We're driving to the World next weekend and I'm curious about how much the toll rates are in Florida if you pay cash. I went to the Sunpass website and I'm not sure I'm getting correct information. Every location I came up with in the Orlando area lists a cash price of 75 cents. That seems really low to me. I grew up in the Chicago area and still drive through there frequently and it's at least 2 or 3 times that amount to pay cash for tolls there. I own an Ipass toll transponder to handle tolls in this part of the country, but it's not compatible with the Sunpass sytem unfortunately. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Cash tolls in Florida are mostly in the 75 cent to 1.25 range each but you will go through several toll plazas depending on your route.

Sunpass offers some commuter (frequent user) discounts.

Many of the Florida toll plazas require that you go down what looks like an exit ramp to pay cash if you don't have a Florida transponder. (Some other states have some plazas like that too.)

Some states in the EZ Pass system (east of the Mississippi River and north of the Carolinas) offer discounts at their plazas sometimes as great as 25 percent for the EZ Pass compared with cash tolls, even for occasional users. Some of the states offer the discount only to subscribers who got the transponder from that state.

Thanks for the information. I thought about getting a Sunpass transponder but we wouldn't use it enough to make it worth it.

If your plan is to travel to Orlando via Florida's Turnpike, you'll encounter these cash tolls:

Turnpike mainline toll plaza near Leesburg: $3.00

If you continue on the Turnpike to I-4, there is an exit ramp toll at I-4 of $.75.
If instead you leave the Turnpike at Exit 267A and take TOLL 429 south, there is no additional toll on the Turnpike but you'll pay $1.50 on the 429.

These toll plazas are staffed 24/7 and can give change if you need it.

Thank you King Bob. That info really helps. I'll just make sure I have some singles and quarters ready so I can pay exact change, as I imagine those lines will be less.

When I rented a car from Dollar last month they were trying to scare me into buying their inclusive toll pass, saying that many roads are now cashless. If we are going from Orlando airport to Disney to Port Canaveral to Universal do I need to get what they are selling??

I would like to know the answer to this as well:). We are doing the same route.

No, there are no cashless tolls where you are driving.

Will you be spending time driving on toll roads during your Florida visit? Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is making some changes to its toll plazas. Here’s what you need to know:

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise began what eventually will become a statewide conversion of turnpike toll plazas from traditional cash collection to all-electronic open road tolling. The project began with the southern 47 miles of Florida’s Turnpike in Miami-Dade County, from Milepost 0 in Florida City north to Milepost 47 at the Miami-Dade/Broward County line. This portion has been completed as or February 2011. During construction, turnpike drivers may see lane closures statewide. Construction on other turnpike portions will begin in 2012. For details, visit www.FloridasTurnpike.com. You can also watch this video explaining the new system and expected completion dates.

Drivers on all toll roads in Florida will see signs at toll plazas about all-electronic open road tolling. This new system eliminates the need for drivers to stop at toll plazas. Cash collection booths will be removed and replaced with overhead readers and cameras that will scan for SunPass transponders and license plates. The new system is considered safer and more convenient.

For drivers who encounter these new toll plazas in Miami-Dade County and don’t have a SunPass, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has established “Toll-by-Plate.” Cameras over the travel lanes will take an image of the license plates of vehicles without a SunPass. The plate will be matched to the vehicle’s registered owner, and a bill will be sent to the owner for the toll, plus a monthly administrative charge of $2.50. To avoid this charge, drivers are encouraged to contact Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise at 1-888-TAG TOLL (824-8655) and set up a pre-paid Toll-by-Plate account. Interested in buying a SunPass? Call 1-888-865-5352 or visit www.sunpass.com.

Visitors driving rental cars should check with their rental car companies about charging their tolls to their credit cards.

No, you do not need that. You can pay cash.
