A colleague wants to take his wife to New York to celebrate their silver wedding. He has a budget of £2k for flights and 6 nights in a hotel in Sept or Oct.

He wants to fly direct, if at all possible, from Manchester.

Does anyone know of any flight sites that don't require actual dates, so he can pick the cheapest dates to travel?

Only one I know is skyscanner.net, you can search a whole month for best prices but they are not very good. I just looked at Sept, said £466 for direct but when i confirmed dates it said £642.

Thanks Wayne. He's starting to fear that he won't be able to afford it. The direct flights seem really expensive.

I really don't know what to advise him.

Just found some 16th-22nd Oct at £932.52 total for 2 seats.

We would love to return to NYC but hotel prices are more than I am willing to pay. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Time Sq similar dates to these, paid £150/nt, these 6 nights would be £1,630.70 (£272/nt) almost doubled in price since 2002.

I am sure he will do it for £2k but you really need to find a good hotel, there are some flea pits in NYC. I am not saying he will have to pay the £272 above but he will ned to choose carefully.

One thing we didn't expect was the change in temps in the evening mid Oct, nice thru the day but sooo cold in the evening. Sept would possibly be a better time to go.

Another thing is will his £2k incl spend? or just flights & hotel? once you get there you can spend a fortune, theatre tickets, meals, Empire state building, bus tour...... its never ending in a city.

I really can't see us going back again, for what it would cost us for another 3 nights in NYC we can have 2 weeks in Florida, easily.

Thanks. Where did you see those flights? I think he would go for those. His budget is for flights and hotel.

We've been to New York and so I know how expensive the hotels are. I've spotted some deals on Travelzoo but they are not yet for dates in Sept.

We went in late October and it was freezing! But still loved every minute.

They were showing on skyscanner.net.

Also some available on majortravel.co.uk at £ 933.48, maybe the same flights, I don't remember.

Travelup.co.uk have same dates at £893.42

+ more on travelsupermarket.co.uk using above dates.

Thanks. Found them!

I have emailed him.

Really appreciate the help. Will use Skyscanner myself now!

We flew cheaply to JFK last year by having really awkward flight times. It was about £330 each return (May half term). We landed at midnight on arrival and left at midnight on departure. Didn't bother us but the flight was half of that of others that day. We added a day, too, as the flight the day after we had wanted to return was cheaper (even cheaper than the extra night in the hotel).

Was definitely going to recommend TravelZoo! We used an offer on it for our New York hotel last year and got a bargain deal at the Fitzpatrick Grand Central.

Also, Kayak will let you search by month and so will United :thumbsup2

Used Kayak years and never knew that:goodvibes

I had to run and make sure I had the right website there and hadn't got it mixed up with another :lmao: It does it automatically for me on the homepage, after putting the details in, but before hitting "Find Flights" it shows to the right.

Thanks for the responses and tips everyone! Looks like a few of us are learning something new!

Well, I emailed him late last night with all the info encouraging him to grab the flights while he could, but he seems to be dithering. I'm not sure why.

You can lead a horse to water............:)
