Flight arrives at 6:30PM, what to do for dinner?

Well, I have a belly that gets angry when it's hungry, and I have one kid with my metabolism, LOL. The other one is like her father, can forget to eat, or doesn't get irrational when hungry. ;)

The problem, I suppose, in addition to ensuring I am adequately fed is all information I didn't bother to bog down the thread with. The kids will be in school all day, and, instead of them coming home on the bus, we will pick them up at school, scoop them off to the airport and surprise them with a trip to Disney! So, they can't very well be prepared with a big lunch. Of course I'll pack snacks, of course we can eat here, there or everywhere. I was just trying to sort out the logistics of it, and thankfully many people posted some great info that I didn't know.

I didn't know food could not be consumed on any Disney bus.
I didn't know the buses run continuously.
I didn't know what other people did in the same boat.

So, thank you everyone for your awesome info! It really helped me plan.

All those details do nothing to change my suggestion. Bring snacks to hold you over and eat at your resort when you get there. I have a child that is always eating. My pursue is never without a few snacks. And did you honestly think eating pizza on a moving bus was a viable solution?

She didn't know, she asked, now she knows. No biggie. We will be in the same boat on our upcoming trip. We have to bring lunch on the plane and since it's such a long flight DS will be starved when we get there. Even if I pack a ton of food we'll probably have to eat at the airport before we get on DME to avoid a meltdown. If anyone has suggestions of decent airport food at MCO please share!

There any many, many restaurants at MCO: http://www.orlandoairports.net/concessions/shops.htm

You can eat at your home airport while you're waiting for your flight - you'll probably have an hour or two to kill anyway.

Isn't the Disboards all about asking questions and gathering information? :confused3 Not sure why you feel so compelled to turn this into some sort of "thing". She asked a question, and now she knows the answer. Relax.

When we take similarly timed flights to wherever (WDW is a whole other production when flying from Seattle!) we like to either eat at the airport after going through security or get sandwiches, chips, etc and take them on the plane. That helps break up the flight too, and we always have people telling us they wish they'd thought of that. Then when we get to our destination we might share a meal or just get some dessert to kick off the vacation. Have fun!

Oh and going to WDW we always take a red eye. We arrive around 530 am. I always feel in a huge rush to get on the absolute quickest ME bus. But the past two times I've put aside my rush and it's been great. We stop at Starbucks, change our son from jammies to shorts, and just relax. Last summer we actually had a bus to French Quarter all to ourselves! We checked in, had breakfast at the food court and were still at Epcot for rope drop. So, my advice is relax and enjoy!

What is your home airport like?

For us, almost all the food at MSP (Minneapolis-St Paul) is beyond the security gate. We ALWAYS arrive an hour or more before boarding even begins, and we ALWAYS go straight through the security line because you never know how long that will take, so we almost always have time for a meal before boarding the plane. Sometimes its Subway or McDs, sometimes we eat at Chilis - there is a ton of food at the MSP.

At MCO (Orlando) there is very little food beyond the security gate, so we don't go through security until we have to - the problem with MCO is that security lines can take an hour and fluctuate quickly, particularly if you are there when cruise buses arrive. So we almost never eat at MCO because we don't want to be on the wrong side of security flying out - unless we end up with a ton of time - and when we fly in, well, we just really want to get to our destination.

I suspect once your kids know they are going to DISNEY, you won't be able to get them to stop in the Orlando airport for food, so you are best off eating a light meal before you get on the plane.

If you haven't flown with kids, eating on the plane is sort of a disaster with them. There isn't enough room. You can't really get to your stuff (if you brought on food rather than eating the horrible and expensive meals airplanes have now). The plane is a fine place for fruit snacks and other things that come in convenient packaging.

Wise advise! I think we will just chill out and see where we are with our hunger to see if we should eat at MCO or our resort.

Our home airport is small. Like small small. No sit down restaurants, only a cooler with soggy sandwiches. I will just pack lunch for us to eat on the plane. Luckily we are flying direct, so at least no layovers to fuss about.

Thanks everyone!

You cannot eat on the DME bus.

Why not just bring sandwiches or something to eat on the plane?

Well you can eat on the bus. It's just against the rules, but we do it all the time. What you can't do is bring sandwiches through security. You can buy food and bring it on the plane. That would be the most efficent for time. But might I suggest something different than a pizza if you are going to eat on the bus.

Of course you can bring sandwiches through security. Their not liquid or gel. If you want to keep condiments separate you would have to put the packs of mayo or whatever in your 311 bag. But I would probably just go with a lunchable even though they aren't great for you and call it done rather than mess with condiments.

I vote for eating on the plane. Then when you land you will be energized and have one fewer thing to worry about.

In fact, that is one of the big lessons that we learned from our last trip that we will change for this trip. We landed at about 7pm at Sanford and had to drive about 10-15 minutes out of our way for Burger King for dinner. Not a good start to the trip.

You sure can bring food through security. It is not problem as long as you still follow the liquids rule.

As for eating on the bus, I'm not sure why you don't feel your family has to follow that rule. Food on the buses equals mess on the buses which equals bugs on the buses.

Don't forget drivers having to take buses out of service to clean the mess which means someone else's family is waiting longer at mco because there are now fewer buses available.

Thank goodness PP's are saying there's no food on the DME bus. I do not like it when people stink up confined spaces with food, especially fried things.

Our flight arrives at MCO at 6:30pm also but unlike you it's a cross-country flight so we'll be starting early and picking up something cold and non-stinky (ie. a sandwich or cold salad) for on the plane. So we'll be snacking and planning to eat at the resort when we arrive...probably 8pm-ish.

Like PP's said - have a late lunch, bring snacks and I'd suggest eating at the resort for dinner. If that's too late for you, grab something to go at MCO. I am sure they list on their website what restaurants are at their airport.

I stand corrected.

I hate hate hate when someone brings smelly food onto a plane, bus, whatever. Just flew the first hour of our trip home from Hawaii with a family and their large smelly pizza lunch.

For a 6:30 arrival, I would kick off the vacation by packing everyone's backpack with their rarely eaten but dearly loved snack treats- pistachios, chez its, Pringles, gummys. And then we would eat a Disney dinner at the resort upon arrival. 7:30 is our regular dinner time so we wouldn't have an issue.

My kids are always starving when they get out of school. No way would they make it even to the airport (and definitely not the 2+ hrs of wait time) without begging for a snack of some kind. I would stop at a fast food place before picking them up from school, get kids meals, and save the toys. Feed them in my car on the way to the airport and definitely throw away the trash when we get there. Then let them play with the toys while they wait for the flight or on the plane.

Then when we got to the hotel that night, I would get them a "real" meal.

Personally, I'd avoid anything to crumbly on a plan (pringles or cheese its) because it inevitably crumbles down someones shirt where it itches and being a plane, its difficult to do anything about. (Voice of experience). We like chewy granola bars, fruit snacks (or even better fruit leather), cubes or small slices of cheese, dried fruit that has some size to it (raisins get dropped - my daughter is a fan of dried mangos), pretzels. Avoid nuts (you'll inevitably end up seated near someone who freaks out because their kid is allergic) and anything that your kids are likely - even unlikely - to make a mess of at home, the mess will be worse on the airplane (no yogurt sticks for my kids at that age, someone WOULD squeeze too hard on the plan).

In interest of fellow passengers, nothing too smelly (I agree that someone bringing pizza onto the plane is either a really bad case of "I didn't think" or "I'm an inconsiderate jerk.").

You'll need to buy beverages on the other side of security or make due with whatever is served on the plane. I would recommend water on the other side of security - if your kids won't drink plain water, flavored water - again, sticky is bad if spilled, and you don't want caffeinated kids arriving at Disney coming into their bedtimes.
