i have a friend who recently moved to florida. she lost her drivers license in another state because she owes the state money for some sort of fines.
does anyone know if that would prevent her from getting a license in florida? not sure if it carries over to other states or not? :confused3
i realize it will only take a phone call to find out for sure, but it's after hours on friday and monday's a holiday. i'm impatient!! lol

Yep. Pretty much all (if not all) states are linked. If it's been suspended in another state it will show and they won't issue her one.

Yes. The computers are now tied in together. She will have to satisfy the tickets from the other state first. I know of someone who had to satisfy fines in Maine and S. Carolina. He had had a Florida license for 25 yrs and when it was time to renew this last time it had caught up with him.

Why wouldn't it carry over? It's another state, not another country, KWIM?

Pay up! Then she can get her Disney Florida Resident discounts. :hyper:

The un paid ticket from Maine was from the 70's.

Yes - and I'll just add, that as someone who moved to Florida and got a FL drivers license recently, it is a PAIN IN THE BUTT to get a drivers license here! You have to provide about 3x the documentation you do in any other state, it seems like, particularly when it comes to proving residency.

Because of the REAl ID act of 2005 all states are requiring more documentation when you apply for a new license or at renewal.

As far as I know, the new documentation requirements are a one-time thing and after that it should all be on file. You need items such as birth certificate, Social Security card, current utility bill with your address, vehicle registration, marriage certificate for married women to show why the name on your birth certificate doesn't match the rest. They will give you a list of options and your new license will have a small star on it to indicate you are verified. A copy of your DD-214 and a dollar will also get you a V to show you're a veteran. That's for Florida. I don't know what the requirements are in other states. It will not surprise me if we eventually need passports to travel outside our home states.

It's like that in all states. Although I was able to renew and change the address online without a problem (staying in the same state). I finally got my birth certificate out my storage unit, so I can now go to the DMV here in California. I also have to take the written portion of the driving test, which I don't know if that's a California thing or a new thing nation wide.

She is on the NDR - National Driver Registry - it includes all the US, Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands. If she has fines/suspension even non-payment of cild support she has to clear it in the state where fines are. Then get proof of release fron that state. It is not a cheap proposition.
