Planning a trip for Nov 2008.
I'm looking to save money by booking all parts of the trip separately.
Does anyone have any suggestions for tried and tested cheap flights websites. ;)

Thanks for your answer. That has given me some idea where to start.

Most of the cheaper flights appear to have a stop for an hour or so. Is this generally the case or are there cheap non stop flights out there?

Another to try would be asda we booked our flights through them last year we did have to stop at Philidelphia but the cheap price was worth the extra few hours that was added to our trip. Oh hehe hopefully Wayne will see this thread and be able to help you i think hes the best guy to ask when it comes to cheap flights the amount of times he goes to the world :P

going indirect is cheaper, but saying that you can find direct flights that work out around the same price if you keep searching!!
another airline is travel city direct these are direct from manchester and cardiff and in london i think, but do compare as i have found that virgin beat them on price.

Also try Kayak.co.uk and Orbitz.com

Sometimes Direct is cheap off peak but usually indirect is cheaper. Just booked Oct half term for 3 of us indirect £723, Virgin direct £2,700. worth 2 hour stop each way to me.

Just checked the asda sight and saved myself £200. I had no idea they were in the flight buisness.
Not quite ready to book for a couple of days yet but that you all very much.

Yeah we was same when we booked them last year if we wasnt looking last minute and been able to get other flights we probably would have booked without looking to book with them. Last year we could only fly to Tampa because of availability but it was cheaper and is only an hour away we decided to stay in Tampa the night and then go to Busch Gardens before the drive back to Orlando that night.

during the two hour stop on an indirect flight, is it just a fuel stop or do you change planes?

You change planes and go thru immigration. You get on an internal flight to MCO so when you arrive you just leave the airport, no more red tape. We have done indirect about 10-12 times, we don't mind doing it especially if it saves me enough for another trip.:goodvibes

Please dont use expedia, dont even get me started!!
Where are you from, we are from edinburgh and our flights were hundreds cheaper from newcastle because school hols were diff.

It really is not a hassle, unless expedia change your flight times by 7hours, but we have done it lots of time, even with 2 changes and no hassles.

Expedia tried changing ours to a 45 min change in New York. I eventually got them to change us to another flight but it was not easy, I don't mind risking a 90 min but 45 is a no go for me. I also used them for 3 hotel bookings, all with a child, on check in all 3 were std double rooms no child bed, one in Amsterdam took until 1:30am for them to bring the extra bed.
Not booked with them for a while now. I only use them for a price guide to beat elsewhere.

What about luggage allowance on the internal flight?

If bought as a thru ticket then the allowance has always been same as transatlantic. If you bought your own internal flight seperate to your transatlantic then its whatever the airlines allowance is.
You also get more protection booking all together any delays transatlantic etc they will get you to your destination on the next available flight. We only booked seperate as we wanted to stop in NYC for 4 nights and fly from a different airport
Now I have heard this is changing and I did do a dummy booking recently and it popped up a baggage fee was payable, maybe someone else has more info on it.

Ok, you have tempted me into moaning, on our way back from usa expedia said that ba had cancelled flight from london to edinburgh and we had to wait from 3hrs to new flight was 7and half hours, when i looked on net, they had cancelled flight but had added a flight 10 minutes before our original flight!!!!!!!!!!!!
They would not change it unless we paid for a new flight!!!!!!!!!!! 300 pounds, I made at leat 30 phone calls, got at least 20 diff lots of lies, wrote 5 e-mails, no replies, eventually recorded delivery letter of complaint, honest I am so disgusted with expedia, they were a dam disgrace, I have went with last minute numerous times, no probs, in fact i have went with lots of companys lots of times and had moans but NEVER the terrible service they gave me.
Also my hubby who knew nothing about the flights(xmas surprise) took the phone call from them to say the flights were changed, then they kept saying, ah well you accpeted the changes " NO WE DIDNT"
AGGHH, somebody stop me!!!!!:scared:

Luckily I managed to sort them out with One phone call. I already knew there was a flight with good connection time but they wanted me to accept the 45 mins. They lied saying there wasn't another for about 7 hours. I told them I was on their website and it was allowing me to book the one I wanted. They gave in eventually.

When booking an indirect flight, what kind of connection time should I look for and what happens if your first flight lands late?
