A good website to check on current fuel prices in Florida

http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/FLmetro.asp

As in the Uk the fuel prices keep going up with an average price of $2.56 in Orlando today. It has risen by 30 cents just in the last month!

So that SUV upgrade I was toying with might just go out of the window now as a trip to Tampa may severely dent the holiday money!

The way I look at it, the prices are never gonna be as bad as the UK. Look on the bright side, you're saving money on petrol here :)

We drive from New Jersey to Florida (17 hour drive) in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Which we'll be doing October 2nd....Last time I only filled up twice on the way down, so it's not that bad. I always buy my gas in NJ anyway, it's about .40 cheaper a gallon :) In Fl it's much cheaper anyway. Everything is cheaper there (Except in DW) :rolleyes1

I know that is expensive by US standards, but it works out to be about £1.46 a gallon. Puts things in perspective for me, and I can't see how it makes a difference of more than a few pounds over the course of a couple of weeks of normal driving.

We will probably cover about 500 miles in a fortnight. At 20 miles per gallon, you are talking 25 gallons, giving an increase of about $7.50 (unless, as could well be the case, my maths is rubbish!).

We'll still be going with our 7 seater!

We're going with an 8 seater and a compact - does your 500 miles cover back and forth to disney/universal/tampa/kennedy?

I can't rememebr how much we spent on gas last trip although I remember telling everyone we filled the car for about 12 quid!

There's 8 of us travelling so I was trying to work out how much gas might be so we can have a kitty - I've already worked out the parking...

How can you complain about the fuel prices in FL when we have the most expensive fuel in the world? Like Kristie said, put things in perspective. An extra couple of pounds is not going to ruin your vacation spending power.

Clearly the tongue in cheek element was missed by one and all. Main point was that its rising sharply, not that its suddenly rip off britain.

I think, perhaps, the angry face emoticon was what made people think you were complaining about the prices. That was certainly what did it for me anyway.

I'm sure you'll still have a good trip, even if you are paying a little more for your fuel :)

I've just got back from Orlando, and the rising cost of fuel was on just about every news bulletin I saw (local and national). Also, for the first time I've seen on US TV, there seemed to be interest and debate in more fuel efficient cars. Perhaps some moderate fuel price increases aren't such a bad thing?

Regards

Rob

Yes here they are talking about the hybrids... But I literally have seen one... a Honda. Put it this way...
It costs me $45 a week to get to and from work driving. So I figure that when I get to Fl, I won't be driving around, I'm just going to take the free transportation. So it may just work out the same cost .. maybe.
And there are more SUVs here than cars. We're obsessed with the big trucks :)

We don't actually stay in Orlando. but down on the Gulf coast, then drive up and stay a couple of days (we prefer a beach holiday - please don't shoot me!!). The 500 miles takes in back and forth to Orlando, and round trips to malls in Tampa and Sarasota. I can't imagine you will do that much in and around Orlando, but obviously Kennedy is a little further away. Perhaps others may be of more use on that!!

Ah, depends where in the U.S. you are... here in the Washington, D.C. area, the Toyota Prius is popping up like so many weeds... I see them every day.

I wish all of you who are "hopping the pond" a wonderful holiday, despite the cost of fuel!

Don't worry, the fuel costs aren't going to put us off! I was actually working it out the other day for a friend of mine in the States and told him that a US gallon (smaller than a UK gallon apparently) of fuel would cost him the equivalent of $6.30 over here! And prices are quite low where I live - it's nearer $7 based on London prices...

Really? How confusing!!
I only found out about it because it was a question in a pub quiz once - something like "put the following in order of size - a US pint, a UK pint, half a litre". Until then, I didn't realise that there was difference in pint sizes.

In case you're interested, the answer is (largest first): B, C, A

To be more precise (copied from the web):
1 US fluid ounce = 1.0408 UK fl oz = 29.574 millilitres
1 US pint (16 fl oz) = 0.8327 UK pt = 0.4731 litre
1 US gallon = 0.8327 UK gal = 3.7854 litres

Oh man. The whole metric / imperial thing is confusing enough - without all of that! I didn't have a clue that was the case - thank goodness for pub quizzes!
