When I was a lad, I used to love Flipper. I'd race home everyday after school to watch it. To live like Bud and Sandy was every boy's dream.

Well, I just noticed it's now available on Netflix streaming. I've been watching a few episodes...wow...Flipper is really bad!

The production values are so bad.

Flipper is shown is this muddy looking water, then he dives down, and he's suddenly in crystal clear water...and he swims by the same rock every time.

Rick, the dad apparently works for the state or the US Govt as a wildlife officer...yet his boys are allowed to not only ride on the dept boat, but to drive it...and they never wear pfd's.

I think they must have had only two or three bits of film of Flipper which they used every time they showed him.

Episode one features a Coast Guard Helicopter "piloted" by someone wearing a Navy helmet...and the guy did not appear to be pilot material.

Copter goes to pick up Flipper...lands...rotors are turning at high speed according to sound and distant shot. Close up shot shows them loading Flipper into helicopter...when the obvious shadow of the barely turning rotor crosses the screen.

Kind of fun to watch just to look for all the production gaffes.

They call him Flipper, Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightening, no you see, is as cheesy as he....

Poor Flipper. The movies are better. :)

I wish I were young enough not to know what you're talking about!! :rotfl: I loved Flipper too!

I have to say I have found this true of many of the old shows. I loved Dark Shadows when I was a kid and I watched again as an adult and wow, they were so bad!

My DM and I tried to watch That Girl one weekend and once again, wow, was it bad!

There are many shows that have held up over time like Andy Griffith and Lucy, but sadly, it seems they are far and few between.

I really miss the good, clean, comedies like I Love Lucy and the Dick Van **** show!!! Nothing was funnier than Lucy!!!!

In some ways Netflix is not a good thing...I've made my kids watch some shows and movies...after telling them how great they were...only to realize that they really weren't.

The Andy Griffith Show being one of the few exceptions.

Watching Flipper episode where these mines have somehow showed up in the marine park...sure hope Flipper is ok,,,;)

The mine looks like the same one which floated up on Gilligans's Island.

I've found that to be true for many shows I liked as a kid, like Dark Shadows and Here Come the Brides. I was so excited to see them on Netflix, and just shook my head at how bad they were.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..................don't be a Flipper Hater :happytv:

We watched them on Netflix with my DGD and I have to say that DH and I were just way too nostalgic :lmao:DD and DGD tolerated us :rotfl:

Flipper is how I became a huge Miami Dolphins fan. My parents were season ticket holders and they started taking me to games when I was 6 using the fact that "flipper" was swimming behind the goal posts. I would just sit and watch flipper jump the whole game LOL!

For all you dolphin-story fans, brace yourselves for a new generation of dolphin junkies.

A new fictionalized film about Winter (the tail-less orphan dolphin rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium) will be coming out at the end of September. We took my 4 yo to CMA last weekend, and now she is OBSESSED with Winter, and my guess is that she isn't going to be the only one. The movie is called "Dolphin Tale" -- because Winter wears a prosthetic tail to allow her to swim properly without damaging her spine.

This will involve not only the movie, but there is a video game for the DS, a couple of books, and a teacher's study program; it's going to be a big deal for bottlenose dolphin fans: http://www.winterstail.com/

I used to love Flipper!! And Bewitched!!!

Bite your tongue! The original Flipper is a CLASSIC. I was a little girl when that show was on an it turned me on to Florida in a big way. Seeing it now brings back so many good memories from my childhood, cheesiness and all.

Ok...i've watched a few more episodes, and read through all the episode synopsis's's's...

I've made several discoveries

1. Flipper is "Lassie of the Sea"
2. They only have three basic stories...

someone is poaching either coral, sponges, or tropical fish and Flipper discovers them, and leads the guys ( more about them later) to the rescue.

Someone gets trapped in a cave, boat, or Volkswagen beetle under water...and Flipper discovers them, and leads the guys to the rescue. Flipper will most likely butt a shark with his head in the process.

Someone wants flipper for some (mostly nefarious) reason...for gain, or to get rid of him for foiling their plans.

3. Several times during the show the musical style of the theme song changed...from the annoying choir to a Tony Bennett style....

And finally...I'm on to you ladies:teacher:...beefcake...this is why you love Flipper...Porter and the boys will rip off their shirts at the drop of a hat and go swimming. You're not fooling me. :sad2: you should be ashamed...oooogling those young boys...

:rotfl: You're right "Lassie of the Sea!!"

Okay, I barely remember this one....My Mother the Car, oh and The Second Hundred Years. I loved that one, though I don't think it lasted too long. It was a guy who's great-great (maybe another great) grandfather was caught in an avalanche and he came back to life when he thawed out and went to live with his great great grandson, who looked, older than him. (from what I can remember!) At least it was something different than another variation of Lassie!!

Luke Halpin, who played Sandy, still lives in Florida. He looks a lot different now (don't we all). He looks like a gruff old sea captain. He is a friend of one of my friends. They worked together on various productions filmed in Florida over the past 30 years. One of these days, my friend told me he'd let me ride along when he goes down to visit Luke. It will seem very strange. I was a huge Flipper fan!

This is Luke now.
