Stayed in a lovely villa over the past two weeks but the night before we were due to leave the washing machine flooded the whole garage. The garage was carpeted too! I don't think I should be liable for this under the security deposit as it was a mechanical fault. We put it on as always and went to dinner. When we came back it was still going and there was water everywhere. What do you think? I emailed the owner and telephoned the MC to let them know and left a msg but have had no response.

I would give another day or so for a response and then follow it up again. I shouldn't think you would be liable and would assume that the villa owner would have insurance against accidents, however naturally you are not going to relax until you have confirmation of the same. It is good that you sent an email as you have evidence of your communication, complete with date and time sent. This is better than a phone call where the contents of the conversation are one person's word against another.

How long ago did you send the email? Was it immediately after you discovered the damage?

Sounds as if there was a fault -maybe a blocked filter which I wouldn't expect a renter to check to be honest -that to me is a management job.You have done the right thing and told everyone so I hope the owner does right by you and takes the hit -if the damage is bad then maybe they will claim off their insurance but hopefully it will be ok .

I don't think you will be liable at all. As already said they will, in the first instance, have insurance just for this sort of thing. And the deposit is normally to protect the owner from damage to items due to your negligence (e.g dropping a vase or ripping the baize on a pool table).
Most villas we have stayed in have specifically asked us to put in a washing load of towels or bedding on the morning we leave to help the cleaners (which we have never had a problem doing). If you had done this then left for the airport then the same thing could have happened without you knowing anything about it.

Thank you for your responses. I did let them know that evening as soon as I discovered it so fingers crossed.

Poor you! I am sure it will be fine so don't make yourself miserable thinking about it. That is what their insurance is for.
