Flies in my HOUSE!

Thanks for the vanilla tip, I just used it--there was a fly buzzing around the room I'm in for the past half hour and I brought out the bottle of vanilla, poured a little in the lid, put a few drops on a piece of paper, the room smells of vanilla now and fingers crossed the fly is gone....

The White House is bugged!
No, not like that. But actual flies are swarming the place, confounding housekeepers, irritating aides, even trying to feast on the president. During an East Room interview with John Harwood for CNBC and The New York Times on Tuesday, a giant fly orbited Mr. Obama’s head.

Maybe we should send some tree air fresheners to President Obama. :rotfl:

Okay, how about mosquitos? We're okay with flies here (fruit and regular) this year but some how mosquitos are getting in and we can't figure out where and how. We're killing 1 -3 a day! We've put out natural traps of baking soda and yeast and we only trapped 2 over a week. Anyone else have any ideas? My parents arrive tomorrow for a week long stay and I don't want them getting bitten like we have (luckily they don't seem to like my son and I but they do my husband)

For the flies, check the tracks of all your windows. They tend to lay eggs in there too. Make sure large trash cans are outdoors too.

you can also try a ziplock bag of water with a penny in it and hang it out side your door to try to keep them out.

This works great!! Flies have funny eyes and it creeps them out when they see the bags of water so they're scared of them.

I told my family about what I read we could do for our ants and mentioned the cinnamon. Well, DS20 got up and found ants in the kitchen again and a huge box of cinnamon....it's now a huge box of cinnamon that doesn't have much in it.:lmao: I still have ants and not much cinnamon. :confused3

I have an unconvential way of getting rid of flies. They seem to congregate on window sills, so with hose in hand, I turn on the vacuum cleaner and suck those little puppies right up. They can't outrun the suction so no chasing with a swatter necessary. I suck up close to a dozen a day in my house. Gross, but it does it the trick.

Seriously DO NOT LAUGH this remedy will sound a little Momma Odieish :wizard: but this has worked.:thumbsup2 Take a Ziploc freezer bag, fill it about half way w/ water then place at least a 10 - 12 pennies in it, seal it up & hang it above your entry doors (on the outside). Saw the difference in about a day. NO MORE FLIES! GUARANTUEED! seriously. Maybe it was mental but the flies in & around MIL house have vanished.:hippie:

We had them horribly in June. Flies and Fruit Flies. The fly paper worked great!! It took 3 stickies in our kitchen to get rid of them.
Then I put the wine glass out with a little Chardonnay in it and covered it with saran wrap. Poked holes in the top and that caught the last of the fruit flies. They can get into the glass, but cant get out because of the plastic wrap. Just left it on the counter for a few days.

Our flies were coming thru the doggy door.

Well, I am at my witts end with these things. My DD8 had a play date today but I took them to the park instead of here cause I didn't want her to go home and tell her mom about the flies here. Saturday my DD15 is having 3 girls spend the night. I am so embarassed, hoping they are gone by then for her sake and for mine, I am going crazy here! We have collected many on the fly strips, but more are buzzing around. I went tonight and bought 6 Vanilla car air fresheners. Our house smells pretty good! :thumbsup2 Hope they take the hint and leave!

I am going to try the bag and pennies, what do I have to lose? It sounds weird but I will try anything!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the advise!

Ugh, I'm happy & not to see others having similar issues. We have a bunch in the front & back yards & they come in every time we open a door. With 2 dogs & 2 kids running in & out, it's driving me nuts. They are all around a bush out front but I can't see or smell anything. I know rabbits live under there so I'm afraid of what they are attracted to.

I will have to try the penny in a bag trick. If nothing else, it will amuse my kids! Luckily, one of the dogs is a good fly hunter but it's gross.

we have killed atleast 30 flies over the course of 2 days in our house....we never have flies...this is driving me insane. We poured bleach down the drains in our guest bathroom and hope that will help but GEESH!

This thread is making me feel so much better! I thought there was a dead animal under our house or something since we've had so many flies this summer...seems like there are at least 4 or 5 in our house each day. We just moved to this house last winter, but we're only a mile from our old apartment, and I don't ever remember having flies this badly there. Maybe it's just a bad year for flies, or maybe there really is a place inside (or under) our house where they're laying eggs.

I've been lazy about putting up any kind of flypaper or fly trap, so I guess I'll try something like that soon. The vanilla and ziploc bag ideas sound good, too. These flies are driving me nuts!

We too have tons of flies. They attack too! Yesterday they were flying right into my eyelashes! They constantly will buzz around us and bounce off of us! EWWW--I'm going to try the vanilla and water in ziplock bags first thing tomorrow!

We always take our shoes off in the garage outside the house door and the flies seemed to really congregate there. We moved the shoes all inside and it has cut down on the number of flies, but there are still too many!

Surpisingly, this year has not been a bad fly year for you. But in past years, we've had them horribly. The only thing that has worked consistently for us has been the fly paper. I always felt so dirty with the flies in here but we keep our house clean so I guess it's just something that happens.

Well the sleepoer is tonight and the flies are still here. :headache: I have 6 of the tree air fresheners all over (house smells nice.) I am not convinced they don't work though, the flies seem to be acting crazy. But like my DH said, where are they going to go? I said they got in, they need to GET OUT! We have not found where they came in other then jsut the doors opening and closing but there are so many! The fly papers are collecing many but there are still pleanty. I warned DD15 that is she has the sleepover to warn the girls so they don't go telling people our house was gross or something (it's clean, just buggy!) But she said she told them and they all said they are having the same issues at their houses. So, it must be a bad year for them.
They truly are making me crazy. I told DH I really hope that flies are not how I finally lose my mind. :rotfl:

Good luck everyone, I will appreciate winter this year! :rotfl2:

Didn't read all the replies and sorry if it was mentioned but what about a fly tape? We use it around this time when the flies are bad and it really helps. Good luck.

A couple of years ago we had a terrible problem with these little tiny flies.
No matter what I did they came back. It was a major problem.
Come to find out, they were coming from the new potting soil that i bought to replant my indoor plants..Potting soil gone, flies disappeared to never return.
So if you get little tiny flies that seem to come from nowhere and you have new potting soil. Just throw it out.
Bonnie

The ziplock bag of water and pennies does work!!!!!! I live close to the beach and a lot of restaurants use this method. Flies have been VERY bad here too. I had one hanging in my kitchen window and it worked!
