I have been looking into some homes with FSVH, and when I asked if the price that they quoted me was everything that I would have to pay, she told me that there would be an additional 300 upon check-in, which is refundable, but it makes me nervous.

In the past I have rented through vrbo, and that stuff is all included in the price they give you.

Has anyone had a problem with this?

In any of the homes we've rented the security deposit has always been separate. We pay the rent which includes taxes and pool heat and when we get there or just before give them an imprint of our credit card for the security deposit. Only once have we paid the security deposit by check and then have it returned 3 weeks after we got home. I think doing it the way you said that they wanted is fairly common.

I think a lot of people confuse the reservation deposit with the security deposit. The reservation deposit is to hold your dates and that's usually collected at the time of booking. You then pay your remaining balance about 45 or 60 days prior to check-in.

The security deposit is to protect the home-owner in case you break something The security deposit is refunded once FSVH inspects the home and sees that nothing is missing or broken.

As others have said, this is very common if not universal. Beach houses alike will collect security deposits too.

I'm a homeowner with FSVH (3 years now) and have never had a customer complaint about their security deposit.

It's unique to the owner, not to VRBO. We're a homeowner in Windsor Hills, and advertise on VRBO, but we don't take a cash based security deposit, we prefer to use a credit card imprint instead, much like hotels do.

Many owners do it this way as well, but the cash deposit method is also very common, nothing unusual about it at all.

Just chiming in to say nothing unusual. Have seen it done both ways. Never had a problem getting it back.
