Flu - anyone worried how it will affect vacation

Anyone else concerned about the flu and any impact on their upcoming trips?

No more so than I worry about planes falling out of the sky or lightning strikes, or a meteor hitting me.

The Swine flu (H1N1), which is what I assume you are talking about, hasn't really made it out of Mexico. As of this morning (9am 26 April) the number of cases being tracked is 20. (TX=2, OH=1, NY=8, KS=2, CA=7)

If you want to follow it the MMWR is a great place to do it. It's an official publication of the CDC. The CDC also has a Swine Flu (H1N1) resource page.

ps. I may be an engineer but my dad is a PHS officer, the MMWR was light coffee table reading where I grew up.

The engineer that I live with was knocked on his *** - hard- a couple of weeks ago by what I assume was the flu. It was his first time in 20+ years of working that he missed consecutive days of work. He didn't even miss more than a few hours when he had a kidney stone.
Our Dept. of Health just released a story a week ago about a small outbreak of anti-viral resistant flu in the state.
And, it creeps me out that the pandemic flu of 1918 first U.S. cases were in Kansas and New York - two of the four states that are reporting it this time.
I don't even have anti bacteria wipes in the house because I'm not that type of worrier (we even keep our shoes on in this house ;))...but this time, I am worried about my family or friends that are travelling with us getting sick.

Same here. The hurt like a ***** but once you pass them you are fine. I'm always a little tired afterwards.

Yep sounds like H1N1. Read the links, it's showing signs of resistance, but Anit-Virals drugs aren't anywhere near as good as Antibiotics. On top of that drug resistance has very little to do with your immune system. The drugs are targeted, your body basically codes against the virus (which is why flu shots work, if you aren't sick yet.)

My worry is that airlines are going to be watching for signs of flu (like the cruise lines) and if you have some signs of illness you'll be denied boarding. We leave next Sunday so I need to stay healthy this week! Yes, I'm concerned about the flu because I don't live in a bubble. I take public transportation in and out of Wash. DC and public transportation is germ city! Since we have CNN on all day, every day, at work, it makes me more aware of everything. It's not like I can turn it off.

VERY WORRIED!

We leave on a Disney Cruise booked with points for 2 cabins in less than 2 weeks and our ship will visit Mexico the week prior to our cruise. How many of the crew will be exposed to the virus then?? :scared:

As of yesterday, the CDC says...

To date, there have been no reported cases of influenza-like-illness in the resort areas along the coast of Mexico.

While tracking N1H1 is very important. Right now it's more media, and less science. Epidemiology

Take the precautions, carry some hand sanitizer with you, and avoid rubbing your nose and eyes. And enjoy your trip.

exactly how I feel.

Actually, the NYC confirmed cases are said to have contracted the disease on spring break in Cancun.

Can you send me a reference to this information?

Because it's been confirmed it's H1N1, but no where does it say they have confirmed they contracted it in Cancun (which are different things.)

Actually, and I have nothing to back this up, but I thought they were on a mission trip, which would certainly not be the same thing as a week on the beach in Cancun.

My kids and I had one of the worst cases of flu that I've had when we stayed in Feb of last year. All I can say is thank God I was in Disney! Seriously, if I'm going to be sick, I'd rather be held up at AKV blinking at giraffes out my door at 2am than at home staring at the ceiling.

What I can see happening with this flu is a reduction in the numbers of people visiting the US. (like we need that now, huh?) It won't be as bad as 2001/2 but there will be a reduction for some time.

We're not changing plans.

Well, we have a 6yo DS with breathing issues (he has CF) and we are supposed to leave for florida in 3 weeks. I'm definitely concerned. I'm not sure what worries me more--the plane/airport or WDW. A flu like that is very dangerous for him.

I agree that people shouldn't panic. And there is no need yet to alter your regular life (my hubby just left for the week for business). BUT, in my mind there is a difference between doing your regular routine (school/work) and taking a vacation. I'm not willing to take as many risks just to take a vacation. I realize we have a special needs son so that alters my view some, but I couldn't enjoy a vacation much if I felt I had to carry around antibacterial wipes and masks in my holster ;)

We're watching closely--no decisions yet. But I am going to call and ask about holding points today :)

Doing a land/sea in Nov....gotta admit....I started worrying about being on a ship with "supergerms"

About a dozen students from St. Francis Preparatory school apparently brought back the virus after spending a week in Cancun for spring break.

This seems to be editorializing by the writer. Until the CDC says what the source is I would stay away from saying it came from Cancun.

Here's MSNBC:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30398682/
"Students began falling ill after a group of friends returned April 19 from Mexico, where they spent six days lounging around the beach and pool during the day and hanging out in Cancun at night.

Esti Lamonaca, an 18-year-old senior who made the Cancun trip, could hardly speak Sunday because her voice was so hoarse. She spent several days battling a fever of nearly 103 (39.5 Celsius) and was wearing a mask to prevent the virus from spreading. "

With our luck we will probably get it.

Every time we go to WDW we come home with some kind of bug. A year ago Christmas my MIL went with us to WDW and ended up in the hospital for 30 days when we got home. The year before that on day 12 of our WDW stay, we ended up in Celebration Hospital with sever flu like systems.

Being exposed to so many people from so many places when going to WDW, I can see how it's easy to pick something up. :sad2:
