Flu Shot

I got the Moderna booster last evening. I thought I came through with only a sore arm when I woke up, went out to the grocery store, and came back overwhelmingly tired. Just a sore arm with the 1st, and was so sick with osteomyelitis when I got the 2nd that I don't know how the 2nd affected me

I have mine on the 26th, usually I get a bit of a sore arm for a couple of days and feel a little bit under the weather.

So here's my update at almost 48 hours post booster

Same god awful side effects from before with the intense nausea being the worst. I think I was up every 30-45mins this time the first night whereas last time it was every hour. Yesterday I think I was asleep more than awake lol. I slept much better last night only waking up once.

I was able to take ibuprofen yesterday after the nausea had subsided. My fever comes and goes but at this point is more gone than around. I didn't have a fever when I went to bed last night but in the wee hours of the morning had about a 100 or so (normal temp on my thermometer for me is about 97.9-to just above 98)

I also did get the swollen lymph node again and at the moment that's the most that is hurting other than a slight twinge still in my arm. IIRC the pain in the lymph node went away in a few days but last time it stayed swollen for about 8-9 weeks.

I'd say the only real major difference between dose #2 and this booster is the congestion. I feel like last time it felt so much more like a flu in that respects and it was very very mild in that respects this time. I don't know if it's because my body recognized the vaccine better or the time of the year (fall vs spring) matters when it comes to already having allergies.

I told my husband I honestly don't know if I'll have the strength to another booster, he wondered if I would do better with a non-mRNA one. That will be a cross the bridge when it comes to it type scenario.

Right now I'm at the "I'm just so weak" stage which should improve.

For my husband darn the man he barely had anything. His was milder than dose #2. He didn't get a fever this time. He had some aches and a little bit of chills but was less than last time and he did have a headache. His arm did hurt but not too too bad. His main gripe was actually him tweaking his back a day prior to getting the booster with his golf simulator lol. But he also thinks that might have helped divert attention away from feeling more.

We've both updated our v-safe accounts and are filling out the questionnaires as they come in. I've also updated my electronic vaccine card (with gogetvaxed//vaxyes). In the event future boosters are needed both my husband and I will need another CDC vaccine card. They barely were able to get the booster information in there.

Isn't it crazy how different it can be? Sorry you got the worst of it. The good news is that it will hopefully diminish quickly now. At least mine did.

Which ones did you get?

I'm quite thrilled to have sent my daughter back to campus last night 9 days post booster. I'll relax more about her working out in the public, and being on campus with 30K of her classmates.

Thank you :flower3: Last time it was about 6 days total with about half being still awful side effects and half just being the large fatigue. I'd love for it to be less time so here's hoping! I do feel like I'm feeling less zombie-like 1 day earlier than last time lol.

We ended up sticking with Pfizer.

Oh I bet you are relieved especially with this time of year with her getting it, if I were in her shoes I'd feel a lot better myself, like a load off her shoulders.

Six days? That's awful. Here's hoping this is done sooner.

I had all 3 Moderna. Mine was so bad my husband tried Pfizer for his booster but he was still pretty sick. I wish I understood why people have such different experiences with this!

As an aside, we visited Don Chilitos a week ago Saturday. One day after her booster. Dang that place was crazy! I instantly regretted it since so many people were crammed in the long slow moving line (99% maskless). Thankfully we're 9 days later now and came through our farewell visit unscathed.

I wish I did too. And we ate a good meal before, we drank the recommended amount of water (and then some) before our appointment. Maybe it helped him more than it helped me 🤷‍♀️

I think that's why my husband was suggesting a non-mRNA one just because of how the two we have work with the body. I haven't heard about mixing the other way where someone had Pfizer or Moderna and went with J&J for a booster, I've only heard the opposite where someone with J&J first and then was suggest to get their other one with Pfizer or Moderna. My husband was talking about if one of the vaccines not currently available here ended up being available maybe that would be better at least on the side effect part. I'd like to see what the data could be on that as time goes on. Hard to tell at this point because they aren't sure how long our boosters will last.

Oof yeah I'm still a bit iffy about being around a ton of people. I'm so much more aware of my space these days lol. I can imagine how busy it would be with them closing. I see masks a lot more in stores than restaurants these days. Glad nothing came out of the farewell visit!

If you go back the next time, it may not help but I would eat "nausea" food (aka non-inflammatory) for the 24 hours before and after you get a booster (think roast chicken, bananas, apples, rice, brothy soups, etc - nothing fried, no dairy, no red meats, no processed, etc) and I would take an ibu right after the booster and every 6 hours after for the 1st 24-48. Getting "95% or so" of the booster protection (by tamping down your overall immune response) to try to avoid a lot of post-booster symptoms will keep you getting them in the future and would be more worthwhile than 100% protection just letting it go gets (b/c you're starting to find that not worth the symptom hassle)...

I def did try to eat more of those things. Our appointments were at 10am. I had bananas and avocado with toast also after about 2 hours after (which do NOT make for a pleasant experience coming back up :crazy2:). What I read though was that honestly for the most part what you eat right before isn't going to make much of an impact (read that after we got the booster of course). It's a long-term anti-inflammatory diet that would do one better but there's not been actual studies on that whether that has much of an impact on these vaccines. My husband and I eat virtually the same stuff, the perplexing part of how different people experience side effects.

Hydration was seen as the best thing. I did drink water throughout the day slowly. I'm not sure if I could have done a broth or soup though I could see that potentially helping.

The nausea hit around dinner time (right as our dinner arrived from doordash sadly so in the fridge my dinner went) with it lasting until I woke up yesterday about 7am. After that it wasn't really there. Yesterday I had couple of applesauce (throughout the day) and a banana though. Early this morning I had some applesauce when I took some ibuprofen after my fever coming slightly back.

Unfortunately I cannot tolerate ibuprofen once the nausea kicks in. It will make me sick, it's how I've always been (which sucked when I used to get nausea a lot due to menstrual cramps). So I could have taken ibuprofen right after but once that nausea kicks in..

I really appreciate the information :)

The ibu from the get go may help the nausea never arrive, or arrive in reduced form...the nausea is partly coming as a result of your immune system in overdrive since you aren't actually sick, so if you can keep your immune system from getting to that state, you can keep the nausea reduced...

Kinda like trying to stop a migraine from the get go, so it doesn't get to the point of nausea/vomiting - same idea.

So, even if you feel fine at the moment after the shot, take a full dose of ibu, and stay on full dosing those 1st hours...

Maybe it still won't help, but it might...and what have you got to lose:)...
