Flight delay advice needed.

We flew from Manchester on 3rd August.

We were supposed to fly to New York however our flight was changed to Chicago, we were delayed and delayed when we arrived at Chicago. All in all we were delayed by about 6 hours.

When we checked in the agent who was directing us to the check in desk told us we were delayed due to maintainence and told us to pick up a card to claim compensation wheich we did.

We emailed American Airlines and they have now decided we were delayed to to Air Traffic control so we are not eligible to claim.

It all seems rather fishy! How can we find out the true reason for a delay. Is it documented anywhere and has anoyone else had this problem recently?
