Florida Non-Residents - Ever Want to Move to FL?

Would LOVE to get those Florida resident rates - but I think the humidity would drive me crazy!

Nothing beats being about to go to the parks just for ice cream or to see a parade.

When I am in the parks it doesn't seem like I live right down the road. It is still magical.

Too hot in the summer months.

And too many old farts on the highways. Oh, wait a minute, I am just a few gas bubbles away from being one of those old farts. Shoot, I will be turning into the driver I always warned my kids about: "If they are wearing a hat, they are too old or too young to be driving, get out of their lane."

I could never live there, because I'd miss winter too much. Sorry, but there is nothing more beautiful then waking up and looking out the window and seeing a fresh coating of pure white snow. Foliage season can't be beat either. And the excitement of a Disney trip would really wear off, because it would be so much more often. Right now we're lucky to even be able to go every other year. That really increases the excitement level, because so much planning goes into it. I'll probably live in New England my whole life, because this is the perfect corner of the world to live in, bad drivers and all.

High temperature and high humidity would keep me away in the summer. And, I would miss my family, so the answer is no.

NO WAY! I like California waaay too much to move to that kind of heat AND humidity! (we get like - 4 slightly humid days all year!)

I wouldn't want to live there year round, but I certainly wouldn't mind being able to be there for Janaury, February, and some of March, and maybe do a couple of quickie trips other times of the year. I also don't think I'd be in central Florida...probably go to the east coast near Vero, as DH has a sister and some other family there.

I have wanted to move to FL since my WDW honeymoon in 1999. I have been to FL several times since, and not just WDW. Ironically, my company moved there and I am still working for them, just from home in NY. I understand the weather is humid, but I would trade that for the chill and snow here in a NY minute. Also, I would not miss the high sales tax and personal income tax. The way I look at it, I think the smart thing to do is make my money here, then spend it in FL. When my house is paid off and the kids are grown, and my DH is retired from the NYPD, I can think about moving. I want to be able to enjoy FL when I move there. My DH is opposed to it right now, since his immediate family is still here. He does have relatives there, though, and their house is gorgeous! I don't think I would move close to Orlando, unless I could see the fireworks from my backyard. Maybe we could summer here, and winter in FL...hmmmm

I'm gonna stick with "its a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there".

I need my pine trees, mountains and winter snow! (not to mention what the humidity does to my hair )

I'd love to live there in the winter, I'm not a big fan of snow and cold (yes I know, I live in the wrong state) but definitely not in the summer. My grandparents moved to FL when I was a kid, so I've visited plenty in the summer. WAY TOO HUMID!! But, I guess that will have to be my dream for retirement unless we can figure out a way to commute kids back and forth to school!

No way. DW wants to retire to FL and I said no. The summers and half of Spring and Fall are unbearable for heat. Hurricanes are always a threat. I would rather stay up north where if it snows, i just don't go out. I can think of nothing worse than living in one of those retirement communities. MIL lives in one and all they do is complain about everything, when they have little to really complain about. The major topic of conversation is which restaurants have the best "early bird specials". YUCK

Plus everyone forgets the bugs, there are a LOT of bugs in Fl. And in the summer you have to cut your lawn several times a week, so you have to get up early to do it because by 9:00 AM it is too hot.

Everyone thinks that because a place is a great place to vacation, it will be a great place to live. I know so many people that sell everything up north, move to FL, and return in a couple of years because they hate it. Definitely not for me. Jay

I am moving there on May 31st! I find it funny when people talk about the weather being too hot and humid. It actually gets hotter and just as humid in Kansas City for at least 2 months of the year. Other than the actual summer months, the weather in Florida is wonderful. Winter weather in the 60's and 70's is my idea of great! I won't miss the ice and snow at all!

I guess it is different if you are worried about the job market and commuting. I retired, so that isn't a concern for me.

Ask me the same question next year. I bet I'll say that I love it!

For the posters that like the winter months

do you really like being held hostage in your own house from November through March?

Or how about taking an extra 15-30 minutes or more to drive 5 miles in snow and ice. How about scrapping the ice off your windows after you get off of work? How about hitting a deep pothole and losing half of your car in it.......

I will gladly take 3 hot months in Florida for 9 beautiful months there. In Ohio we are lucky to see sunshine even in the summer.

I have dreamed of living in Florida since I was a teen ager (too many years ago to admit). I was really into scuba diving, and we went to north Florida (fresh water springs, gulf coast, etc) almost every weekend.

My goal was to become an Oceanographer. That didn't happen though, and I got into the Software Engineering field. Disney is a real enticement, but I really love Spring and Fall. Living here in the Tennessee mountains (God's Country) is really a blessing.

Maybe someday though!

Every day of my life, I wish I lived there. My ultimate goal is to have a palm tree in my back yard. I will get there.

DH and I think about it everyday. We toyed with the idea a few years ago, but didn't think it would ever really happen. All our family is here, but should we give up our dream for that reason, not that it isn't a good reason. Although we love WDW, we wouldn't be moving to FL for that alone. DH loves to garden, and loves to be outside. Here in the Northeast we've had really lousy fall, winter and springs for the last several years. I think this weekend is the first time in four months I've seen the sun. Okay, I might be exaggerating, but that is what it feels like. Plus, we're sick of cold, snow, ice, and living in the most populated state in the union, per square inch. We've been fortunate enough to have gone to WDW at least 3-4 times a year the last several years, and we've spent a bit of time driving around central FL to check things out. We've done research online, etc. We know we want to relocate there. Our youngest, 18, is starting college in the fall, so we really could go as soon as we find jobs. The hard part is that the kids don't want to go with us. Why, for the life of me, I can't understand. They love FL, but don't want to leave "home". Their father and I are divorced, and the middle and youngest live with him, not even five minutes from DH and I, but they freak at the thought of me moving to FL. I keep telling them it is only a 2hr flight away, you would think we were moving to Australia. DD is always out and about anyway with her friends and boyfriend, and once she starts college I'll really never see her, but she says she "needs me, in this transitional stage of her life". Boy, they really know how to get you, don't they? Plus, there is the issue of my mom, a healthy, 70yo widow, who I've been trying to get to move in with me and DH since my dad passed away 7 years ago. She doesn't want to lose her independence, although she doesn't drive, has never worked, and depends on everyone anyway. We'd love for her to come to FL with us, but she says "no way, we'd have to put her away". My brother is planning on moving to FL in 4 years when his son graduates from HS, so all my mom would have would be my sister in the area. So in answer to your question, after my long-winded reply , if DH can get a job in his field, medical sales, based in the Central Orlando area, we are out of here. I figure once we're there, the kids will gravitate there, and if not, we'll be doing frequent traveling back and forth.

I may be in the minority, but agree with the "it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there."

I am a midwestern girl through and through; love the 4 seasons; have a great job and all my family around me here. Would I like my DD or DS to get their careers there? sure, if that's what they want. But just because you move to Florida does not mean its a vacation every day. Bugs, heat, taxes, low pay, high cost of living, etc. just don't excite me. I have a former business collegue that moved to Celebration almost a year ago and he's ecstatic--a dream come true. But I don't envy him at all.
I'd rather see Florida from my resort in WDW or VB with a cold drink in my hand and not a care in the world!!
