flip flops in the park

Jumping into the fray here...

Would like to address a couple of points that have made by both sides. I grew up here in the WDW area, and I have never considered flip flops a "staple", nor have any of my friends. To us, flip flops are something you take on a camping trip to use as shower shoes...or maybe wear from your hotel room to the pool. But they are not footwear to be worn on a regular basis. So they're obviously not a "staple" to everyone in FL.

I personally couldn't wear flip flops to WDW. I have knee problems, and can't even wear my favorite beat-up Converse sneakers to WDW, or else I'm in major pain by the end of the day. So I wear hiking boots or sneakers with lots of support.

I also don't understand the trend of flip flops as dress wear. But I don't understand a lot of trends. I've never been a "trendy" person, I have created my own style that I enjoy, and I tend to stick with it.

But all of that is just MY opinion. Those are the decisions that I have made for myself and my own style. I could care less what everyone else wears, whether to WDW or anywhere else. I can't offer opinions on whether your feet will hurt if you wear flip flops to WDW cause I don't have experience in that area.

I just don't understand the vehement debates that tend to be started by the simplest of questions. Can't we all just get along?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa!!!! I was making light of the "discussional debate" brought forth by someone. I do not wish to be singled out by the comment, "I grew up here in the WDW area, and I have never considered flip flops a 'staple', nor have any of my friends. To us, flip flops are something you take on a camping trip to use as shower shoes...or maybe wear from your hotel room to the pool. But they are not footwear to be worn on a regular basis. I do not recall ever saying they were a staple to EVERYONE. I just mean they are important in this extremely warm and sometimes hot weather. Zip-a-dee-dude-da blasted everyone that wears flip flops by assuming we wear them solely (no pun intended) to be "trendy". I was simply pointing out that flip flops help Floridians (and others in warm climates) keep cool during the heat of the spring and summer months. I am not calling them a stple like corn was a staple to the Native Americans. It was a figure of speech.

By your comments, it appears that you think of people who wear flip flops to places other than camping, the shower, or the pool are beneath you. I do not consider flip flops as trendy or as shoes that the common, poor people wear. Lordy, they are JUST shoes. I feel stupid enough for getting into this debate. My earlier posts were all in fun, but apparently you didn't see it that way. I have never had a bad experienc eon this board, but I can see one coming if I do not bow out of this part of the conversation immediately.

Personally, because I'm only 12, I listen to what my mother says (usually ;) ). She has always told me to wear sneakers in the parks or you will get blisters. Out of the 14 times I've been to WDW, I have worn sneakers. My feet are always hot and sweaty by the time I get to the park and I HATE IT! I guess I have never really thought about wearing flipflops at the parks before but I think its a great idea! I'm all for it! Also, what are these Tevva's everybody is talking about? They sound comfty! :teeth:

Ziggie, I'm not really quoting you. I just wanted to know how you went to WDW 200+ times!! That's amazing. I wish I was you. I have only been 14 times and I thought that was a lot! I guess I was wrong! :rotfl2:

Hi sweetie, nice to meet you! :goodvibes

Well, I started going to WDW in April of 1972 (long before you were born :) ) Ever since then, we've been going whenever we find a few available days or weeks. Our family has been there for every major holiday and we just love the good times we have on our visits :goodvibes I think the only problem that has come from all this is my daughter (who is now married) has no desire to go to WDW. She has been there so often, she no longer considers it "special". When it came time for her to get married, I offered her a wonderful Disney wedding. She turned it down.

You're still young ~ I'll bet you'll eventually go to Disney more often than me princess:

What a beautiful bride! Your daughter is gorgeous!!!! :bride:

On another note, since you go so often, what time of the year tends to be the best (lowest crowds)? Is the Halloween stuff fun down there? My boyfriend is at UCF getting his Masters in Physical Therapy right now and there are a lot of PT job offerings starting at $94,000/year and WDW might be enough for me to move down there once we get married. I want to be right near Disney World, but I am scared I might lose the magic like your daughter :guilty: I doubt I would, but you never know.

Wow, talk about taking a portion of my comments out of context and jumping to conclusions! If you had read the rest of my post, you would have seen the part where I said that was just MY opinion on my particular style, and that I have no problem with any other person's particular style. I certainly never suggested that flip flops are only worn by "common, poor people". I stated that I can't wear them because of a knee problem...does that mean that I think that people with knee problems are somehow better than those without??? I was agreeing with you that flip flops are just another form of footwear that some people wear and some people don't, and I got attacked for it. Good lord, the defensiveness of people on this board is incredible.

I love flip flops! I have them by Kenneth Cole, Coconuts and my favorite, Rocket Dog. They are definitley the most comfortable shoe to walk around in.

I am not a sneaker person and I feel like my feet get sweaty in a leather sneak with socks- just give me a thong (between the toes) and let me be free! :goodvibes

WELCOME, EVERYONE, TO THE GREAT FLIP-FLOP DEBATE OF 2005!!!!
Today's debaters will answer the question: To flip flop at WDW or not to flip flop at WDW. That is the question.

Representing the extreme right, conservative, "thou salt not show thine dirty toes in public" party is Zip-a-dee-dude-da.

Representing the "trendy", "I don't care if they hurt because they are cute" party is everyone else!

:rotfl:

Zip-a-dee-dude-da: I think that you should maybe calm down. Someone just wanted to know if flip-flops were a good idea in the park and you basically blasted everyone that wears flip flops. Maybe if you lived down south (or anywhere that they AREN'T "trendy") you would realize what a stample they are. Flip flops are to Florida as Buffalos (?) are to New York. Sorry, I couldn't think of anything else! :goodvibes

:rotfl2: I agree...how can something so trivial turn into such a big deal??? I was going to wear tennis shoes when we go in June, but now to be a rebel...I think I will wear my flip flops!!!! :smooth:

I didn't read the whole thread, but just wanted to add my 2 cents. I wear them in the house (in place of slippers) year-round and outside as soon as it starts getting warm up in the NE. I have a pair of Aerosoles that I absolutely love (that I will be sporting in Disney starting tomorrow), but they are starting to fall apart, and I'm having trouble finding a replacement pair. I knew when I bought them last year that I should have gone back to get a second pair immediately.

Miranda Danda, I love your signature!

From a fellow flip flop wearer and lover, talk to you all next week!

Pam

From about May to October, I'm a flip flop junkie. :cool1: I wear them just about everywhere but to work. I usually go to WDW in January when it can be a bit chilly :cold: , so tennies aren't too hot. This year, I'm making a bonus trip in August. The thought of wearing socks and tennis shoes in 90+ degree temperatures is out of the question IMO. I just bought a few pairs of Tevas and they are the best flip flops I've ever worn :dancer: ! One of the pairs is the Kolina http://www.teva.com/Apparel_Detail.asp?dept_id=1&sku=6458&sc=all&g=women which I bought specifically for WDW because they offer more support. I'm going to take my tennies just in case, but I plan to wear the Tevas exclusively!

Seems like there are a few toe-a-phobes here!

I dont like flip flops myself. The little between the toe thing always bugs me, kinda like thong underwear but thats a different thread..."would you suggest wearing a thing or hipsters...."

I also dont really like toes too much. Not really into pedicures and never wanted to be a podiatrist (dont know HOW they do it!!). But, keep your feet in your own personal space and we'll be fine. And keep them out of my food b/c that would be gross. ALthough...toes in flip flops are probably a little better than toes that have been in sneakers all day long...yikes pirate:

But, to each his own toes.

Wear them, dont wear them. If your feet hurt from wearing them, don't come running crying to us.

I suppose I should decide on footwear soon as we leave in 3 weeks from today.

I always wear flip flops while at WDW and have never had any problems. I can't wear regular shoes because they hurt the arches of my feet.

You women are all freakin nuts!!!!!!!!!!!

Miranda calm down everyone is not attacking your love of the Flop.

Only now at the end is it apparent that the FLIP FLOP shall be the end of civilized discussion on the Dis

BTW......Miranda , you calling me conservative is the funniest thing I have ever heard...I blame conservative floridians like you for the sorry state this country is in!

(Post all political comments pro and con now)

****EDIT**** I decided to remove my post because this is not a political thread. All someone wanted to know was should they wear flip-flops, yes or no. I say "Yes, if that is what you are most comfortable in." End of my affliliation with off-topic discussions.
:bitelip:

Well, Miranda, having read your nasty post before you deleted it...I would just like to remind you that "your" great country is also "my" great country...and contrary to what some rigid thinkers may have forgotten, the country was founded on free speech, free thinking, and the art of debate. Don't tell someone to leave the country because they don't happen to like the guy you voted for. That's why our democracy holds free elections every four years...if you want a monarchy, then get out of "my" country.
