. As of today, it's more than twice as expensive to fly than it was last year. Unless something changes with that, we will drive.

our drive is 13 hours. if we fly, we're looking at approx. 6 hours of travel time (2 hours to get to the airport, 2 hour flight, arrive at the airport 2 hours early) and then it's another hour from the time we land (getting off the plane, stopping for a potty break, picking up our bags, and driving to WDW). So 7 hours total from the time we leave our house until we reach WDW. So, driving 13 hours isn't much worse, LOL.

I'd much rather fly... no doubt about it.

For me the choice will ALWAYS be FLY, FLY, FLY!!!! Let's see....leave the house at 3:45 PM and I'm in my room at SSR by 9:00 PM from Ohio....it's a no-brainer!

Does the SUBWAY in LONDON in ANY way resemble a PLANE???? Do tunnels and bridges in NY in ANY way resemble a PLANE??

Both of those have EITHER been attacked or been targeted by terrorists. For all you know a bridge you drive over every day has been a target.

So NO all the "possible attacks" have not been on a plane... and they won't all be on a plane.

"I said it might be the right decsion for you.
However, I was driving home for Birmingham tonight and saw not ONE but TWO accidents that could easily have been fatal..."

Sorry, but I think that post was a little mean. Why would you say that to people who have chosen to drive?

I didn't think it was mean at all. It's just reality. There are terrible car accidents every day.

For me it can be as little as a 4 or 4.5 hour trip from the DC suburbs to Orlando. That assumes getting to the airport 1.5-2 hours early. And it is such an easy trip by air. Driving is stressful and tiring, and worse when there is bad weather along the way. If necessary I can also fly late in the day, using what would be "down" time anyway after 8pm.

I think people who drive KNOW there are terrible car crashes everyday. Should the drivers come on here and remind people about horrible plane crashes that happen and kill hundreds of people? People know the risks with whatever they choose. I just think when people have decided to drive, someone doesn't need to try to frighten them about the dangers. Obviously, they feel the advantages of driving out-weigh the advantages of flying.

I know I'm a certified "driver" and I personally just didn't appreciate that post.

Thats true there has been attacks at these places but guess what the terriosts keep going back to? Planes, planes, and planes. And as for any bridges, I dont cross any bridges. The only bridge I cross is an hr away from me and its only if Im heading to the airport or going to go see my Uncle and Aunt on Xmas eve. And somehow I doubt the bay bridge in MD would be a target. They would be targeting more like the bridge in CA and NY and probably The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel that connects MD and VA.

Many posts quickly -

If we give in to our fears that lets them (however them is) win. Thats just the way it is

There was never any threat to DOMESTIC aviation, just international.

Is leaving your shampoo and pepsi behind that much of a hassle in terms of safety. We are all giving in to fear and thats somewhat normal.

As said statistically you have a higher chance of being injured or killed while driving. Now if driving is less time than driving to airport, waiting, flying, etc then it may be worth it.

Final decision is yours and yours alone. Make a smart one. Be safe.

Let me get this straight, it's OK for folks to post that flying presents danger but NOT driving :rotfl2: Why wasn't it mean for them to point out that they think flying has dangers????

I was NOT trying to be mean I was pointing out a FACT. There is RISK in any transport method. Even the beamming on Star Trek had risks. The only way to avoid that risk is to lock yourself in your home.

I fl

And as to "it's only planes" Nope, it's only planes that get MEDIA attention.

exactly.

my husband works on a federal property on the Ohio River. Believe me, they are well aware of the risks and threats to the major waterways in this country. You don't really hear much about that on the news.... and you won't, until something happens.

We're scheduled to fly to WDW next week. While my DH has no problem with flying, my oldest DS is always anxious and nervous about flying, even when nothing out of the ordinary is going on. I'm tossing around the idea of cancelling our flights to leave a day early and drive down. We've never driven that far before (longest one-way drive has been about 725 miles -this would be about 1050).

I'm not looking forward to making the drive - we would do it in two days, probably leaving around noon the first day, stopping about halfway for the night, and then arriving the next day (probably 10-12 hours first day, and then about 10 the next). On the other hand, I'm afraid my DS will be so nervous that he won't be able to enjoy himself while in WDW (he'll be too worried thinking about the flight back). I have to admit that I'm not all that comfortable with the idea of flying right now either (makes me wonder if there are more people out there who are still trying to fulfill those horrible plans...)

What do you think?

I'm taking my DM86 with me this time and we're flying. Her comment was, why did I waste my money buying a carryon? I guess maybe that's why I'm not concerned that much either. I know it's been said before but, if it's meant to be it's meant to be and that has always been my feeling about flying.

Has anyone on the east coast thought of using the Auto Train. I used it last year to take my daughter and younger cousin. I am an early planner so I did get a great rate. Much cheaper than flying (which I detest, nothing to do with 9/11 I just do not like it). We had a great time on the train. Sleeping can be a little cramped (Coach sitting) but it is only for one night and you get to Orlando early enough to enjoy the first day.

Good luck whatever decision you make! :thumbsup2

MsMulan,

We are also considering the autotrain. Unfortunately, since we are supposed to leave next week, the train fares are a lot higher than our airfare (I am thinking of cancelling our flight and possibly driving or taking the autotrain). Has anyone slept in one of the "roomettes"?

Yes, twice. We had a great time in them. My son was thrilled with the experience.

Just heard another "not a plane" terrorist alert. Cities in India have been targeted. (And before you think that doesn't effect me, why not. What if the TV had said "cities in Alabama"?)

It doesnt matter if its International or not. Its the fact that it affects all airlines in all countries. Theres a target somewhere and how do you know that the day you decide to hop on that plane, it maybe your last day on earth. Just because this past time it was International doesnt mean that the next time it wont be in the US. Just my personal opinion I think that the safest way to travel right now is by car. Sure theres a chance of an accident, but it doesnt mean its gonna be fetal or you even have one. Not to mention you could get into accident in your own neighborhood or 5 mins from ur house. You could get into accident on your way to the airport. I just think at this point of time flying can be a dangerous thing to do until things settle down once again like it was back 2 or 3 yrs ago. When I flew last time, nothing was going on. No attacks, everything was calm and fine at the airports. And now because some stupid-head decided he wanted to blow up something, everything is hectic all over again. Yes even though I may have always had good flights, but theres always that 1st time. Just remember this, theres a 1st time for everything.

I'd rather have a pepsi in hand and take my chances driving than go through all of that crap at an airport. The idea of rebuying the liquid essentials upon arrival to the destination is a hassle and unneeded expense. Just leave the left lane on I 75 open for me. :moped:
