Flight arrives at 6:30PM, what to do for dinner?

Then I'm proud to be an inconsiderate jerk, and yes, I'll do it again. Too bad for those who don't like the delicious smell of pizza. Mmmm...pizza.

So frequently, in the evening, I will smell people's pizza, or Chinese food, or chicken that they've ordered for their supper. I've never thought that they were thoughtless or jerks for wanting to eat. Just that they were hungry and that it smelled good, and that I wished I could have some, if none was mine.

I'm firmly in the camp with you guys...since when is other people's food required to meet *my* definition of 'appropriate smelliness'? I've never seen a sign that said "Food allowed...except pizza, onions and Stilton cheese" or been insulted that someone chose to avoid starvation by consuming something I didn't care for. But, I probably rank as 'inconsiderate jerk' too since there's nothing I love more that some heavily scented saganaki & order it every chance I get, lol ;)

Air canada sells pizza onboard! Anyone that wants it buys it to eat. What is the problem?
I knew there was a reason I liked Canada! Can we get them to give our airlines some tips?

I'd rather smell pizza than body odor, stinky feet, stale cigarette smoke, and perfume. All can be found on a plane. I suck it up because I am in a public space and when I ventured into a public space I knew I could not control others around me. Not the person who takes off their shoes, not the person passing gas, not the lady who wanted to share the smell of her perfume with the whole plane and not the people who smoked on their way into the airport. Public space is public space.

I never knew that when I ate pizza in a public place that I was an inconsiderate jerk before.

Next time people at work order pizza, I'll let them know how rude they are, because I can smell it, and can't get away. I'm pretty sure my co-workers will laugh in my face-I know that I would, if the situation was reversed.

Absolutely agree! Everyone is worried about smelly food. At least that is a yummy smell. I've brought burger and fries on before. I'm sorry if my food offends you BUT your overbearing perfume gets me, or how about the ones who for various reasons don't wear deodorant and who have excessive body odor or bad breath and are constantly encroaching on your personal space or babies with stinky diapers? (And yes I'm a mom so I know about some unavoidable issues). These bother me so we all have things that bother us and we just have to deal sometimes :)

Great, so then we can all agree that smelly food, body odor, bad breath, and poop are things people have to deal with on planes. As a member of polite society, I choose to bathe, brush my teeth, change my babies, and not carry on stinky food. Others may not feel the same. Everyone has been raised differently.

But I'm asking about PIZZA. On a PLANE. I've been told that bringing pizza on a plane means that I'm an inconsiderate jerk.

I think we should start a list of what are other foods that we should not bring on a plane because someone may object. How about coffee? I remember when I was pregnant, the smell of coffee make me feel nauseated. Oh, wait, airlines usually supply coffee. Are those that drink coffee being inconsiderate jerks, because the smell may make a pregnant woman feel nauseated? So the flight attendants are the jerks?

How about a cinnamon roll? Is bringing one of those onto a plane inconsiderate? The smell may cause someone to break their diet. Surely causing someone to eat something that they shouldn't, just because of the smell, is inconsiderate.

How about we get this list of foods that are inconsiderate to bring on a plane, just because of the smell? No. 1, apparently is pizza. It may make someone's 28-year old baby ill.

What is your home airport like?

For us, almost all the food at MSP (Minneapolis-St Paul) is beyond the security gate. We ALWAYS arrive an hour or more before boarding even begins, and we ALWAYS go straight through the security line because you never know how long that will take, so we almost always have time for a meal before boarding the plane. Sometimes its Subway or McDs, sometimes we eat at Chilis - there is a ton of food at the MSP.

At MCO (Orlando) there is very little food beyond the security gate, so we don't go through security until we have to - the problem with MCO is that security lines can take an hour and fluctuate quickly, particularly if you are there when cruise buses arrive. So we almost never eat at MCO because we don't want to be on the wrong side of security flying out - unless we end up with a ton of time - and when we fly in, well, we just really want to get to our destination.

Funny, compared to our home airport, MCO is a culinary delight! We have a tiny Starbucks plus a pizza/burger/hot dog counter, which is almost always out of whatever our first choice is! Oh, but they make a kickin' $10 egg sandwich!

In response to the OP, the last time we flew to MCO, we did not have time to eat during our short layover and we landed around 8 pm so we needed to eat before getting on ME. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of eating at the Food Court at MCO.

:thumbsup2

And thanks to this thread, I am planning on getting pizza on Thursday night, and bringing the cold leftovers with Friday AM for my flight :) YUM!!!

I find it inconsiderate because planes are very tight closed in spaces. Those around you can't escape the smell and in the case of a pizza box, you're very likely encroaching on the space of the person next to you. Maybe I'm more sensitive to this because two of our four have severe motion sickness. My DS28 refuses all food and snacks on the plane even with his meds. He tries to fall asleep as soon as possible. The strong smell of something like pizza (his favorite food by the way) adds to his discomfort.

Honestly, if you are buying food in the airport, why not just eat it before boarding? Our flight to Hawaii left LAX at 6:00pm. We had a rental car to return and wanted to allow for LA traffic. Everything went smoothly so we were checked in by 4 with 2 hours to wait. We got pizza and ate before boarding. We took nothing on the plane and got a snack after landing on Oahu.

Sorry about your adult son's food aversion while in motion, but that is so funny to me that you posted twice about the pizza on a flight to Hawaii. I just flew home from Honolulu, Hawaii (Oahu) direct to Dulles Airport and the AIRLINE served (for a fee) warmed up cheeseburgers, and warmed up meat and cheese hoagie type sandwiches, all with sides of lettuce, tomato and ONIONS. I would have welcomed pizza over the smell of onions from both of those delicacies. :rotfl: It was HOURS before the smell of onions cleared the air. :crazy2: They also served the same on the way TO Hawaii.

We took subway sandwiches purchased at the airport (turkey and cheese with lettuce, tomato and mayo) onto the plane and not only did it not smell at all, it was delicious :)

OP in your shoes I would take food onto the plane, or eat my early supper while waiting for the plane in the lobby packed into little chairs with all the same people I will be on the plane with, and arrive in Orlando ready for a small second supper at the resort. :upsidedow

Wow, I've never been on a plane where someone has been eating a hot stinky meal! Does every meal need to be hot? Just grab a sandwich! Planes are so tight - try not to encroach on people, physically, with noises (use headphones), or with smells (warm garlic isn't pleasant in close quarters). It's just polite.

Whenever I fly I always think about the food I'm bringing on board. I would never bring anything with a strong odor, as I think that is the courteous thing to do. Just like I would never spray perfume on, or spray febreeze all around.

It is not as if there are not a million choices of food to bring on board that don't have a strong smell.

So, is a cinnamon roll out? How about coffee? You could be annoying the person next to you with those smells too. What about peeling an orange?

These all have smells that waft around. Does eating an orange mean that I'm an inconsiderate jerk?

I wouldn't peel an orange on the aircraft, and that is when most of the smell from the arises. A cinnamon roll only gives of a strong smell when it is warm. By the time you get on an airplane it won't be warm anymore. I don't drink coffee when I fly, so that wouldn't be an issue, even though the cover on those that you buy keeps most of the smell locked in.

I'm answering you as if you are posting questions that you are actually concerned about, instead of just trolling, or looking to argue. Notice I never said I would be outraged by anyone eating whatever on an aircraft. Just that I take the odor a food item gives off into consideration when I'm packing food to take on board.

I have taken pizza on a plane before....

no, not a huge box of pizza that juts into others seats as someone mentioned....just 1 slice!

no, not with onions :rotfl2: (just plain!)

no, it never occurred to me that pizza would be an offensive smell on an airplane. Sandwiches with vinegar (:faint:), onions, other strong smells I would find to be offensive...but pizza? I've actualy chosen it over other things (chinese food, hoagie type sandwiches) because I figured it would bother people less! What if I hated the smell of coffee...and the whole plane was drinking it? Or liquor, and the guy next to me had a really bad day and was drinking himself into oblivion? :rotfl:

there are many things I find offensive on a plane (the child behind me on a flight a year or two ago who was screaming and kicking my seat, and the mom who was doing nothing about it!).

I don't know about others airports except for the ones I have flown out of but I can assure you that when flying out of Chicago most of the items mentioned can be bought after the security check point and brought on the plane.

There is no such thing as privacy in a public space.

Also while some people like to complain endlessly on the DIsboards about what everybody else should be doing, according to them, you will rarely hear a peep about this stuff in the real world. The exception being line cutting :)
