flea prevention...where do you get yours?

I have a dog with really short hair so I can't use the traditional liquids because it doesn't want to absorb. So I go to www.earthanimal.com and buy the powder that goes on their food. She can't get enough of it!

Just incase you choose to go back to the traditional liquid what I do with my short haired dog who's hair repells liquid is to take a little brow shaver and shave a small spot on the back of her neck to put the liquid on and that works great.

I have used both Frontline and Advantage for biggest dog on my cats for 7-8 years now with no problems. It's all in the dosage. They are the only 2 I'm sure about. Would never use anything else this way. Can't help it is some kinda stupid people use hertz or something cheap like that wrong because "they heard you can use the same stuff and save money". It's unfortunate. I have 18 cats-- never any problem with advantage or frontline although I kind of prefer Advantage.
I'm sure there are some vets that object to his as much of their income comes from flea treatments and immunizations, both of which people are getting more savvy on in harder times.

Ok... My super budget solution is this!
I go to tractor supply where I can get frontline Plus for aprox 60 dollars for the big dog size doses (4 ml each dose) a feline size dose is 0.5 ml. One dose becomes 8 With 4 cats, it is by far the best way for me to do it. I just use a small syringe with no needle on it to draw up 0.5 ml and squirt it on

Thanks for the tip...with 9 in the house this would be a great way to save some money!

Vets don't reccomend it because it's not being used as directed. You might have gotten lucky but someone else might not be so lucky when doing this. I think it's irresponsible to offer advice that goes against the manufacturers directions. There is a certain amount of medication in the tube, when you draw up several dosages from one tube the amount of actual medication you are getting per dose is going to vary. One cat may be getting 2-3 times as much of the medication in the same amount as another. There is a set amount of medication in each tube when given all at once, not in smaller amounts. If someone tries what you have suggested and their cat becomes ill are you going to cover the vet bill? It does happen, I have seen many cats sick from advantage and frontline for dogs being applied to them this way. You say you have no problems, but I'm saying I have seen problems and don't chance it. Do not gamble with your cat's health to save a dollar, it's not worth it.

BTW reputable vets are not making a living off of selling flea products. There's hardly any mark up on flea and tick meds at your vet. No one with any sense goes to vet school to get rich, and if they do they get a quick reality check once they graduate. The ones that are would be the vets that are selling their questionable stock to internet companies like petmeds.

Thanks - I really don't know what to believe at this point. Our vet, who is right from China, was saying people who use the mailorder sometime get the Frontline, etc, from China and it doesn't work. A person in PetSmart also made a comment about buying online/over the phone when I was looking for a flea comb. It might be one of those things that isn't really true, but I have it stuck in my head, and I'll be buying from my vet from now on. .

My vet is a man in his 80's who works out of his office behind his house. He has been telling me for years about how he has to call the suppliers on every order to make sure his meds are not coming from China. My dog got a shot of antibiotic where she squeeled and cried and then limped. He looked at the bottle and swore apologizing that it was made in China. He said the US made stuff does not hurt the dog at all and tossed the bottle in the garbage right there. He said he does not know what they are doing with those meds from there but they are not the same as they make them here in the US but they cost the suppliers less so there is more markup. So there is some truth to meds made in China being no good. He has never said anything about worrying about Frontline made from China. He encourages me to get it wherever I can get it the cheapest if his is more expensive. He only sells the regular frontline anyway and I prefer the frontline plus. He is big on charging fare prices for his vet services but he only does the basics since he has none of the expensive equipment. He is at least half to 3/4 of the price of the other vets around us with the fancy offices and equipment they need to pay for.
