Flies in my HOUSE!

we too had a fly infestation earlier this summer!!!!

It was like an Alfred Hitchcock movie...kill 10 flies on the window, turn around, hear a buzzing sound and pull the curtain back to reveal...10 more are there. :scared1:

We vacuumed like crazy (including the flies), got fly strips that stick to the windows...gross, but worked. We also searched the house for a dead body, :rotfl:but all we came up w/ was a mini peanut butter cup under a couch in the basement. There were tons of flies down there too.

You have to find where they are laying eggs and kill them or they will make more flies.

YUK It was awful! Hope you get some relief.

On the last day of school in June, my ds came running out side saying he couldn't go in the house because there were a lot of flies in the house. When I walked in, it was like the scene in Amityville Horror. My windows in the kitchen and Living room were full of flies, I killed so many of them on the window that I had to scrap the bug guts off, I couldn't just spray and wipe. I had 100's of them. I ended up spraying them with bug spray but then bought the bug zapper.. so I use that now. I still have them, I kill 1 there are 4 more lurking. I used the ziplock bags with water last year outside, think I'm going to hang some in my windows. I hate flies....

the flies seem to be gone now...We poured bleach down the drains and we think it worked....I LOVE you guys so much.

My DD has flies at her house too the fly paper has not caught a fly in a month but my 4 1/2 yr old GS can grab flys out of mid air sometimes 2 at a time.....he even has caught them in a flip top box 2 at a time.

I am jealous, we are still having touble. We have air fresheners, bags of water and pennies and have vaccumed up tons. I think, like the PP said, we need to start looking for a dead body! :lmao:

Just wondering...how does this work? Why does it keep them away?:confused3

The flies have odd eyes and when they see the water in the bag, they see many of themselves in very big form and it scares them. It works too!

Okay, how about mosquitos? We're okay with flies here (fruit and regular) this year but some how mosquitos are getting in and we can't figure out where and how. We're killing 1 -3 a day! We've put out natural traps of baking soda and yeast and we only trapped 2 over a week. Anyone else have any ideas? My parents arrive tomorrow for a week long stay and I don't want them getting bitten like we have (luckily they don't seem to like my son and I but they do my husband)

Do you have any standing water in the yard? Has it rained more than usual?

This works great!! Flies have funny eyes and it creeps them out when they see the bags of water so they're scared of them.

I told my family about what I read we could do for our ants and mentioned the cinnamon. Well, DS20 got up and found ants in the kitchen again and a huge box of cinnamon....it's now a huge box of cinnamon that doesn't have much in it.:lmao: I still have ants and not much cinnamon. :confused3

For the ants, try chili powder. It stains, just so you know. It keeps them from coming in because it burns and they don't like it.

As for flies, if you have that many and have tried a few things something is attracting them. Kill every one you see, it might take a few days of sitting and watching them and squishing but if you don't get rid of them they will continue to mate.

I would check the yard for a dead bird or something.

I've been buying the bulk of our food from the farmers market this year and I've been overrun by fruit flies twice now.

I make beer bombs. I take a tall glass, fill it half a beer, cover it with saran and poke a few holes in it with a fork. They love the beer, drink it, fly up to get out, smack their heads on the saran they can't even see now and die happily in a sea of Budweiser. Its a win win situation :)

To whomever recommended the cinnamon for ants, I just sprinkled some on the ones that like to live in my bathroom. You'd think I'd electrocuted them, they scattered quick! Thanks for the idea!

I know it sounds weird, but it DOES work... fill a ziploc baggie with water and hang it in the doorway. I don't know exactly how it works, but it DOES work and keeps the flies from coming in! At least one fly was sneaking in EVERY time we opened the door to let the dogs in or out. Put up the baggie of water and haven't had any since. Well, we did have one or two sneak in the front door when we were trying to get a new couch through the door, but we didn't have the baggie of water up on the front doorway, just the back. Guess we need to put one up in the front too.

Oh we've had the WORST fly problem in our area too!

What worked for us? The exterminator sprayed the wrong house :rotfl2:

Seriously, we live on a college campus in family housing and apparently another tenant asked the exterminator to spray his house. The exterminator got the house number confused and sprayed our house by mistake, but he sprayed the window seals, etc.

So if any of y'all are do-it-yourself exterminators, you might try spraying the window seals...

Didn 't read through the entire post, but I wanted to add that I have had flies in my attic, and I taped a dryer sheet next to the windows up there, and it worked great. I think it has to be a scented one.

I wanted to update, but wanted to wait to be sure, and now I am. The flies are gone! :cool1::banana::cool1::banana:
I have the bags with water and pennies and the vanilla air fresheners hanging everwhere, so not sure what worked, but they are gone. We never did find "the source" if you will, but they are gone and I am feeling so mcuh less stress.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and for assuring me that it wsan't just us. I won't be taking these things down till the first freeze and next spring I will be hanging them up once again, before we have a problem.

Again, thank you all! :worship:

There have been a ton of flies around a section of my flower garden this summer...a fact that I have linked to mint. I planted fresh mint in my perennial garden this year, and now the mint is super high with purplish flowers on them. The flies have been buzzing around them, eating them, sniffing them, and basically loving them for weeks...talk about a total gross-out! I have been shooing them away when I water the flowers, but they do not stay gone for long. I really think it is the mint since my other flowers have no fly infestation...and there are no bad smells in my garden either ( as in dead animal or whatever). I am going to try the pennies in water filled baggies if I can figure out how to hang them among the flowers....I know mint does not work. To me there is nothing more disgusting than a fly. I mean anything that has no problems with flying onto dog poop and doing whatever it is they do on it cannot be good, IMO. :confused3
