Flu - anyone worried how it will affect vacation

We just got back from the BWV's and one of the girls had to go to the clinic last week, she had a fever, throwing up, sore throat and a cough. I got sick on Wed and I still am sick now just waiting on the Dr to call back to go in and get checked out, don't think its this flu going around but you never know.

Can you send me a reference to this information?

Because it's been confirmed it's H1N1, but no where does it say they have confirmed they contracted it in Cancun (which are different things.)

johno

It was reported on the news segment this morning on the Today Show. Now of course THEY call it the common name of Swine Flu and do not refer to it as your H1N1. But they did indeed clarify that it was started in NY by students returning from MX over spring break. They have closed the school because it is so contgagious.

We go to WDW over Memorial Day weekend so I am monitoring the situation as it appears to be getting more serious by the day. I am planning to definitely pack the purse size hand sanitizer as we will be in contact with SO MANY more people than normal. Waiting in lines...crowded buses... Hummmm....wonder if there will be a "run" on masks at Home Depot?!:rolleyes1

We are still going :) I'm taking hand sanatizer and hoping and praying for health and the best ;) In September when we went, my oldest DS (the same week we got home) became very very ill with a strep infection. His neck was swollen 4" (lymph node) on his left side and he was in the ID unit at the childrens hospital for a whole week on high dose IV antibiotics. It was horrible!

Just heard a press conference by the acting CDC Director. They are urging a travel advisroy for Mexico as a precaution. The State Department is expected to follow suit and issue the advisory. I wonder how it will affect the cruise lines.

I am not germ-phobic by any stretch but when I read this post, my first thought was "chalk another one up in the 'rent a car' column!!"

;)

My sister says her biggest memory of Disney as a child is my dad telling her not to touch the hand rails. :lmao:

We're going back to WDW in three weeks, and I plan to take about the same precautions I did when I was a little worried about the Norwalk virus in January. Hand sanitizer when I thought about it, initial bleach wipes for the room, hand washing regularly. None of us got sick then, and I hope none of us will get sick on our next trip.

I'm trying to be aware, but not particularly paranoid.

A formal announcement is to be made this afternoon recommending only ESSENTIAL air travel into Mexico. I don't know exactly if this means this is voluntary or mandatory.

Hm. Good point. Renting a car can come in handy in two ways:

1) avoid busses.
2) avoid PLANES! (and not worry about your own car on the road)

I'm not canceling my plane reservations yet though - Disney is just too far for me to drive it alone even with kids to keep me awake. This flu would have to reach winter-like proportions for me to consider that.

If I do, I'll have to stretch my vacation out by 2 days on each end & not sure how happy my company would be about that.

As of now, no, I'm not worried. In fact, I went to my HS reunion at St. Francis Prep on Saturday. I know it kept a bunch of people away, but we had a good turn out anyway.

I think it will be voluntary. I don't think they actually have the authority to make it mandatory.

But I'd sure listen to their advice. From some of the news reports, they seem a little unsure why cases in the US seem to be much more mild than the ones in Mexico. We'll probably hear 100 theories with no basis in fact before CDC figures it out.

About a dozen students from St. Francis Preparatory school apparently brought back the virus after spending a week in Cancun for spring break.

This seems to be editorializing by the writer. Until the CDC says what the source is I would stay away from saying it came from Cancun.

Hmmm, CDC reports after the fact. I think everyone should use their own judgment, but anecdotal evidence is pretty good.

I'm very worried about the plane trip. We live right on the Mexican border, and lots of people come over the border, then hop on a plane here in Harlingen/South Padre Island. And DH and I have learned that planes are terrible for spreading disease. Other than that, we're not worried nor planning to do anything more than the normal in WDW. In a way, I wish we were driving, but 1350 miles just isn't a "doable" drive when DH has a week for vacation.

My DMIL and her DH flew out to Cancun on Sat. morning:scared1:
The real scary thing is that they are scheduled to fly home this Sat. and be at my house on Sunday for my DD birthday party.:scared1::eek::scared1::eek::scared1::scared1:

Don't get me wrong, I love them but, I don't want them at my house one day after being in Mexico.

I am going to ask them to stay home:headache:

Am I overreacting or am I justified in my concerns for my family's health?

Overreacting. Unless they are headed there to work on a farm, or they are for some reason immunosuppressed.

While the CDC has said "U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico." I wouldn't worry. I wouldn't hesitate to leave today for Cancun, if I could.

DVCJones, I recommend you sneak in a call to your doc office and ask what they would do. ;) I'm betting there is less than .001% chance they caught anything, never mind the Swine Flu, but it's just nice to have the opinion of a professional behind you.

Hope your party goes well!

My son won a 5 day trip to Cancun through work...they are to leave next Tuesday!:scared1: I am sooo hoping his company cancels the trip!! My 25 yo son's comments " That won't happen to me"......:sad2: Just no talkin to kids!

They will just have to understand....this is a national crisis, not just like you don't want them over for the heck of it......

My plan is not to panic. There are what, 48 known cases in the US? How many millions of people live here now? The snowball's chance in the proverbial "heck" is about any normally healthy person's chance of catching this. Just following normal handwashing and common sense practices is about all I will do. I must admit the plane ride bothers me with any kind of illness issues, but I also have to get there, so I'll take the chance.

I also think anyone who is smart enough to look for the symptoms is also smart enough to get to a hospital or doctor and get the Tamiflu meds (which is supposed to be quite effective for this strain).

Well it was bound to happen. Sooner than I expected though, I saw on WFTV web site http://www.wftv.com/news/19311020/detail.html that a tourist from Mexico to Disney has been confirmed to have a case of swine flu. They are checking to see what parks he had visited and when.

Sounds like they are awaiting confirmation from the Florida Public Health Department.

Of course we are heading down there Monday! Time to get the masks out? :confused3
