Flushable Cat Litter-best brand?

After much research with litter boxes & litter, we have decided to switch to flushable cat litter.

We currently use regular clay clumping litter in a Littermaid Deluxe for our two cats & neither I, nor the cats, are thrilled with it. They hate the noise & the rake.

We are moving to a much larger apartment in two weeks & I am planning to get 2 new litter boxes for my girls. Our landlord only allows one trash bag/week for trash removal so I was going to purchase a litter locker, but I am trying to find the most affordable & efficient system.

I have been reading very positive reviews about flushable litter. This would be a great option for me because I would love to be able to flush it, rather than using a litter locker. Also, it looks similar in texture to regular clumping litter, so it wouldnt be too much of a shock to them.

What is the best brand of flushable cat litter & which brands should I stay away from? I've also read that one downside if it can be really dusty. We plan to keep one litter box in the bathroom. What should I put under the litter box to help avoid tracking & excess dust being trampled around the house? Would just a regular little rug piece work?

Thanks!

I use Tidy cat when I did flush. Now I use Special Kitty and some kind of Nature something 4o lb for $10.00.
Then my gf flushed one night a week ago and lump hung up in the curve of the toilet in a clump.
Normal clump, but this time it got stuck. The plumber wanted $$$$ so she is waiting for SIL to come home from vacation and having to avoid telling DH for now. It is the dowstairs bath by the laundry room.

we tried to plunge and some water goes around it slow, but it must be like cement in there :lmao:

Sorry not funny, But, I put in trash....5 cats! I take about a 5 lb bag of flour size out a day.
I was only flushing poop as I smelled it. They never seem to cover it good.
Good luck

We've used World's Best for several yrs
http://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/

The only place I have found it is at Petsmart. Although that is the only pet store I have looked at. The rest have been places like Walmart or the grocery store.

I've tried a couple of others on occasion but keep going back. For a short time Walmart had something unscented and flushable but they stopped carrying it after a few months.

ETA: now that I've actually looked at the pics on the link I posted: I believe the litter at Walmart was the grocery store packaging for Worlds Best.

OK jsut checked their retail locator and it says my local Kroger carries it. I bet I was looking for the other packaging and missed it. Stil it is probably a lot cheaper at PetSmart, but at least I know where I can go nearby instead of driving 18 miles.

I'm not sure if its good or not but I know tractor supply sells a few different kinds of flushable cat litter

Offtopic.. 1 bag of trash a week? ahahaha Gosh that would suck for my family.. we put out 5 a week.

I just saw on the retail locator that the local tractor supply carries the worlds best also. Well at least I know we have options other than petsmart now. DH drives by the local Tractor Supply on his way hom from work.

Will have to check out the brands they carry. I don't believe I've ever been in one before.

Well your not missing much ;) Its where I buy my cat's food. We dont have a petsmart and our local pet store wants 2X (25$ for the small bag... :scared1: ) as much for Nutro than Tractor Supply.

Sounds like the place to go when I can't make it to petsmart. tactor Supply is probably 7 miles away ,while Petsmart is 18 miles or so.
I do a lot of shopping in the area where Petsmart is because that is also where the nearest BJ's and Target are.

Best is Scoop Away, but we also have good experiences with Arm & Hammer and with Tidy Cat.

I have heard to unclog a toilet to put a squirt of Dawn dish detergent in the bowl, let it sit a few minutes and flush. I don't know if its the slippery feel to Dawn or not, but it would be worth a try!

I have never heard of flushing litter down the toilet. (I'm a new mommy. lol) We just put ours out in the trash. It hasn't really been a problem. We don't tend to have a lot of trash. But now I'm intrigued. So, you just put it in the toilet and flush, eh? I think I would be worried about it clogging.

It was one of the original selling points of scoopable litter, but the practice quickly fell out of favor when people started having to regularly have their toilets repaired.

I know with the worlds best, they say to leave the clump in the toilet for 10 (or maybe it is 15) min before flushing, and to only do 1 clump at a time. After 15 min or so the clump is completely broken apart.

I may give this a try and hope she likes it. Right now my cat's using Fresh Step - anything else and she refuses to cover it up. Maybe she doesn't like the feel of the litter on her paws.

So you can basically flush any kind of scoopable litter?

I don't believe you can the clay based ones. At least with a septic tank. The world's best is corn based. I also believe you can flush the pap-puuur but not yesterdays news. It has been so long since I used anything other than world's best, that I forget what the others were that I flushed.

We do have some fresh step clumping in the basement that DS bought because he thought it said it could be flushed. However thats what he gets for not wearing his glasses. The fresh step says do not flush. He had already opened it when I read the bag. We have it sealed up in a plastic container to use to soak up grease spills etc.

Okay, I'd have to be getting around that "one bag a week" thing. No way I could have done that. Who only has one bag of trash for a family? Even a single person could easily go over that limit.

I didn't even know flushable litter existed. I am temporarily housing a cat and got the disposable litter boxes. I also got "Fresh Step" litter, because I thought, "Well, fresh is good." No idea what the best litter is, much less flushable.

Good luck!

We have less than a bag of trash a week for the two of us (and our cat) because we recycle mostly everything. So, in some places that require recycling, composting, etc. this could easily be achieved.

Not with diapers ;) I wont do cloth til they are older.. no way am I gonna keep up with at least 12 diapers a day... We recycle but still there is no way we could get it to 1 bag a week as a family of almost 6...

Oh and No you can't flush any type of litter I'm pretty sure the clay ones would stop up your toilet BADLY!! :scared:

But you likely don't live in an apartment with a 6 member family, right? Wasn't the poster with the 1-bag limit in an apartment?
