Flip flops?

It's a vacation! People should wear what they are comfortable wearing, whether that is socks with sandles or flip flops or slippers. For those who care about these things, you'll have fun mocking them, like my dad who wears dark dress socks to the beach.

I finally broke my mom of that habit!! Now if I can only get her to stop wearing socks when she wears shorts with sneakers!! I bought her the little ped type socks but when she puts on the big old socks with shorts she looks crazy LOL!!

My opinion:

For men, flip-flops are fine during the day but are too casual for the dining room. The cost of the flip-flops is not an issue; you might have a very expensive bathing suit, but it's not appropriate for dinner either. For those of you who are into complete comfort, I'd suggest Topsiders or leather boat shoes (thinking casual nights here). My hubbie wears them all the time without socks. For formal nights, if you're wearing a suit, guys, you're pretty much stuck with the dress shoes.

For women, flip-flops run a wide range. Obviously, the plastic wear-to-the-pool type is out. But a pair of dressy leather flip-flops or a pair of colored flip-flops with beads might be just right with a sundress for casual night. Black with rhinestones might do for formal night. And, of course, ladies can get away with just about anything if they're wearing a long dress on formal night. Don't be jealous guys -- we ladies can get away with this one little thing, but our wardrobes are more complicated in general!

I admit I'm one of those that carries a little pair of socks to wear with my Birks. I try not to wear socks with sandals but my toes are always cold so I end up putting on those little ankle socks to wear with my sandals. Oh well.

Is the dress code liberal enough to allow flip flops during dinner?

Obviously not on formal and semi formal nights (7 night cruise), but on casual nights. I'll be wearing linen pants and collared shirts but not having to pack another pair of casual shoes would be nice.

Well, as a big What Not To Wear Fan, I was surprised to see that they feel nice flip flops are very cool and appropriate with casual men's wear. Of course, when i think of flip flops, I think of the cheap ones at Target, and not the Abercrombie ones, so iguess it depends on the flip flop.

Mike, if famous designer, Isacc Mizrahi was on board at the same time as you there would be two trend setters aboard. I say if you feel confident go for it!

I say a man should not have hairy feet exposed at dinner. A tightly woven strapy sandal yes maybe. I vote for the topsiders.

Mike,
It looks as if you have already taken the July 10th cruise. Please tell us what you wore and whether you felt you made the right choice. Did you look at other men and see what the majority of footwear was?

I just can't help it I have to post! I too forgot to pack the "dressy" shoes on our first seven night cruise. After a teary eyed daughter realized that it was okay to wear her little higher heeled flip flops with her formal, she went to dinner and no one was the wiser!!
Homecoming and Jr prom rolled around this year and guess what? DD wore a dressy Candy black flip flop with her formal gowns. She was the most comfortable at the dance, and may just have started a new trend at the high school!
Socks with sandals....daughters always wear them with the Adidas bubble sandals. Again a new trend started.
Honestly though as another poster already stated I can't remember what anyone wears I am so caught up with the beauty of the ship and the lively conversations, I forget to see who had what on.
So I say wear your leather flip flops and have lots of fun, make new friends and enjoy!!

Hi all,
I've been back a month and was surprised to see my flip flop inquiry was still going on.

Yes, I did take them and did end up wearing them for two casual nights one being the tropical night. They were certainly appropriate for the evening and I didn't receive any dirty looks from anyone. Then again, my feet aren't too hairy!!!

The cruise was a blast (see my trip report "random thoughts.....) and you'll get a better idea of how it went. For those who use this board, it's important to stress the big stuff, but don't sweat the small. Enjoy your well earned vacation.

Mike
