Flights via Washington

Good afternoon everyone and happy Father's Day to all the dads out there.

I've read lots about indirect flights and we have booked to go via Washington in October. We have a 3 hour stop on the way and 59 minutes coming back.

I need some reassurance please!

Should be perfect timings if everything goes to plan. I always advise 2+ hours going out, 1+ hour coming home.

9/10 you will have no problems but you can't plan for bad weather delays, plane malfunction, plane arriving late from previous flight, pilot stuck in wrong airport...... we have had all these excuses over the years they happen but rarely.

We once had a delay and we were told our pilot was stuck in another airport, had to wait for him to arrive.

we had a 6 hour delay in halifax due to the replacement pilot being stuck in toronto...
we arrived in halifax at about 5 am or so...the pilot made an unscheduled landing there as he had gone over his number of hours he is permitted to fly...(long story why, but he could have continued had he wanted to, but he was ticked off at air canada, so he landed the plane and abandoned us)...

due to noise regulations, planes cannot take off from toronto until much later in the morning...
so our replacement pilot didn't reach us until about 11 am....oh joy...
nothing like staring out at a frozen tundra in the middle of nowhere for 6 hours on a sunday morning...
and that was just to get us to toronto - where of course, we had missed our connection....

regarding the plane change in Washington - 3 hours out and 1 hour back is plenty of time.

This is our first time flying indirect and although a little nervous extremely excited too!

are you flying via dulles or baltimore-washington?

it's been years since i've been in either, but i don't recall either of them being too much of a problem (nothing like chicago or new york - both nightmares)...

so i wouldn't worry if i were you....
when you arrive in washington, you'll go through immigration, then you'll pick up your suitcases and go through customs...
then you'll deposit your suitcases back with the connecting desk and proceed to the gate of your next flight (first going through security again)..

really not too difficult.....

Surprisingly I'm not too concerned (touching wood and not meaning to tempt fate) about the way there as I'm sure there is plenty of time and worst case scenario there are other flights. On the way home with the 59 mins and take off at 22:00 I think this is the last flight to London and I keep imagining a night at the airport!

The good thing about a night at the airport is another day off work but I am fairly sure our daughters school won't be happy!

on the bright side, if you miss your return flight, after a night in the airport, maybe you could spend a few hours in DC - a really lovely city....(despite or because of being burned down by the British in the War of 1812)

I am not sure how much use this is to you but thought I would chuck it in the ring.

Washington is very nice we had a couple of days there last July, bloody warm tho.

Anyway, we flew back from there last year into Heathrow, 6 hours 9 mins. Well impressed.
